Havoc Demon Hunter: The Short Version
Havoc advice here follows Icy Veins’ pages from 30 August (stats from 10 August) and the 6 October hotfix notes. Read on 12 October 2026, with patch 12.1 and Season 2 current; patch 12.1.5 is due on 13 October.
Havoc is the melee Demon Hunter: a fast build-and-spend Fury loop mixed with short, high-intensity burst cooldowns, and one of the best mobility kits in the game. It brings the Chaos Brand debuff to the group. In Season 2 Icy Veins recommends Fel-Scarred for nearly everything.

Where Havoc Ranks Right Now
Havoc is an average damage dealer in dungeons and a little above average in raid.

In PvP, Icy Veins’ 4 September arena list puts Havoc in tier A+, one step below the S tier of Arms Warrior, Assassination Rogue, Affliction Warlock and Fire Mage. Icy Veins describes it as a high-burst spec with desirable damage profiles. Compare it with other specs in our Midnight best DPS guide.
What Changed for Havoc in Patch 12.1
The 12.1 notes changed Havoc’s talent tree and its Fury economy. Blizzard’s aim was a small overall Fury increase, spread more evenly and less dependent on Immolation Aura’s talent effects.
- New talent: Never Say Die, +3% damage above 50% health and +5% Leech below 50%.
- Removed: Dash of Chaos. Trail of Ruin now deals its full damage at once instead of over 4 seconds.
- Fury: Blind Fury gives 10 Fury per second per point (was 15), Burning Hatred makes Immolation Aura give 30 extra Fury (was 40), and Demon Blades gives 10 to 16 Fury per hit (was 8 to 15).
- Choice node: Inner Demon now shares a node with Chaos Theory.
- Cooldown tuning: Inertia gives 12% for 6 seconds (was 18% for 5 seconds), Immolation Aura damage −8%, Essence Break initial damage +49%, The Hunt +12%, and Blade Dance, Death Sweep, Chaos Strike and Annihilation +6%.
- Serrated Glaive is now a 12-second buff on you instead of on targets.
These changes cut the value of some formerly key talents and make Aldrachi Reaver more competitive in single target. Even so, Icy Veins found Fel-Scarred too flexible in The Venomous Abyss for Reaver to keep up, since it can switch between burst, single target and cleave without much loss. The 6 October hotfixes did not change Havoc’s PvE damage.

Early Season 2 performance showed Wounded Quarry’s funnel only helps on specific fights, and it cannot swap between burst, single target and cleave as easily as Fel-Scarred.
Havoc Rotation
Havoc builds Fury with Demon Blades and Felblade, and spends it on Blade Dance and Chaos Strike. Eye Beam, Essence Break and Vengeful Retreat create the burst windows. This is Icy Veins’ Fel-Scarred single-target priority for patch 12.1 (30 August):
- Vengeful Retreat, to trigger Exergy (use it on cooldown).
- Metamorphosis, if Eye Beam and Death Sweep are both on cooldown.
- The Hunt.
- Immolation Aura at 2 charges.
- Death Sweep during Essence Break or with Demonsurge active.
- Annihilation with Demonsurge active.
- Eye Beam (Abyssal Gaze after Metamorphosis).
- Essence Break.
- Death Sweep or Blade Dance.
- Consuming Fire with Demonsurge active.
- Annihilation or Chaos Strike.
- Immolation Aura or Consuming Fire.
- Felblade.
- Fel Rush when nothing else is available.
Fel-Scarred notes
- Every time you enter Demonic, cast two Death Sweeps through Eternal Hunt and one Annihilation to consume Demonsurge. After a Metamorphosis cast you also consume the effect from Abyssal Gaze and Consuming Fire.
- Using Abyssal Gaze to enter Demonic from Metamorphosis creates new Demonsurge procs, so you can refresh for a new set.
- Essence Break windows are longer with the tier set, so do not cut into the debuff with Eye Beam. If the two clash, hold Eye Beam until you are in Metamorphosis.
- Empower Abyssal Gaze rather than Eye Beam when you can: every two minutes, when Metamorphosis is ready, cast The Hunt after the transformation.
The Apex Talent and the tier set
Eternal Hunt makes The Hunt empower your next Eye Beam (+100% damage and more range), reduces The Hunt’s cooldown by 15 seconds per point on points 2 and 3, increases Blade Dance damage by 20%, and lets a fully channeled Eye Beam reset Blade Dance’s cooldown. Never start an Eye Beam you cannot finish, because losing the follow-up is a big loss.
The Season 2 tier set (Abyssal Doomhound’s Pursuit) gives 12% more damage to Blade Dance, Chaos Strike and Essence Break at 2 pieces. At 4 pieces Essence Break benefits from Cycle of Hatred, deals 35% more initial damage and lasts 2 seconds longer. Eye Beam and Essence Break reduce each other’s cooldown: by 2.5 seconds each before you reach 4 stacks, and by a flat 10 seconds each after. Do not hold Essence Break too long to force an overlap with Eye Beam.
Talents and Omnium Folio
Icy Veins offers three Fel-Scarred import codes: raid and cleave, AoE and Mythic+, and Delves. The raid cleave build is the default for The Venomous Abyss, with one flexible point in the center of the tree. Take a point in Blind Fury for fights with adds. On fights where the boss spends a lot of time alone, such as Vashnik, take Isolated Prey instead for single-target damage. Aldrachi Reaver has its own single-target, Mythic+ (high key) and Delves builds.
For the Omnium Folio (patch 12.0.7), Icy Veins uses Unleashed Fire, Self-Mending, Lingering and Critical Power in nodes one to four, with Overload in the fifth.

Havoc Stat Priority
Agility, then Critical Strike, Mastery, Haste and Versatility. After the Midnight stat squish, item level drives most gearing decisions.
- Critical Strike is the focus: Know Your Enemy converts Critical Strike chance into extra crit damage, and talents such as Critical Chaos and Ragefire scale with it.
- Mastery raises all Chaos damage and your base movement speed, and it is nearly as valuable. Stack these two as high as possible.
- Haste is better than before because Demon Blades now gives more Fury, but it stays a little behind.
- Versatility is last, and in Season 2 it is best kept as low as possible: it cannot go below zero, so Venomcursed items and Potion of Recklessness take stats from it for free.

Havoc Gear: Tier Set, Best Items and Trinkets
Getting the 4-piece set is the first priority, because it also opens Catalyst Unbound for Season 2. The Catalyst keeps an item’s stats and special effects, so convert whichever pieces are best. The best items to convert are: Gaze of the Coiled Watcher (Ula’tek), Frothing Venom Spaulders (Vashnik), Vest of Reverent Adoration (King’s Rest), Abyssal Doomhound’s Studded Gauntlets (Entombed Sentinels) and Coiled Hex Legguards (Coiled Altar).
Icy Veins’ best-in-slot list aims for Critical Strike and Mastery. The neck from Ula’tek was changed just before Season 2, and the list was rechecked afterwards.

Trinkets
Havoc wants one on-use trinket that lines up with Metamorphosis and one strong passive trinket. S tier: Zul’jin’s Guillotine Technique, Font of Venomous Rage and Voracious Heart of Ula’tek. A tier: Void Execution Mandate, Keeper’s Seething Core, Vile Vial of Volatile Venom, Vashnik’s Sanguine Rancor and Sapling of the Dawnroot. Both stat-proc and damage trinkets work, because of Know Your Enemy.

Draught of Rampant Abandon is stronger on paper, but its void zones pacify you, and the gain is gone after one or two lost global cooldowns.
Havoc in Arena
Havoc is tier A+ on Icy Veins’ PvP list (4 September). In 2v2 the plan is damage: Havoc’s burst and sustained damage make healers fall behind, and a well-timed stun on a low target tends to force a defensive cooldown or trinket. Icy Veins’ recommended 2v2 partners are Restoration Druid, Preservation Evoker, Discipline Priest and Mistweaver Monk. On 6 October Havoc’s PvP talent Illidan’s Grasp got +50% damage. Where does Havoc stand in Season 2?
Average in Mythic+ (16th of 27 specs by wow.gg average damage, A at Icy Veins) and slightly above average in Heroic raid (13th on wow.gg).
Fel-Scarred or Aldrachi Reaver?
Fel-Scarred for raid, Mythic+ and Delves. Reaver only if you need the funnel in high keys or a pure single-target build.
Why must I take Essence Break?
Both tier set bonuses are built on it. At 4 pieces it also benefits from Cycle of Hatred and lasts longer.
Should I hold Essence Break to line it up with Eye Beam?
Not for long. Each one shortens the other’s cooldown, so holding Essence Break to force an overlap usually costs more than it gains.
Should I keep Versatility high?
No. Keeping Versatility low is better in Season 2 because Venomcursed items and Potion of Recklessness reduce it, and it cannot go below zero.
Which healers does Icy Veins pair with Havoc in 2v2?
Restoration Druid, Preservation Evoker, Discipline Priest and Mistweaver Monk, from its August arena page. The September healer list rates Mistweaver lowest, so pick one of the first three.
