Guide: Season 1 Mythic+ Dungeons in The War Within

Table of contents

Overhaul of the Mythic+ System

Changes to the Dungeon System

In Dragonflight Season 4, developers introduced significant updates to the dungeon system. This included a “squish” that made heroic and Mythic dungeons more challenging, exciting, and rewarding. However, some dungeons were made easier by removing affixes and timers to accommodate more casual players. In The War Within Season 1, Blizzard made additional improvements and tweaks, especially in terms of affixes. Here’s a breakdown of the changes:
  • Normal Mode:
No changes made.
All dungeons are accessible.
  • Heroic Mode:
Difficulty and rewards are now scaled to the level of former normal Mythic dungeons.
No Mythic mechanics or changes.
Only seasonal dungeons are available in this mode.
Still accessible via automatic group finder.
  • Normal Mythic Mode:
Difficulty and rewards have been scaled to level 10 of the former Mythic+ system.
No time limits, affixes, or restrictions on spec or talent changes during the run.
Now has a daily reset timer.
Only seasonal dungeons are available.

Available only through manual group assembly.

  • Mythic+ Mode:
Difficulty and rewards increase as usual, but now only up to level 10 (e.g., a level 5 dungeon in the new system matches the difficulty and rewards of a level 15 dungeon in the old system).
Time limits and affixes are still present.
Major changes have been made to Mythic+ affixes, which now activate at levels 2, 4, 7, 10, and 12.
Mythic+ ratings remain unchanged.
Only seasonal dungeons are available.

Accessible only through manual group assembly.

Reward Changes

With the Mythic+ overhaul, there have also been some adjustments to dungeon rewards:

Loot Scaling: the primary reward tiers remain largely unchanged, but they now align with the adjusted dungeon levels. Loot quality scales up to level 10 dungeons.

Valor Points: the system for earning Valor remains mostly the same, but now matches the adjusted dungeon levels. For example, completing a level 5 dungeon in the new system grants the same currency amount as a level 15 dungeon in the old system.

  • Crest Distribution:

The principles behind crest distribution remain similar, but the adjusted difficulty levels mean that lower-tier crests are no longer available from Mythic+ dungeons. Players will need to engage in other activities, such as heroic dungeons, to earn them.

Crests are now awarded as follows:

Second-tier crests are guaranteed after completing a normal Mythic dungeon or Mythic+ dungeons of levels 2-3.
Third-tier crests are awarded after completing Mythic+ dungeons of levels 4-8.
Fourth-tier crests are awarded after completing Mythic+ dungeons of level 9 or higher.

New and Updated Affixes

In The War Within Season 1, Blizzard has significantly revamped the Mythic+ affix system, removing several old affixes and introducing new ones, along with making changes to the remaining affixes. Here’s a summary of how affixes now work:
  • At Level 2: Depending on the week, one of the following Xal’atath’s Bargain affixes will be activated: Xal’atath’s Bargain: Ascension, Xal’atath’s Bargain: Void’s Servant, Xal’atath’s Bargain: Oblivion, or Xal’atath’s Bargain: Devouring.
  • At Level 4: Either Tyrannical or Fortified will be activated, depending on the week.
  • At Level 7: The affix Challenger’s Peril will be activated.
  • At Level 10: The remaining affix from either Fortified or Tyrannical will be activated.
  • At Level 12: The current Xal’atath’s Bargain affix is replaced by Xal’atath’s Betrayal.
Several former affixes have been removed from the rotation, including:
  • Level 4+ affixes: Entangling, Raging, Sanguine, Bolstering, Volcanic.
  • Level 7+ affixes: Spiteful, Necrotic, Inspiring, Raging, Explosive.

Detailed Overview of Active Affixes in The War Within Season 1

Level 2: Xal’atath’s Bargain

At level 2, depending on the current week, one of the following Xal’atath’s Bargain affixes will activate: Ascension, Void’s Servant, Oblivion, or Devouring.
  • Xal’atath’s Bargain: Ascendant: During combat, Xal’atath summons 10 Ascension Spheres periodically, which begin channeling Cosmic Ascension for 6.5 seconds. If the spell completes, nearby enemies gain a 10% movement speed and haste buff for 20 seconds. Players can interrupt, knockback, crowd-control, or dispel the spheres to prevent the cast. Successfully interrupting the spheres grants players a 2% increase in movement speed and haste for 20 seconds per sphere.
  • Xal’atath’s Bargain: Voidbound: During combat, Xal’atath summons a Void Emissary, which begins channeling Dark Prayer for 1.5 seconds. This reduces damage taken by nearby enemies by 10% for 3 seconds per cast, stacking. Defeating the emissary grants players the Otherworldly Blessing, increasing ability cooldown recovery by 20% and healing received by 10% for 20 seconds, stacking.
  • Xal’atath’s Bargain: Oblivion: Xal’atath periodically summons Void Crystals that slowly move toward nearby enemies or players. If absorbed by enemies, they gain the Fractured Essence effect, increasing their damage by 10% per stack. If players absorb the crystals, they gain Void Essence, increasing mastery by 2% and self-healing by 1% for 20 seconds, stacking.
  • Xal’atath’s Bargain: Devour: Xal’atath summons a Void Rift, applying the Void Rift debuff to all players. This deals shadow damage equal to 1% of the player’s maximum health over 15 seconds. The effect can be dispelled through high healing or any dispel ability. If successfully dispelled, players gain the Residual Void buff, which increases critical strike chance by 4% and maximum health by 2% for 20 seconds, stacking. If the effect expires naturally, enemies are healed for 2% of their maximum health every 2 seconds for 10 seconds.
  • Level 4: Tyrannical or Fortified
At level 4, one of the two key affixes will activate, alternating each week between Tyrannical and Fortified:
  • Tyrannical: Bosses are empowered, with a 25% increase in health and a 15% increase in damage.
  • Fortified: Non-boss enemies are empowered, with a 20% increase in health and damage.
These affixes alternate weekly, ensuring you won’t encounter the same affix two weeks in a row.

Level 7: Challenger’s Peril

At level 7, the Challenger’s Peril affix is activated, making dungeon deaths more punishing. Each player death subtracts 15 seconds from the dungeon timer instead of the usual 5 seconds. This makes avoiding deaths in high-level dungeons more crucial than ever, as every mistake can significantly impact your run.

Level 10: Fortified or Tyrannical

At level 10, either the Fortified or Tyrannical affix from level 4 will return, alternating with the other. If Tyrannical was active at level 4, then Fortified will activate at level 10, and vice versa. This ensures that the same affix does not appear at both levels 4 and 10 in the same week.

Level 12: Xal’atath’s Guile

At level 12, the current Xal’atath’s Bargain affix is replaced by Xal’atath’s Guile, which significantly increases the difficulty of the dungeon. This affix boosts the health and damage of all enemies by 20%, while also removing any positive effects players received from the previous Xal’atath bargains. This means that dungeons become notably more difficult at level 12, offering a steep challenge compared to earlier levels.

Seasonal Rewards

Season 1 of The War Within offers several prestigious rewards for those who excel in Mythic+ dungeons:

Titles and Mounts
:
  • “Forged” Title for achieving a Mythic+ rating of 1,500+ points.
  • Diamond Mechsuit Mount for reaching a Mythic+ rating of 2,000+ points.
  • Luminous Nerubian Catalyst Stone for a Mythic+ rating of 2,500+ points.
  • “Forged Hero” Title for finishing the season in the top 0.1% of Mythic+ players in your region.
Players will also have access to additional rating-based achievements:

Additionally, players who reach a 2,500+ Mythic+ score will automatically complete the achievement Web-Wrapped in the Finest Silks,” granting them a Luminous Nerubian Catalyst Stone.

Dungeon Teleports

Players who successfully complete specific Mythic+ dungeons at level 10 or higher within the time limit will earn an achievement and a group-wide teleport to that dungeon. Here’s a list of the dungeons and their corresponding teleport rewards:

Dungeon Features

Time Streams

One of the new features introduced in Dragonflight, carried over into The War Within, is the Time Streams portal. This portal, inspired by the Dawn of Infinity, allows players to quickly access old dungeons that are part of the current Mythic+ rotation.
The entrance to Time Streams is located at Peacekeeper’s Refuge in Dor’nogal at coordinates 53.8, 38.7. Alongside the portal, you will find Lindormi, the Mythic+ enthusiast. Speaking to her allows players to manage their keystone levels and access the quickest routes to dungeons.
Inside the Time Streams, there are four portals leading to different locations with old dungeons included in the Season 1 Mythic+ rotation:
  • Leftmost Portal: Takes players to Ardenweald, where they can access the Mists of Tirna Scithe dungeon. Players will be transported to the center of Ardenweald near Heart of the Forest (43.9, 52.1), from where they can reach the dungeon entrance in 10-15 seconds (35.5, 53.7).
  • Far Left Portal: Leads to Bastion, where players can enter Plaguefall. They will arrive near the Elysian Hold (46.8, 49.1) and can fly to the entrance in about 10-15 seconds (40.0, 55.4).
  • Rightmost Portal: Transports players to Twilight Highlands, near the entrance to Grim Batol. The portal drops players at 26.1, 55.0, near the dungeon entrance (19.3, 54.6).
  • Far Right Portal: Brings players to Tiragarde Sound, where they can access Siege of Boralus. They will appear atop a high mountain (85.0, 60.4), close to the entrance for either faction. The Alliance entrance is located far to the north (72.2, 15.5), while the Horde entrance is more easily accessible (88.3, 51.1). Both factions can use either entrance.

Additional Buffs

Throughout many dungeons in Season 1 of The War Within, players can find special class-specific or skill-specific buffs to assist with Mythic+ progression. These bonuses provide tactical advantages and can improve final dungeon results. Here’s a list of available buffs:
  • Ara-Kara, City of EchoesTailors:

Scattered throughout the dungeon are bodies of Discordant Attendants. Tailors from Kazz Algar with 25+ skill points can interact with these bodies to gain a one-time use ability called Silk Thread, which stuns regular creatures (and mini-boss Sureki Guardian before Awanox) for 10 seconds.

  • City of ThreadsRogues, Priests, and Engineers:

In specific locations, Shadowweavers connected to the Queen Ansurek projection can be activated by Rogues, Priests, and Engineers with 25+ skill points. This grants the entire party a 30-second buff, Stolen Power, increasing damage and healing by 15% and movement speed by 50%. Stone VaultWarriors, Dwarves, and Blacksmiths: Scattered across the main halls are Imbued Iron Bars, which can be interacted with by Warriors, Dwarves, or Blacksmiths with 25+ skill points. This applies the Imbued Iron Energy buff to all party members, increasing versatility by 10% for 10 minutes.

  • Mists of Tirna ScitheDruids, Night Elves, Tauren, and Herbalists:

There are two special objects in this dungeon:

Overgrown Roots: These can be activated to skip a portion of the dungeon, granting the party a 10% increase to all stats for a short time. This can be triggered by Druids, Night Elves, Tauren, or Herbalists with 25+ skill points.

Depleted Anima Seed: This creates a resurrection point between the first and second bosses, speeding up recovery after failed attempts. This point can be activated by any player after defeating the first boss.

The Necrotic Wake: Universal Items

There are various weapons on the ground that all players can use. These items provide powerful temporary effects to aid in dungeon progression:
  • Discharged Anima: Releases stored anima, dealing Arcane damage to nearby enemies and interrupting their spellcasting once every second for 8 seconds.
  • Bloody Javelin: Throws a Kyrian spear at the target, dealing instant physical damage to pierced enemies in a line, followed by additional physical damage every 2 seconds for 16 seconds. Affected enemies take 20% increased damage for the duration. This effect stacks.
  • Forgotten Forgehammer: Throws a Kyrian hammer at the target, dealing physical damage and stunning the target for 8 seconds.
  • Discarded Shield: Upon activation, reduces the damage taken by allies within 8 yards by 50% for 6 seconds.
