Skyriding Overview
- Mounts are now more versatile than ever. You can easily switch between skyriding and traditional flight, and of course, all ground mounts are still usable.
- Excitingly, you can now utilize other mounts for Skyriding. After a lengthy wait, you can finally add your preferred mounts to the action bar once again!
- Skyriding extends beyond just Khaz Algar and the Dragon Isles. You can enjoy dynamic flight in previous expansions as well.
Skyriding Classes
- Dracthyr can utilize Skyriding mechanics, which are also based on momentum and gravity;
- They can take off from any location, thanks to their Soar racial ability;
- Soar unlocks two additional abilities: Surge Forward and Skyward Ascent. Surge Forward enables a quick forward dash, boosting your speed, while Skyward Ascent allows for an upward leap, increasing speed at the cost of some momentum;
- Soar has a cooldown upon landing;
- Soar functions independently of the Vigor system or Skyriding skills, which may limit long-distance travel capabilities.
The second class with integrated Skyride capabilities is the Druid. Their shapeshifted Flight Form allows them to take advantage of dynamic flight, much like the Evokers do.
- Additionally, to gain access to the customization options for your Drake’s appearance, you must fulfill specific requirements such as completing quests, exploring new areas, achieving certain milestones, or collecting Drakewatcher Manuscripts for various customization features. Once an option is unlocked, it applies to all characters on your account, allowing you to enhance the Drakes of your alternate characters as well.
Skyriding Mount Types
If you’ve experienced Dragonflight, you may recall that Skyriding was originally exclusive to drake mounts. However, that limitation has been lifted, allowing for a broader range of Skyriding mounts in World of Warcraft. These mounts can now be categorized into two main types: Drakes and Other Mounts.
Understanding this classification is important because Dragonflight Drakes come with customizable features and can be altered at the Rostrum of Transformation. In contrast, the other mounts, while still stunning and appealing, do not offer the same level of personalization.
Skyriding Drakes
As previously noted, Dragonflight Drakes belong to a distinct category of flying mounts. These exceptional mounts include:
- Highland Drake;
- Renewed Proto-Drake;
- Windborne Velocidrake;
- Cliffside Wylderdrake;
- Winding Slitherdrake;
- Flourishing Whimsydrake;
- Grotto Netherwing Drake.
The drakes offer extensive customization options. You can personalize various features, including:
- Horns: Forms, Color, and Style;
- Scales: Type, Color;
- Skin Patterns;
- Body parts: Legs, Tail, Back, Throat;
- Head: Nose, Chin, Mouth, Brow, Ears, Eyes;
- Armor: Body and Head Armor, its color, etc.
To modify a Drake’s appearance at the Rostrum of Transformation, specific criteria must be met:
- Firstly, to have a Drake. These unique mounts are obtained by completing special questlines in Dragonflight:
Drake | Quest | Details |
---|---|---|
Highland Drake | Calling the Blue Dragons | Part of The Azure Span Main Questline |
Renewed Proto-Drake | Dragonriding | Part of The Waking Shores Main Questline |

- Additionally, to gain access to the customization options for your Drake’s appearance, you must fulfill specific requirements such as completing quests, exploring new areas, achieving certain milestones, or collecting Drakewatcher Manuscripts for various customization features. Once an option is unlocked, it applies to all characters on your account, allowing you to enhance the Drakes of your alternate characters as well.

Skyriding Abilities
Much like the talent trees for your character, Skyriding has its own progression path. Skyriding leveling introduces a variety of new abilities that further enhance your flight mastery.
Previously, the *Dragonriding* talent tree offered over 20 talents, each requiring Dragon Glyph Embers to unlock. Now, with *WoW: The War Within*, the Skyriding talent tree has been streamlined, with some former abilities now accessible by default—making it easier and more intuitive to start Skyriding right away.
Instead of needing glyphs for skill unlocks, *WoW Skyriding Glyphs* now serve different purposes. Collecting these glyphs can earn you a valuable achievement—Khaz Algar Glyph Hunter—and a special mount reward, the Swarmite Skyhunter. This achievement, along with several other exclusive rewards, is available through *The War Within Campaign*.
Below is a list of essential Skyriding abilities that unlock at level 10, giving you access to the core mechanics of Skyriding. These skills use Vigor to help you maintain altitude and extend your flight duration, making them essential tools for any Skyrider aiming to master the skies.
Ability | Description |
---|---|
Skyriding Basics | Basic ability, which allows to automatically turn the flying mode on. To put it simply, if you jump off a cliff, your mount will extend its wings. Depending on the dynamic/steady flight option, you will either slowly soar, eventually landing, or stay in a flying position. |
Vigor | Passive ability, which regenerates Vigor. Spending time on the ground, whether mounted or dismounted, regenerates 1 Vigor every 30 sec. |
Lift Off | Simple as it is — an ability to take off the ground. |
Thrill of the Skies | This ability allows you to gain 1 Vigor every 15 sec while flying fast or moving slightly leaning forward and accelerating. |
Aerial Halt | A flap back, which allows you to reduce your speed or make a smooth landing. |
Winds of the Isles | Passive ability, allowing you to detect the gale winds, which can propel you, boosting the speed. |
Whirling Surge | Ability to spiral forward a great distance, increasing speed. |
Bronze Timelock | A fun, but sometimes useful ability to mark a waypoint on your positional timeline. Use Bronze Rewind to rewind to this location. |

Skyriding Mechanics
- Your Skyriding mounts can still be used for ground travel. To take off, either double-tap the spacebar or launch from a height;
- Flight mechanics rely heavily on momentum, creating a gliding feel initially. As you enhance your mount, flying becomes smoother and more akin to traditional flight;
- Gain speed by descending at an angle. To maintain this momentum, dive down steeply and then pull up to carry speed forward. Using a Vigor point also boosts upward flight;
- Losing all momentum means a gradual descent, ending in a safe landing. Thankfully, Skyriding eliminates fall damage when you land this way;
- When grounded, Vigor regenerates. You’ll need at least one Vigor point to launch back into the air.
Skyriding Races
If you’re looking for a real test of your Skyriding skills and a chance to go head-to-head with other players, then Skyriding races are the perfect challenge. To join, just find a Bronze Timekeeper NPC who will guide you through the entry process.
In these thrilling races, you’ll need to showcase top-tier Skyriding techniques—keeping your speed high, skillfully navigating sharp turns, and using gusts of wind to propel yourself ahead of rivals. Success requires hitting all checkpoints to extend your time and racing efficiently within the time limit.
Skyracing Local Quests also offer a fun and rewarding way to experience new and previous expansion content while leveling up, providing generous rewards for every race.
Soon, we’ll publish a guide to Skyriding Race locations to help you get started. For now, are you aiming to earn the Gold Meta-achievement **Dragon Racing Completionist**? Our professional team is ready to help you reach your peak performance and achieve the top rewards!
World Changing
The previous expansion introduced transformative updates across Azeroth’s zones, specially crafted to support the dynamic experience of drake riding. With expansive landscapes built around the new Vigor-based flight mechanics, players could fully spread their wings and soar through the vast skies.
As game designer Brian Holinka noted, “We’ve aimed to create larger spaces that truly maximize the thrill of flying, making it far more engaging.” This Dragonriding feature, immensely popular among players, laid the foundation for today’s advanced Skyriding system.
The latest addition, the **Khaz Algar** zone, embraces this same design philosophy, offering unrestricted, dynamic flight options. Across Azeroth, new zones are now wider and more open, perfectly suited to support the exhilarating freedom of Skyriding and inviting players to explore the skies.
