Key Takeaways
Alchemy is one of the primary crafting professions in WoW Forever, and it is built around herbs: you brew them into flasks, elixirs, potions and oils, and later into transmutes. At launch the profession gains 69 recipes that are new to the game, a set of camp objects, and recipes you pay for with Merchant’s Favor. Below you will find where to train it, which professions work well next to it, a route from 1 to 300 with exact material counts, and the recipes that matter most at level 60.
- Skill cap and Artisan trainers: the cap is 300 skill, and Artisan rank comes from Master Mycologist Shurome (Emerald Sanctuary), Rogvar (Swamp of Sorrows) or Kylanna Windwhisper (Feralas).
- Leveling effort: expect about 400 crafts from 1 to 300, with Herbalism plus some Fishing covering most of the reagents.
- Healing Potions moved: First Aid now owns the plain Healing Potion line; Alchemists keep the Discolored Healing Potion line and gain three new ones, Frenzy Potion, Spellblasting Potion and Mender’s Potion.
- Merchant’s Favor recipes: you can buy 28 Alchemy recipes with Merchant’s Favor, and the one that needs 300 skill is Elixir of the Grizzly.
- New flasks: each of the four new flasks, Flask of Natural Swiftness among them, gives 60 Stamina plus a bonus that is active only in the Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit and Mount Hyjal.
Alchemy Overview
Whatever your role, Alchemy has something for it, starting with cheap armor elixirs during leveling and ending with raid flasks that run for 2 hours and stay on when you die. Most recipes ask only for herbs and a vial plus a short cast, which means you can craft out in the world. Two groups break that rule: transmutes, which require a Philosopher’s Stone, and a handful of recipes that you can only make while a Fermenter or an Alchemy Laboratory is close by.
Think of the profession as a supply line for yourself and for your group. A single character who can brew elixirs, oils and flasks does not have to depend on the market for every buff, and anything you do not need can be sold to players who do. That is why the rest of this guide follows the full life of an Alchemist: training, picking a partner profession, leveling, and finally choosing the recipes that earn their keep at the cap.
New to campfires and camp objects? The WoW Forever camping guide explains how they work.
Leveling Alchemy at the same pace as your character is a good plan, and even more so with Herbalism on the side. The early elixirs make your first dungeons easier, mana potions cut the downtime between pulls, and every herb you pick while questing is one you do not have to buy by the stack on the Auction House later.
What Changed for Alchemy
Healing is where the biggest change sits. First Aid now crafts the ordinary Healing Potion line, from Minor all the way to Major Healing Potion, and those recipes use spices instead of most of the herbs. Alchemists get the Discolored Healing Potion line in exchange. A Discolored potion heals you for more than a normal potion of the same level, but afterwards 75% of that amount hits you again over time. Here are the other changes:
- New combat potions: three new lines, each with six ranks between skill 30 and 290. Mender’s Potion grants 31 Spell Healing, Spellblasting Potion 16 Spell Damage and Frenzy Potion 28 Attack Power for 30 sec.
- New flasks: the four Natural flasks, Flask of Natural Swiftness, Flask of Natural Precision, Flask of Natural Aggression and Flask of Natural Accuracy, require 300 skill and use new herbs like Marefoil, Demonsage and Death Lotus.
- New transmute: Transmute: Legionite makes a Legionite Bar out of a Fel Crystal and a Heavy Thorium Bar. It shares the cooldown of Transmute: Arcanite, a little under two days.
- Merchant’s Favor recipes: trade camp vendors sell 28 recipes. At 300 Alchemy Alchemy Certification also becomes available: it costs 1,000 Merchant’s Favor and grants “the Alchemist” title to your whole account, but only characters with 300 Alchemy can display it.
That brings Alchemy to 178 recipes in WoW Forever, 69 of which are new compared with Classic. The Discolored Healing Potion recipes have their own trainers: Alliance players learn them from Odd Child, Horde players from Apothecary Renferrel.
Alchemy Camp Objects
You place camp objects next to a Campfire, and everyone sitting near it receives the buff. Each tier also contains the effect of the tier below, which is why a Fermenter works as a Mana Well too. The three objects are:
| Camp Object | Skill | Recipe Source | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mana Well | 20 | Alchemy trainer | Mana regeneration for players sitting nearby |
| Fermenter | 140 | Drop from Rath’mael in Ruins of Lordaeron | Mana Well effect, allows crafting certain reagents |
| Alchemy Laboratory | 300 | TBA | Mana Well effect, required for advanced recipes |
The Mana Well costs almost nothing: one Empty Vial and one Peacebloom. The Alchemy Laboratory is a bigger investment, with two Dreamfoil, a Crystal Vial and a Lich’s Index Finger in the recipe.
Note: where the Alchemy Laboratory recipe comes from has not been announced yet, which is why the table shows TBA as its source.
Where to Learn Alchemy
Every capital city has an Alchemy trainer, and several starting villages can teach you the first rank as well. To move past it you need the right skill and the right character level.
Alchemy Ranks
There are four ranks, each with its own requirements:
| Rank | Max Skill | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | 75 | No level requirement |
| Journeyman | 150 | 50 skill, level 10 |
| Expert | 225 | 125 skill, level 20 |
| Artisan | 300 | 200 skill, level 35 |
In practice the ranks gate each other in two ways. You need enough skill from the previous rank, and your character must also have reached the listed level. A character who levels quickly may therefore be held back by skill, while a character who crafts a lot at a low level may be held back by level, which is exactly the situation Artisan creates at level 35. Check both numbers before you walk to a trainer.
Alchemy Trainers
Use this table to find a trainer for each rank. For Apprentice, only the capitals and a few villages near them are listed, since every race also has an Apprentice trainer near its starting zone.
| Rank | Alliance | Horde | Neutral |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | Tel’Athir in Stormwind City, Vosur Brakthel in Ironforge, Milla Fairancora in Darnassus, Alchemist Mallory in Goldshire | Whuut in Orgrimmar, Kray in Thunder Bluff, Doctor Martin Felben in Undercity, Carolai Anise in Brill | Nyassa Swiftdraught in Shen’dar Village, Zephras Isle |
| Journeyman | Lilyssia Nightbreeze in Stormwind City, Tally Berryfizz in Ironforge, Kylanna in Ashenvale | Yelmak in Orgrimmar, Bena Winterhoof in Thunder Bluff, Doctor Marsh in Undercity, Serge Hinott in Tarren Mill | Jaxin Chong in Booty Bay |
| Expert | Ainethil in Darnassus, Linzy Blackbolt in Dalaran, Alterac Mountains | Doctor Herbert Halsey in Undercity | None |
| Artisan | Kylanna Windwhisper in Feathermoon Stronghold, Feralas | Rogvar in Stonard, Swamp of Sorrows | Master Mycologist Shurome in Emerald Sanctuary |
Because Artisan needs character level 35 as well as 200 skill, a low-level Alchemist cannot train it until the character catches up. If you are still a long way from 35, our WoW Forever Hourly Driving service can help with the levels while you gather herbs for the next steps, or take care of other chores.
Best Professions to Combine With Alchemy
Herbalism is the obvious partner, because herbs are the main reagent in nearly every Alchemy recipe. If you buy each Peacebloom and Kingsblood on the Auction House, leveling gets costly, while a Herbalist gathers most of them during normal questing. Here is how other professions compare:
| Profession | Why It Fits Alchemy |
|---|---|
| Herbalism | Gathers nearly every herb you need, both for leveling and for flasks |
| Fishing | Catches Stonescale Eel, Firefin Snapper and Oily Blackmouth for oils without using a primary profession slot |
| Mining | Provides Thorium Bars for Transmute: Arcanite and Heavy Thorium Bars for Transmute: Legionite |
| First Aid | Now crafts the Healing Potions, so it shares vials and several herbs with Alchemy |
Fishing matters more than it seems, since the route below eats 34 Stonescale Eel, 62 Oily Blackmouth and 102 Firefin Snapper. Alchemy has no racial bonus in WoW Forever, so any race or class can take it. If you would rather not gather at all, our Herbalism boost can raise that profession to 300 for you, so herbs up to Black Lotus are within reach.
Herbalism is the natural partner here: our WoW Forever herbalism guide covers the 1-300 route and herb gold.
Earning Gold With Alchemy
Most Alchemy gold comes from two things: transmutes and raid consumables. With Transmute: Arcanite you combine an Arcane Crystal and a Thorium Bar into an Arcanite Bar, a material Blacksmiths and Engineers need for their top recipes. Transmute: Legionite follows the same pattern with a Fel Crystal and a Heavy Thorium Bar. Each transmute has a cooldown of about 47 hours. Check what Arcanite and Legionite are worth on your realm, minus the reagent cost, before you decide which bar to make.
Consumables bring in the rest. Raid groups go through flasks and elixirs weekly, and flask sales follow the Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit and Mount Hyjal, because that is the only content where the Natural flasks give their extra bonus. Early in the season, cheap leveling elixirs move well; later on, common herbs get cheaper as more and more players hit 300 Herbalism.
A sensible habit is to split your crafting between sale and personal use. Keep a few of every flask and elixir for your own raid nights, and sell the surplus while demand is high. Transmutes are the exception, because only an Alchemist can make them and the long cooldown means each use should go to whichever bar is worth more that week.
For a wider comparison of gold methods, see our WoW Forever gold guide.
Short on gold? The WoW Forever gold guide shows ways to earn it.
Making consumables for yourself can lower your raid costs too, especially when flask prices go up. Still, compare against the Auction House before you burn rare herbs, because the reagents alone sometimes sell for more than the potion. If you would rather buy gold than farm it, the WoW Forever gold section of the store is the place to look.
Tip: with a cooldown of about 47 hours, a transmute you forget to use is gold lost, so note when it comes back up and plan your crafting around it.
Alchemy Leveling From 1 to 300
With the route below, Alchemy from 1 to 300 takes roughly 400 crafts; your luck with skill-ups decides the exact count. Orange recipes always give a point, yellow ones often do, and green ones only rarely. Two Legacy perks help here: Working Overtime adds as much as 20% to your skill-up chance, and Dedicated Study gives your lowest profession one extra point every 23 hours.
The route falls into three parts. Up to about 100 you make cheap elixirs, potions and oils, mostly from Silverleaf, Peacebloom, Mageroyal and fish. Between roughly 100 and 209, earlier oils become reagents for better products, and the Greater Discolored Healing Potion and the first vendor recipe come in. From 209 to 300 you need herbs from higher-level zones, switch to Crystal Vials at 237, and finish on vendor recipes, ending with Major Mana Potion.
Alchemy Materials List
Materials are split at skill 225 because the herbs after that point grow in zones for level 40 and up. Trade supply vendors always stock vials; all other materials you gather, fish, loot or buy from other players.
| Material | 1-225 | 225-300 | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Empty Vial | 202 | None | Vendor |
| Leaded Vial | 72 | 60 | Vendor |
| Crystal Vial | None | 58 | Vendor |
| Peacebloom | 86 | None | Herbalism |
| Silverleaf | 65 | None | Herbalism |
| Mageroyal | 25 | None | Herbalism |
| Briarthorn | 8 | None | Herbalism |
| Swiftthistle | 30 | None | Herbalism |
| Kingsblood | 52 | None | Herbalism |
| Liferoot | 20 | 26 | Herbalism |
| Stranglekelp | 20 | 26 | Herbalism |
| Arthas’ Tears | None | 14 | Herbalism |
| Gromsblood | None | 10 | Herbalism |
| Sungrass | None | 34 | Herbalism |
| Dreamfoil | None | 15 | Herbalism |
| Icecap | None | 10 | Herbalism |
| Oily Blackmouth | 62 | None | Fishing |
| Firefin Snapper | 102 | None | Fishing |
| Stonescale Eel | None | 34 | Fishing |
| Murloc Eye | 19 | None | Murlocs |
| Large Fang | 22 | None | Beasts |
The counts are averages, so add about 10% on top when you buy or farm. Prefer not to farm at all? Our Profession Kits are an option for getting the materials in one go.
Alchemy 1-300 Route
Trainer recipes carry most of the route, and four steps need a recipe from a vendor. The full route:
Do not sell your oils: Blackmouth Oil, Fire Oil and Stonescale Oil all go into later steps. The Stonescale Oil from the 250-260 step matters most. One craft makes three oils, so the 34 crafts in that step cover the next one.
Making 34 Elixirs of Greater Defense takes 68 Stonescale Oil, and you will still have some spare. The vendor recipes, for example Nature Protection Potion and Great Rage Potion, have limited stock, so pick them up early in case another Alchemist gets there first.
Warning: the Major Mana Potion recipe for the last step is sold by Magnus Frostwake in Caer Darrow, Western Plaguelands. If you cannot see him, you first need Spectral Essence from the related quest chain, so sort this out before you buy Dreamfoil and Icecap for the final five points.
A practical way to use the route is to print the material list first, gather or buy everything for one half, and only then start crafting. Walking back and forth to vendors for single vials wastes more time than the crafts themselves. Because the skill-up chance is random, you will sometimes pass a step early; when a recipe turns green, move straight to the next row instead of finishing the planned number of crafts.

Buying all the herbs and fish instead of gathering them makes 300 an expensive goal. Our Alchemy boost takes the skill to 300 for you, so you can start on raid flasks, elixirs and Arcanite Bars without the grind.
Top Alchemy Recipes at Level 60
At level 60 the recipes worth having are flasks, the new combat potions and transmutes, since raiders buy them every week. A flask runs for 2 hours, survives death, and you can only have one active at once. The most valuable picks are below.
Classic and Natural Flasks
The four classic flasks each use one Black Lotus:
| Flask | Effect |
|---|---|
| Flask of the Titans | +1,200 maximum Health |
| Flask of Distilled Wisdom | +2,000 maximum Mana |
| Flask of Supreme Power | Up to +150 spell damage |
| Flask of Chromatic Resistance | +25 to every resistance |
Every Natural flask grants 60 Stamina, while its second bonus applies only in the Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit and Mount Hyjal, and they are brewed from Death Lotus and an Imbued Vial, a vial that only Alchemy and Herbalism suppliers sell.
| Flask | Everywhere | Second bonus (Hyjal zones) |
|---|---|---|
| Flask of Natural Accuracy | 60 Stamina | 5% Hit |
| Flask of Natural Aggression | 60 Stamina | 4% Critical Strike |
| Flask of Natural Precision | 60 Stamina | Attacks 5% less likely to be dodged or parried |
| Flask of Natural Swiftness | 60 Stamina | 5% Haste |
Elixirs, Combat Potions and Transmutes
- Elixirs: for 30 min, Elixir of the Grizzly grants 25 Strength plus 2% critical strike chance, a strong pick for melee.
- Combat potions: for boss pulls, the highest ranks of Frenzy Potion, Spellblasting Potion and Mender’s Potion give a short power spike. Against Beasts, Potion of Beast Slaying is worth 180 extra Attack Power for 5 min.
- Transmutes: both Transmute: Arcanite and Transmute: Legionite require a Philosopher’s Stone, and each one is usable once every two days or a little less.
The recipe sources for the four Natural flasks and the Alchemy Laboratory are not announced yet (TBA). Raids and world drops at level 60 are the likely places to watch, but nothing is confirmed. Remember that a Natural flask only reaches its full value inside the Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit and Mount Hyjal. If you plan to raid there, our Hyjal Summit run is one way to get through the raid and pick up gear.
When you choose what to learn first, think about your own role. Melee players will get the most from Elixir of the Grizzly, casters and healers should look at Spellblasting Potion and Mender’s Potion, and anyone who sells to raids should keep a stock of the flasks their group asks for. The flasks are the strongest argument for taking the profession all the way to 300.
Merchant’s Favor Alchemy Recipes
Alliance players buy these recipes from Nina Surefire of the Azeroth Commerce Authority; on the Horde side the vendor is Apothecary Durelle, who works for Durotar Supply and Logistics. Merchant’s Favor comes from Waylaid supply crates: fill them, then hand them in at the trade camp. Each recipe is priced by its tier:
| Merchant’s Favor | Reputation | Skill | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| 45 | None | 65-140 | Mender’s Potion, Spellblasting Potion, Frenzy Potion |
| 120 | Friendly | 165-245 | Dragonfire Potion, Elixir of Greater Fortitude, Greater Mageblood Elixir |
| 180 | Honored | 250-285 | Major Mender’s Potion, Elixir of Sages, Elixir of the Whale |
| 240 | Honored | 290-300 | Major Frenzy Potion, Elixir of the Grizzly |
Alchemy Legacy Perks
Legacy perks make skill gains faster, and Alchemy also pays into your Legacy Points through three challenges. Your account earns one point the first time it reaches 150, 225 and 300 Alchemy skill, which means one Artisan Alchemist collects all three Legacy Points. These two perks affect the profession:
- Working Overtime: each rank adds 4% to your chance of a skill point from primary, secondary and class tradeskills, for 20% once you own all 5 ranks.
- Dedicated Study: once every 23 hours, your lowest primary or secondary profession gets 1 skill point. When all five professions sit at 300, the perk hands out 2 to 4 random Elemental Essences.
Because the points are tied to first-time milestones on your account, a second Alchemist will not earn them again. One dedicated Alchemist is enough to collect all three, and any other characters can spend their profession slots elsewhere.
Tip: if you plan to level several professions, Working Overtime is the more flexible perk, because it boosts every tradeskill and not only Alchemy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Short answers to what players ask most about Alchemy: leveling, ranks, Healing Potions, Legacy perks and gold.
Is Alchemy worth it in WoW Forever?
Alchemy is worth it in WoW Forever, since raid groups rely on its flasks, elixirs and transmutes every week. While you level, the new low-level potions add value too.
Which profession pairs best with Alchemy?
Herbalism pairs best with Alchemy, because herbs go into almost every recipe. Fishing is a strong second pick, as the oils on the leveling route need more than 190 fish.
How many crafts does Alchemy 1-300 take?
Leveling Alchemy to 300 takes about 400 crafts with this route. The crafting itself is fast; gathering or buying the herbs and fish is what eats your time.
What do the higher Alchemy ranks require?
The higher Alchemy ranks require both skill and character level: Journeyman needs 50 skill and level 10, Expert 125 skill and level 20, and Artisan 200 skill and level 35. You train Artisan in Feathermoon Stronghold, Stonard or Emerald Sanctuary.
Can Alchemists still craft Healing Potions?
Alchemists can no longer craft the regular Healing Potions, because First Aid took over that line. Instead they brew the Discolored Healing Potion line, which heals more but returns 75% of the healing to you as damage over time.
Which Legacy perks help Alchemy?
Two Legacy perks help Alchemy: Working Overtime, worth up to 20% extra skill-up chance, and Dedicated Study, which gives your lowest profession 1 skill every 23 hours. The profession also awards three Legacy Points, for reaching 150, 225 and 300 skill.
Does race or class affect Alchemy?
Race and class do not affect Alchemy in WoW Forever, as there is no racial bonus for it, so anyone can take the profession.
Can you make gold with Alchemy in WoW Forever?
You can make good gold with Alchemy in WoW Forever, because only Alchemists can transmute. Other crafters buy Arcanite and Legionite Bars, and raiders buy flasks every week.
To sum up, Alchemy covers your consumables from leveling to raids and adds two transmute cooldowns at 300, provided you have a steady herb supply. Take Herbalism alongside it, save the oils from the route, and grab the limited vendor recipes early. Once you hit Artisan, collect Merchant’s Favor toward Elixir of the Grizzly, and keep an eye out for the level 60 flask recipes, whose sources are not announced yet.
