Classic Mage AoE Leveling at a Glance
Checked 12 October 2026. This guide is for Classic Era rules (level 1 to 60). Wowhead’s Mage AoE guide it relies on was last updated in August 2025.
Mage AoE grinding means pulling a whole camp and killing it with Blizzard while you kite it. It is the fastest way to level a Mage if the camps are not taken, and it is also a gold farm at level 60. The table has the decisions that matter most:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| When does real AoE grinding start? | Level 22. You respec then, because you can finally max Improved Blizzard |
| Talent builds | Before 22: Fire 0/11/2 for fast single-target leveling. From 22: Arcane/Frost 19/0/32. At 60: 15/0/36 (adds Shatter and Magic Absorption) |
| Stats | Intellect, then Stamina, then Spirit. Area spells gain little from spell power |
| Best race | Gnome for Alliance (Expansive Mind, bigger mana pool). Troll for Horde |
| Professions | Tailoring and Enchanting use the cloth and green items you farm |
| Core spells | Frost Nova, Blink, Blizzard, Cone of Cold, Ice Block, Cold Snap, Ice Barrier |
Early Levels: Preparing for AoE Farming
Below level 22 you are not an AoE farmer yet. Quest with single-target spells and pick up the AoE tools as you go:
| Level | Spell | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 14 | Arcane Explosion | Small pulls together with Frost Nova |
| 16 | Flamestrike | Open the pull with it, then Arcane Explosion |
| 20 | Blink and Blizzard | Distance and your main AoE |
- Talents before 22. Wowhead recommends a Fire build (0/11/2) that takes advantage of Fireball’s damage to two- or three-shot most mobs while you quest.
- Gear. The Wowhead guide author suggests “of the Eagle” green gear from the Auction House (Intellect and Stamina) to start with, because crit and spell power add little to Blizzard.
- Spells to buy. Take every new rank of your buffs (Arcane Intellect, armor spells, Ice Barrier), Fireball until 22 and Frostbolt afterwards, plus Arcane Explosion, Flamestrike, Blizzard and Cone of Cold. Only the first rank of utility spells such as Frost Nova, Blink and Evocation is needed.
Level 22-30: Transitioning to Frost Mage AoE Farming
Respec at 22
At 22 you can reach rank 3 of Improved Blizzard, which slows mobs inside the Blizzard so they stay in it. The Wowhead build for this stage is Arcane 19, Frost 32 (open it in the talent calculator). You take the AoE-boosting talents and skip the single-target ones.
The rotation Wowhead recommends
- Keep Arcane Intellect, Frost or Ice Armor and Ice Barrier up.
- Pull with your wand or mount until you have a pack that is tightly bunched, running if the damage gets heavy.
- Frost Nova, then move away or Blink until the edge of Blizzard’s range just reaches them.
- Cast Blizzard twice, stepping back a little after the first so the second still hits everything.
- Cone of Cold when they are close, kite until Frost Nova is ready, repeat from step 3.
- Finish with Arcane Explosion or the wand. Use Evocation or a mana gem when needed.
If a Frost Nova gets resisted, Cold Snap resets it so you can cast it again at once.
Where to farm (levels 20 to 30)
| Faction | Mobs | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Alliance | Mosshide Mongrels and Gnolls | Mosshide Fern, Wetlands |
| Horde | Hillsbrad Miners and Farmhands | Hillsbrad Fields, Hillsbrad Foothills |
| Alliance | Skeletal Horrors and Fiends | Raven Hill Cemetery, Duskwood |
| Horde | Hillsbrad Miners and Foremen | Azurelode Mine, Hillsbrad Foothills |
| Alliance | Nightbane Vile Fangs and Tainted Ones | The Rotten Orchard, Duskwood |
The author’s rule for when to move on: when you can kill the new camp reliably. Be about the same level as the mobs or 1 to 2 levels below them, otherwise resists start to hurt.
Level 31-40: Ice Block and Cone of Cold
At level 30 you get Ice Block. Wowhead uses it to force a spread-out pack into a tight group: pull, Ice Block so they bunch up around you, then Frost Nova and start the Blizzard rotation. Its cooldown is long, so plan the pull around it.
Cone of Cold adds burst when mobs are close. Keep Ice Barrier up when you pull with your mount (it is a Frost talent, available from level 40).
| Faction | Mobs | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Both | Ferocious and Cave Yetis | Darrow Hill, Hillsbrad Foothills |
| Both | Syndicate Footpads and Thieves | Sofera’s Naze, Hillsbrad Foothills |
| Horde | Dabyrie Militia and Laborers | Dabyrie Farmstead, Arathi Highlands |
| Alliance | Hammerfall Peons and Grunts | Go’Shek Farm, Arathi Highlands |
| Both | Mirefin Puddlejumpers and Murlocs | Witch Hill, Dustwallow Marsh |
Level 41-60: Mastering Mage AoE Farming
From 40 to 50, the open-world spots are mostly murlocs, pirates and undead. In the 50s, Western Plaguelands takes over (the old version of this guide put it at 41 to 50, which is too low for its mobs).
Levels 40 to 50
| Mobs | Location |
|---|---|
| Deathstrike Tarantulas | Stagalbog, Swamp of Sorrows |
| Marsh Inkspewers and Murlocs | Misty Reed Post, Swamp of Sorrows |
| Southsea Swashbucklers and Pirates | Lost Rigger Cove, Tanaris |
| Cursed and Tainted Oozes | Ruins of Constellas / Jaedenar, Felwood |
| Skeletal Flayers and Slavering Ghouls | Sorrow Hill, Western Plaguelands |
Levels 50 to 60
| Mobs | Location |
|---|---|
| Rotting Cadavers and Blighted Zombies | Dalson’s Tears, Western Plaguelands |
| Scarlet Lumberjacks | Northridge Lumber Camp, Western Plaguelands |
| Scarlet Workers (watch for elites) | Hearthglen, Western Plaguelands |
At 60: dungeons
Wowhead’s dungeon tabs for AoE grinding are the Stockade, Razorfen Kraul, Scarlet Monastery, Zul’Farrak, Blackrock Spire, Dire Maul and Zul’Gurub. The Stockade is the first dungeon you can seriously farm: it holds many tightly packed groups of humanoids that drop silver and Wool Cloth. In Maraudon you can solo some areas, and at 60 the Zulian Crocolisks in Zul’Gurub are the best targets, which is why Wowhead recommends Trolls (Beast Slaying) on the Horde side.
The level 60 build (15/0/36) adds Shatter, which pairs with Flamestrike plus Cone of Cold, and Magic Absorption, which turns low-level casters into a mana source. If the dungeon mobs are purely physical (Dire Maul North and East), put that point into Arcane Resilience instead.
Essential Mage AoE Farming Tips
- Cold Snap resets your Frost cooldowns. Use it after a resisted Frost Nova and cast Nova again right away.
- Escape plan. If a pull goes wrong and Ice Block and Cold Snap are on cooldown, run and drop aggro. Wowhead notes that this is usually faster than dying and running back.
- Keep the buffs up: Arcane Intellect, Frost or Ice Armor, Ice Barrier.
- Do not stack spell power. Intellect and Stamina first. Area spells get a lower share of spell power, so more mana and more health matter more than more damage. Good late sources: the Necropile set from Scholomance, PvP sets, Magister’s, Devout and Dreadmist gear (author’s list).
- Be uncontested. AoE grinding needs many mobs and fast respawns. A crowded camp is a bad camp, so have a second spot ready.
- Pair it with Tailoring and Enchanting. You farm cloth for bags and you can disenchant the greens. Herbalism and Mining fit poorly because you stay in one place, except if you plan to farm Maraudon or Dire Maul East at 60.

Where AoE Farming Stands in October 2026
The 20th Anniversary realms moved from vanilla to The Burning Crusade on 13 January 2026, so the Fresh servers this guide was first written for are now TBC servers. The spots and builds above fit Classic Era and the Hardcore realm that stayed in the pre-expansion era (per Warcraft Wiki).
On the TBC Anniversary realms, Blizzard added anti-boosting rules to the January pre-patch. According to Warcraft Tavern, mobs in some dungeons become immune to slows and roots after about 30 seconds, mobs in other dungeons stun you after about 30 seconds even through Divine Shield, and grouping with a much higher-level player cuts your XP. On 5 February, at the expansion launch, the developers relaxed the crowd control immunity and movement speed changes, and the XP penalty stayed. Warcraft Tavern now calls Paladins the new AoE farming masters in TBC because Consecration is not affected by the damage caps that limit Blizzard. These rules are specific to the TBC Anniversary realms. For what the pre-patch changed in TBC leveling itself, see our TBC Anniversary leveling guide.
