Hunter Leveling in Midnight at a Glance

Last checked on 12 October 2026 against Icy Veins’ Hunter pages for patch 12.1. Patch 12.1.5 lands on 13 October and may reorder some talents below.

Because the cap moved to 90, a Hunter that stopped at 80 has about 4.96 million XP of new levels ahead. Icy Veins calls Hunter one of the strongest leveling classes, because the pet works as a personal tank and the class has plenty of mobility. This page covers the Hunter side of the trip: which spec to level, which pet to tame, which hero tree to take at level 71 and how the rotation looks at 80.

Which Hunter Spec Levels Fastest

Beast Mastery is the spec Icy Veins recommends for most Hunter leveling. The reason is the pet: it does a lot more damage than in the other specs and heals itself through Leech, so you can make larger pulls and fight tougher enemies without much trouble. One habit matters: keep your pet’s Growl switched on while questing in the open world and switch it off in dungeons, where the tank needs the threat.

Spec How it levels Weak point Hero tree used in the leveling build
Beast Mastery A ranged spec built from nearly instant casts, so you keep moving through the whole rotation. Misdirection lets the pet hold the pack, and you out-damage any tank Few. Reasonable damage in every situation Pack Leader
Marksmanship Front-loaded damage and strong AoE, the best of the three in dungeons. Kills most enemies before they reach you with Aimed Shot, Rapid Fire and Kill Shot The pet is weak, so it is mostly an anchor for pulling. Slower, more planned movement Sentinel
Survival The only melee Hunter. Best survivability of the three, good for both questing and dungeons. Finish packs with Wildfire Bomb The pet is less sturdy than a Beast Mastery pet, so it cannot hold the same huge pulls. Positioning matters Sentinel

If you only want one answer, level Beast Mastery. Choose Marksmanship if you plan to queue for a lot of dungeons, since its damage comes early in the fight. Survival suits players who like melee and want the extra safety. For endgame builds in any of the three, respec at 90 and follow a max-level guide.

Hero Talents and Talent Order for Levels 10-90

Almost every Hunter ability comes from the talent system in Midnight. The point schedule, including the level where hero talents begin, is the same for every class and is explained once in our Rogue leveling guide. What is specific to Hunters is which two hero trees each spec may choose between:

Spec Hero tree 1 Hero tree 2
Beast Mastery Pack Leader (in the leveling build) Dark Ranger
Marksmanship Sentinel (in the leveling build) Dark Ranger
Survival Sentinel (in the leveling build) Pack Leader

These are the early and milestone picks of the Icy Veins leveling order for 12.1. Each build is made for leveling, so respec when you reach 90.

Level Beast Mastery picks Marksmanship picks Survival picks
10 Padded Armor Padded Armor Padded Armor
11 Kill Command Aimed Shot Kill Command
13 Animal Companion Rapid Fire Wildfire Bomb
15 Barbed Shot Precise Shots Guerrilla Tactics
17 War Orders Quick Draw Boomstick
19 Cobra Shot Surging Shots Raptor Strike
34 Misdirection Misdirection Misdirection
37 Bestial Wrath Aspect of the Hydra Mongoose Fury
71 Pack Leader: Pack Mentality Sentinel: Moonlight Chakram Sentinel: Moonlight Chakram
80 Pack Leader: Shell Cover Sentinel: Lunar Calling Sentinel: Lunar Calling
89 Pack Leader: Sharpened Fangs Sentinel: Conditioning Sentinel: Conditioning

The full point-by-point lists, with an import string for characters that come back at level 80, are on the Icy Veins pages for Beast Mastery, Marksmanship and Survival. Talent orders can shift in patch 12.1.5, so read the page the day you respec.

Best Hunter Pets for Leveling

You can tame pets from level 10, and every pet does the same damage. What differs is the utility, and the right choice depends on your spec.

Spec Best pet Why
Beast Mastery Clefthoof, set to Ferocity Takes less Physical damage and more healing than any other pet. Any Clefthoof will do, and plenty are available from level 10
Marksmanship Scalehide Has Scale Shield, a one-minute damage reduction. The pet is weak in this spec, so you mostly use it as an anchor that mobs gather on
Survival Any Ferocity pet Ferocity pets heal themselves whenever they deal damage, which allows larger pulls

Ferocity pets also bring Primal Rage, a Bloodlust effect. Icy Veins suggests using it whenever a fight will last more than about thirty seconds.

For Marksmanship, Icy Veins gives a small macro that pairs the pet’s defensive with Misdirection, so one key press pulls the threat to the pet and protects it:

#showtooltip
/use Misdirection
/use Scale Shield

If your pet has a different defensive ability, replace Scale Shield with its name. Use Mend Pet on large pulls to keep the pet alive.

Rotation From Level 80

Below level 80 your rotation grows with every talent point, so follow the order above and add buttons as you get them. From 80 the priorities are stable. These follow the Icy Veins leveling pages for 12.1.

Beast Mastery

Pull with Barbed Shot or Cobra Shot, then burst the stacked mobs with Wild Thrash, Bestial Wrath and Kill Command.

  1. Use Misdirection before a big pull. It sends the threat from your Barbed Shots and Cobra Shots to the pet, so the mobs run to it. From level 48 it also reduces the damage your pet takes.
  2. Use Mend Pet on large pulls.
  3. On AoE, use Wild Thrash to keep Beast Cleave on your pet.
  4. Use Bestial Wrath on pulls and on mobs that will live through most of its 15-second duration.
  5. Use Kill Command on cooldown, Barbed Shot so it never sits at two charges, and Cobra Shot as the filler.

Marksmanship

  1. Use Misdirection liberally to move the threat to the pet.
  2. Use Moonlight Chakram after the first Aimed Shot inside each Trueshot window. The button replaces Trueshot once it is active.
  3. Place Volley on as many enemies as you can, and use Trueshot on large pulls or hard elites.
  4. Use Explosive Shot on cooldown, then Rapid Fire and Aimed Shot when they are available. Spend Precise Shots stacks on Arcane Shot or Multi-Shot before Aimed Shot.
  5. Spam Arcane Shot, or Multi-Shot against four or more targets, and fill with Steady Shot to generate Focus.

Survival

  1. Use Misdirection on the pet, and Harpoon to close gaps quickly.
  2. Use Takedown on cooldown, ideally with two stacks of Tip of the Spear, and Moonlight Chakram after the first Wildfire Bomb in each Takedown window.
  3. On AoE, use Boomstick once the whole pack fits its wide, long cone, and Wildfire Bomb on cooldown.
  4. Use Kill Command on cooldown. It builds Tip of the Spear, which empowers your other abilities, so spend the stacks.
  5. Fill with Raptor Strike.

Questing, Dungeons and Hunter Milestones

Beast Mastery is described as an excellent questing leveler. The pet holds a big pull, you do more damage than a tank would, and the pet’s Leech keeps it alive. In dungeons it behaves like any ranged DPS, with the Growl switched off. Marksmanship is the better dungeon spec of the three, thanks to burst damage and strong AoE against groups, and it is a decent questing leveler when you kill packs before they reach you. Survival works in both modes and is the safest, but it cannot take the largest pulls.

The Midnight story, its zone order, the level-up dungeons and the XP per level are the same for all classes and are covered in our Rogue leveling guide. This table collects the points where a Hunter’s play changes along the way.

Level What changes for a Hunter
10 You can tame your first pet and choose a spec; every leveling order opens with Padded Armor
34 Misdirection appears in all three leveling orders and turns the pet into your tank
48 Misdirection also cuts the damage your pet takes (noted on the Beast Mastery page)
71 Pick the hero tree: Pack Leader for Beast Mastery, Sentinel for Marksmanship and Survival in the leveling builds
78 The Midnight campaign opens; follow the route in the Rogue guide
80 Stop following the point-by-point order and use the fixed rotations above
90 Respec to an endgame build; the builds above are made for leveling only

Gear, Heirlooms and Speed Consumables

  • Gear. Take the highest item level. Icy Veins allows one exception: a ring or necklace a little lower in item level that carries two secondary stats where the other carries one.
  • Heirloom stats. Beast Mastery and Survival want Mastery and then Critical Strike. Marksmanship wants Critical Strike, which Icy Veins calls its strongest stat.
  • Gunshoes. A large movement speed boost that works where mounts do not and is much faster than a ground mount.
  • Goblin Glider Kit. Lets you glide off ledges and cover large distances quickly.
  • Light-Step Hoofplates. Mount equipment that makes ground mounts faster.
  • Fried Bonefish. A food that gives a large movement speed bonus.

You level each character once, so a small stack of these is enough.
