What Are Midnight Invasion Points?
Invasion Points — also known as the Showdown system — are the headline outdoor endgame activity introduced in WoW Midnight Patch 12.0.7. They work like a large-scale world event where Void forces invade two new zones, and your job is to push them back by completing objectives, killing rares, running events, and taking down world bosses.
If you have done Assault-style content in previous expansions, the core loop will feel familiar: show up, complete a checklist of activities, collect loot, come back next week. But 12.0.7 adds a couple of significant twists. First, the two zones — Naigtal and Val — rotate on a weekly basis, so only one is active at a time. Second, there is a proper Heroic World Tier difficulty layer that turns these zones from casual farmland into genuinely challenging content with elite patrols, creature affixes, and improved rewards.
Whether you are a casual player looking for weekly objectives or a geared main pushing for Myth-track loot, Invasion Points have something for you. Here is everything you need to know to farm them efficiently.
How to Unlock Invasion Points
Access to Invasion Points requires progressing through the Patch 12.0.7 campaign until you complete the quest "Through the Cold Rift." This opens the Voidstorm portal, which is your gateway to both Naigtal and Val.
Once you step through the portal for the first time, Normal difficulty is immediately available. You can start completing world quests, killing rares, and participating in zone events right away. There is no item level gate for Normal — if you can survive the mobs, you can farm the content.
Heroic World Tier, however, requires a bit more work. You need to defeat any world boss on Normal first. After that kill, the option to enter the zone on Heroic difficulty unlocks permanently. The recommended item level for Heroic is 274, so make sure your gear is up to the task before you step in — the difficulty jump is real.
Zone Rotation: Naigtal & Val
The Voidstorm portal rotates between the two Invasion Point zones every week at reset. Only one zone is active at any given time, which means you cannot farm both simultaneously. Check your portal each Tuesday (Wednesday for EU) to see which zone is up.
Naigtal is a fungal, overgrown landscape infested with Hal'hadar ethereal enemies. The terrain is dense and claustrophobic, with tightly-grouped enemy packs that can chain-pull if you are not careful. The world boss here is Nexus-Captain Leth'ir, an ethereal commander with void-based mechanics. Naigtal tends to feel more chaotic than Val — expect constant combat and watch your pathing through the fungal corridors.
Val is a colder, more open environment controlled by Imperator Pertinax and his Blackstar Legion forces. The zone is patrol-heavy, meaning enemies move along set routes rather than standing in fixed camps. This makes pulling safer if you plan your route, but more dangerous if you blindly charge forward and run into a patrol mid-fight. The world boss Imperator Pertinax himself is a military-themed encounter with formation-based mechanics.
Both zones offer equivalent reward tiers — neither is objectively better for loot. The main difference is playstyle: Naigtal rewards AoE-heavy specs that thrive in tight quarters, while Val rewards patient, methodical pulling.
Difficulty Tiers Explained
Invasion Points come in two fully playable difficulty tiers, with a third potentially on the way:
Normal Mode (ilvl 217+)
Standard outdoor difficulty. Mobs hit like regular world content, world quests are straightforward, and the world boss is manageable with a pickup group. This is your entry point for learning the zone layout, completing quest objectives, and gearing up for Heroic. No special mechanics beyond what the enemies naturally have.
Heroic World Tier (ilvl 274+)
This is where things get serious. Heroic World Tier adds several layers of difficulty on top of the base zone:
- Enhanced enemy health and damage — Mobs are significantly tankier and hit much harder
- Creature Affixes — Over 30 different affixes that modify enemy abilities (Arcane Sacrifice, Heavy Wounds, Shadow Strikes, Glacial Spike, Slumber Spores, and many more)
- Elite Overseers — Named elite enemies that patrol the zone and apply Stalked or Hunted debuffs to players they spot
- Improved rewards — Significantly better loot, including access to the Myth gear quest line
Mythic World Tier — There are hints in the game files pointing toward a Mythic difficulty layer, but it is not a finished or playable system yet. Expect it in a future patch if Blizzard follows through.
World Bosses: Leth'ir & Pertinax
Each zone has its own world boss that spawns when that zone is active for the week. These are group encounters — you will want at least a full party, and for Heroic kills, a raid group is strongly recommended.
Nexus-Captain Leth'ir (Naigtal)
An ethereal commander who uses void-based abilities. Key mechanics include void zones that expand across the arena, targeted beam attacks that require spreading, and a phase transition where Leth'ir teleports and summons add waves. The fight rewards awareness and positioning — if you stand in bad, you die. Tank swap mechanics are present but forgiving.
Imperator Pertinax (Val)
A military commander with formation-based mechanics. Pertinax summons soldier adds that form shield walls, requiring the raid to break through specific points in the formation. He also uses a charging attack with a clear telegraph that must be dodged. The fight is more structured than Leth'ir — less chaos, more execution.
Both bosses drop gear appropriate to their difficulty tier. On Normal, it is standard world boss loot. On Heroic, the drops are significantly better and contribute to weekly quest objectives. Your first kill of either boss on Normal unlocks Heroic World Tier for your character, so prioritize getting that initial kill done early in the week.
Heroic World Tier Deep Dive
Heroic World Tier is the real endgame of Invasion Points, and it deserves a closer look because the mechanics are layered enough to catch unprepared players off guard.
Creature Affixes
Every enemy in Heroic has a chance to carry one or more affixes that modify their behavior. There are over 30 in the pool, including:
- Arcane Sacrifice — Enemy explodes on death, dealing AoE damage
- Heavy Wounds — Attacks apply a healing reduction debuff
- Shadow Strikes — Melee attacks deal bonus shadow damage
- Glacial Spike — Fires a targeted frost projectile that must be dodged
- Slumber Spores — AoE sleep effect around the enemy
You cannot predict which affixes a given pack will have, so stay alert and be ready to adjust your pull strategy on the fly.
Elite Overseers
These are named elite enemies that patrol the zone on set routes. In Naigtal, you will encounter Warp Riders — fast-moving ethereals that apply a Stalked debuff, alerting nearby packs to your presence. In Val, the Blackstar Legion patrols include named elites like Guardian Halazir, Renegade Kulivero, Spellslinger Rem'lazar, and Techno-Medic Alazj, each with unique abilities. Getting spotted applies the Hunted status, which draws additional enemies toward you.
The smart play is to learn the patrol routes and time your pulls around them. Pulling a pack while an Overseer is nearby is a fast way to wipe.
All Rewards: Gear, Mounts & Cosmetics
Invasion Points are generous with rewards if you know what to farm. Here is the full breakdown:
Myth Gear Quest (Heroic World Tier)
The NPC Decimus offers a quest that requires collecting 4 Void Commander's Emblems from Heroic World Tier boss kills across four weeks (one per week). Completing this quest grants a choice of Myth 1/6 pieces — cloaks, belts, or bracers. This is one of the most accessible paths to Myth-track gear outside of raiding.
Mounts (3 unique)
Three meta-achievement chains, each requiring 6 associated achievements to complete:
- A Trip Around the Stars (Val-focused achievements) — Rewards the Voidmancer's Starcarver mount
- A Trip Through the Stars (Naigtal-focused achievements) — Rewards the Netherforged Nullframe mount
- Heroic Showdowns (Heroic-focused achievements) — Rewards the Tortured Gorger mount
General Rewards
- World boss gear (scales with difficulty tier)
- Heroic World Tier drops (higher ilvl)
- Quest progression items and currency
- Cosmetics and collectibles from zone events

Optimal Farming Route
The most efficient way to farm Invasion Points each week follows a specific sequence. Here is the route that maximizes rewards per time spent:
- Step 1: Check the active zone. Open the Voidstorm portal and see whether Naigtal or Val is up this week. Adjust your expectations accordingly — Naigtal is more AoE-friendly, Val is more pull-by-pull.
- Step 2: Group up for the world boss. This should always be your first objective. Use Group Finder to join or create a boss kill group. The kill is quick with a decent group and unlocks Heroic access if you have not done it yet.
- Step 3: Kill the world boss. Loot your gear, check for upgrades.
- Step 4: Exit and re-enter on Heroic. If your gear is at 274+ and you want the better rewards, switch to Heroic World Tier before continuing.
- Step 5: Pick up the Decimus quest. If the Myth gear weekly is available, grab it. You need Heroic boss kills for this one.
- Step 6: Clear remaining objectives. World quests, rares, zone events — complete whatever is up. Prioritize rares that drop mounts or achievement credit if you are working on the meta-chains.
This sequence ensures you get the world boss done while groups are available (early in the week) and then moves into the more solo-friendly content afterward.
Naigtal Zone Strategy
Naigtal is the trickier of the two zones because of its tight terrain and densely-packed enemies. Here are the key things to know:
- Watch for chain pulls. The fungal corridors are narrow, and enemy packs are close together. One bad pull can cascade into three or four packs if you are not careful with positioning.
- AoE specs thrive here. If your class has strong AoE, Naigtal is your playground. The tightly-grouped packs melt to cleave and burst AoE.
- Warp Rider patrols are the biggest threat on Heroic. These fast-moving ethereals apply Stalked, which alerts nearby packs. Learn their routes and time your pulls to avoid them.
- Nexus-Captain Leth'ir tips: Stay out of expanding void zones, spread for the beam attack, and be ready for add waves during the phase transition. Save defensive cooldowns for the transition — that is when the damage spikes hardest.
If you are undergeared for Heroic Naigtal, start with Val when it rotates in — the open terrain and patrol-based enemies are more forgiving for lower gear levels.
Val Zone Strategy
Val is more methodical than Naigtal. The open terrain gives you more room to maneuver, but the patrol-heavy enemy layout demands awareness of your surroundings.
- Learn patrol routes before pulling. Blackstar Legion patrols walk fixed paths. Watch for a few seconds before engaging a pack to make sure no patrol is about to walk through your fight.
- Pull to safe spots. Since the terrain is open, you can often pull enemies backward to a cleared area rather than fighting where you find them. This prevents patrol overlaps.
- Named Overseers are mini-bosses. Guardian Halazir, Renegade Kulivero, Spellslinger Rem'lazar, and Techno-Medic Alazj each have unique abilities. Do not treat them like regular mobs — they hit hard and have mechanics that punish face-tanking.
- Imperator Pertinax tips: Break the shield wall formations by targeting the marked weak point. Dodge the charging attack (it has a clear ground indicator). The fight is very predictable once you learn the pattern.
Achievements & Mount Guide
There are three meta-achievement chains tied to Invasion Points, each granting a unique mount. Here is what you need to complete for each one:
A Trip Around the Stars (Val) — Voidmancer's Starcarver
Requires completing 6 Val-specific achievements. These include killing the world boss, completing all Val world quests, defeating all named elites, and finishing zone-specific events. Since Val only rotates in every other week, plan to spend several lockouts working through the list.
A Trip Through the Stars (Naigtal) — Netherforged Nullframe
Same structure as the Val meta, but for Naigtal-specific content. Kill Leth'ir, complete all world quests, defeat all Naigtal rares and named enemies, and finish zone events. Again, the weekly rotation means this takes time.
Heroic Showdowns — Tortured Gorger
This one focuses specifically on Heroic World Tier content across both zones. You need to complete objectives on Heroic difficulty, defeat Heroic versions of both world bosses, and survive encounters with Elite Overseers. This is the hardest of the three metas because it requires consistent Heroic farming at ilvl 274+.
All three mounts are account-wide once earned. If you are a collector, start working on these early — the weekly rotation means each meta takes a minimum of several weeks to complete.
Group vs Solo: What Works Best?
Invasion Points are designed to be played in a group, but a significant amount of content is soloable depending on your class and gear level.
Soloable (Normal): World quests, most rare enemies, zone events. If you are at or above the recommended ilvl of 217, Normal mode is comfortable for solo play. Tank and healer specs with strong self-sustain can solo almost everything on Normal.
Group Recommended (Normal): World bosses. You technically can solo them at extreme gear levels, but it is impractical for most players. Use Group Finder — there are always groups forming, especially early in the week.
Group Required (Heroic): Most Heroic content is designed for groups of 3-5 players. The affix system and Elite Overseers make solo play extremely punishing at 274 ilvl. Well-geared DPS specs (290+) can solo some Heroic content, but it is slow and risky. World bosses on Heroic absolutely require a raid group.
For the best experience, find a regular group or guild that runs Invasion Points together each week. The content is much more enjoyable and efficient with coordinated players. If you need a group that matches your schedule, check out our community guides for tips on finding the right guild.
Common Mistakes & Pro Tips
- Do not skip the world boss on reset day. Groups are most available early in the week. By Thursday, finding a group gets significantly harder.
- Do not enter Heroic undergeared. The 274 ilvl recommendation is not a suggestion — Heroic mobs will shred you below that threshold. Farm Normal and other content until you hit the mark.
- Track which zone is active. Since Naigtal and Val rotate weekly, keep a mental note of the schedule so you can plan which achievements and quests to prioritize.
- Use consumables on Heroic. Flasks, food, potions, augment runes — treat Heroic Invasion Points like you would a Mythic+ key. The difficulty warrants it.
- Complete the Decimus quest every week it is available. Four weeks of Heroic boss kills for a Myth 1/6 piece is an excellent deal. Do not let weeks slip by.
- Save major cooldowns for Elite Overseers. These are mini-boss tier enemies that can easily kill you if you blow your cooldowns on the pack before the Overseer shows up.
- Farm achievements across both zone rotations. Some achievements are zone-specific. Keep a checklist so you do not waste a lockout wondering what you still need from Naigtal versus Val.
