Demon Hunter Leveling in Midnight at a Glance
Current as of 12 October 2026 (patch 12.1). Patch 12.1.5 arrives on 13 October, and that is when we next go through the Devourer notes.
Demon Hunter is a hero class, so a new character does not start at level 1: Icy Veins’ Midnight leveling guide covers levels 8 to 90. Midnight also added a third specialization, Devourer, a mid-range caster that uses void spells. That changes the old question of Havoc or Vengeance. This page covers all three specs with their hero trees, the abilities you gain on the way and the rotations at level 80.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Level cap | 90 (Midnight) |
| Starting level | 8 (the class leveling range runs from 8 to 90) |
| Midnight story starts at | Level 78 |
| Best spec for leveling | No wrong choice. Icy Veins (12.1 review of 10 August 2026) says all three level well with little downtime between pulls |
| Hero talents at level 71 | Havoc: Aldrachi Reaver or Fel-Scarred. Vengeance: Aldrachi Reaver or Annihilator. Devourer: Void-Scarred or Annihilator |
| Hero trees the leveling builds use | Fel-Scarred (Havoc), Annihilator (Vengeance), Void-Scarred (Devourer) |
| Heirloom stat | Haste |
If you remember the advice that Havoc clearly beats Vengeance, it is out of date: Icy Veins now sees no wrong choice among the three specs, so the next section compares them by playstyle.
Havoc, Vengeance or Devourer: Which Spec to Level
All three specs pull large groups and recover health quickly, so choose by playstyle. These notes follow Icy Veins’ Demon Hunter pages for 12.1.
| Spec | How it levels | Best for | Hero tree the build uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Havoc | Melee DPS that pulls big groups on roughly 20-second intervals and kills them with Eye Beam and Blade Dance. Shattered Souls heals you for every kill, and from level 30 Soul Rending gives Leech on every attack, stronger in Metamorphosis | Fast questing and big open-world pulls | Fel-Scarred |
| Vengeance | Tank with excellent mobility and self-sustain from Soul Fragments, available from level 10 with Fracture. A little slower at clearing groups than the other two, but far less risky | Elites and dangerous monsters solo, and dungeon queues, which are short for a tank | Annihilator |
| Devourer | Mid-range caster. Void Ray deals very high AoE damage to groups and the spec jumps between enemies easily. Void Metamorphosis needs a ramp-up but deals exceptional damage through Collapsing Star. Shattered Souls and Soul Rending keep you healthy | Big pulls from a distance | Void-Scarred |
| If you want | Level this spec | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fast open-world questing in melee | Havoc | Takes more damage in a bad pull than Vengeance does |
| The same speed from range | Devourer | New spec, so its leveling advice has had the fewest revisions |
| The safest solo run and the shortest dungeon queues | Vengeance | Clears groups a little slower than the other two |
Because Devourer is new in Midnight, check its Icy Veins page again after patch 12.1.5 before you commit.
Demon Hunter Abilities by Level
Because you start at level 8, you already have the basics. These are the shared abilities from the Icy Veins class page; each spec adds its own through talents.
| Level | Ability | What it does for leveling |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Fel Rush, Demon’s Bite, Chaos Strike, Recuperate | Your first attack and gap closer; Recuperate is a channeled heal for out of combat |
| Start | Spectral Sight, Shattered Souls | See enemies through walls; defeating an enemy spawns a soul that heals you |
| 9 | Torment | Taunts a target and gives you the highest threat |
| 11 | Immolation Aura | Fire damage around you for 6 seconds |
| 12 | Throw Glaive | Pulls distant enemies; Vengeance also generates extra threat with it |
| 18 | Immolation Aura rank 2 | Adds initial damage on cast |
| 20 | Metamorphosis | Learned through a quest in the starting area. Havoc stuns nearby enemies and empowers itself for 20 seconds; Vengeance gains Health and Armor for 15 seconds; Devourer gets Void Metamorphosis, activated after gathering Souls and fed by Fury |
| 20 | Disrupt | The interrupt, 15-second cooldown |
| 49 | Chaos Brand | Targets you damage take 3% more magic damage from all sources, which makes the class popular in groups |
Vengeance gets its Soul Fragment generator, Fracture, at level 10, so it has sustain from the first levels as a tank.
Hero Talents and Talent Order for Levels 10-90
The point schedule from level 10 to 90, including the level-71 start of hero talents, does not depend on the class; the Rogue leveling guide lays it out. For a Demon Hunter the choice is between these trees, and Vengeance and Devourer share Annihilator:
| Spec | Hero tree in the leveling build | Other option | Note from the leveling page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Havoc | Fel-Scarred | Aldrachi Reaver | Demonsurge empowers Metamorphosis |
| Vengeance | Annihilator | Aldrachi Reaver | Tree shared with Devourer |
| Devourer | Void-Scarred | Annihilator | Voidsurge empowers Void Metamorphosis |
Early and milestone picks from the Icy Veins leveling order for 12.1 (Havoc and Devourer):
| Level | Havoc | Devourer |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Felblade | Vengeful Retreat |
| 11 | Eye Beam | Void Ray |
| 12 | Unrestrained Fury | Unrestrained Fury |
| 15 | First Blood | Soul Immolation |
| 16 | Chaos Nova | Void Nova |
| 21 | Demon Hide | Void Metamorphosis |
| 71 | Fel-Scarred: Blind Focus | Void-Scarred: Focused Hatred |
| 80 | Untethered Fury | Monster Rising |
| 89 | Monster Rising | Untethered Fury |
Both builds are made for leveling, so respec at 90. The point-by-point lists are on the Icy Veins pages for Havoc, Vengeance and Devourer.
Rotation From Level 80
The rotation grows with every talent point below level 80, so follow the order above. At 80 these are the priorities Icy Veins gives for 12.1.
Havoc
- Use The Hunt as often as possible, especially on tough enemies, and Felblade to engage and to generate Fury.
- While in Metamorphosis, cast Consuming Fire or Abyssal Gaze.
- Use Eye Beam, Blade Dance (Death Sweep in Metamorphosis) and Immolation Aura on cooldown.
- Use Metamorphosis when Eye Beam and Blade Dance are on cooldown, especially against tough enemies.
- Spend Fury on Chaos Strike (Annihilation in Metamorphosis) and use Throw Glaive when you need to pull from range.
Vengeance
- Use Metamorphosis, Sigil of Spite, Soul Carver, Fiery Brand, Fel Devastation, Sigil of Flame and Immolation Aura.
- Use Spirit Bomb with 5 Soul Fragments, and Soul Cleave with 2 or more.
- Use Felblade to build Fury, and Fracture to build both Fury and Soul Fragments.
Devourer
- Cast Collapsing Star when available and The Hunt on cooldown.
- Use Voidblade to generate Fury and Hungering Slash when available.
- Cast Vengeful Retreat when it is buffed by Voidstep, and Void Ray whenever you have enough Fury.
- Use Void Metamorphosis as often as you have the Soul Fragments for it.
- Generate Fury and Soul Fragments with Soul Immolation and Consume, and use Reap to collect Soul Fragments you cannot reach.
Questing, Dungeons and Movement for a Demon Hunter
Vengeance gets the quickest dungeon queues because it tanks, and Icy Veins says you can speedrun dungeons for XP by gathering large packs and clearing in a handful of pulls. Havoc and Devourer queue as DPS, so quest with them and take dungeons when a group is available. Chaos Brand (level 49) makes any Demon Hunter welcome in a dungeon group.
The Midnight campaign starts at level 78 for every class. Its zone order, the level-up dungeons and the XP needed per level are in our Rogue leveling guide, which also has the 4 to 5 hour alt route; a Demon Hunter can follow it unchanged.
For movement Havoc has Fel Rush and Vengeful Retreat, and Devourer has Shift, Vengeful Retreat and Voidblade, so both can jump between targets quickly.
Survival Tools, Gear and Heirlooms
- Blur. A strong defensive with a long duration and a short cooldown. Havoc has two charges, so use it freely.
- Chaos Nova. An emergency AoE stun if a pull goes wrong.
- Fel Rush and Vengeful Retreat (Devourer also has Shift, a teleport) get you out of a bad spot.
- Soul Fragments. For Devourer each Soul Fragment you consume heals 1% of your maximum health, so pull big and let the fragments heal you.
- Recuperate. Channel it between pulls to heal out of combat.
- Heirlooms. Pick pieces with as much Haste as possible. Haste speeds up the whole rotation and helps you tag mobs a split second earlier, which can decide who gets credit.
Item level decides every slot except rings and necklaces, where Icy Veins accepts a slightly lower item level if the piece has two secondary stats instead of one.
Demon Hunter Leveling FAQ
What is the best Demon Hunter spec for leveling in Midnight?
Icy Veins says there is no wrong choice among Havoc, Vengeance and Devourer. Vengeance is safest and queues fastest for dungeons.
What is Devourer?
A third Demon Hunter spec added in Midnight: a mid-range caster built around Void Ray and Void Metamorphosis.
Which hero talents does each spec use?
Havoc: Aldrachi Reaver or Fel-Scarred. Vengeance: Aldrachi Reaver or Annihilator. Devourer: Void-Scarred or Annihilator. Icy Veins’ leveling builds use Fel-Scarred, Annihilator and Void-Scarred.
At what level does a new Demon Hunter start?
Level 8, after the starting zone.
When do hero talents start?
At level 71. The rest of the point schedule is the same for every class; see our Rogue leveling guide.
Can I skip the leveling?
Only by paying for it. The Midnight leveling boost runs the 1 to 90 range for you, and a Demon Hunter that arrives at 90 can read the Midnight beginner guide to see what to do first.
