Death Knight Leveling in Midnight at a Glance
Reviewed on 12 October 2026 for patch 12.1, with another pass planned once patch 12.1.5 is live on 13 October.
Death Knight is a hero class, so a new character starts above level 1: at level 8, or at level 10 for allied races such as Dark Iron Dwarf, Highmountain Tauren or Vulpera, who also pick their specialization immediately. Midnight raised the level cap to 90. This page covers the three specs with their hero trees, the first abilities and runeforge choices, and the rotations at level 80.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Level cap | 90 (Midnight) |
| Level a Death Knight starts at | 8 (10 for allied races, with an instant spec choice) |
| Midnight story starts at | Level 78 |
| Spec Icy Veins favors for solo leveling | Blood: it pulls many mobs and survives long fights (Icy Veins, 12.1 review of 10 August 2026). Frost and Unholy are the two DPS specs |
| Hero trees the leveling builds use | Blood: Deathbringer. Frost: Rider of the Apocalypse. Unholy: Rider of the Apocalypse |
| Heirloom stat | No strong preference; take Haste if in doubt |
| Weapon runeforge | Rune of the Fallen Crusader; Rune of Unending Thirst as an alternative or in the off hand |
Older advice that Frost is the best leveling build no longer holds for solo play: Icy Veins now leans to Blood, and the next section compares all three specs.
Blood, Frost or Unholy: Which Spec to Level
All three Death Knight specs level well, and the class gets a strong self-heal in Midnight: every spec has Death Strike, and the DPS specs can increase its healing by 60%. Icy Veins says that is enough to outmatch any outdoor content. The spec descriptions below follow the Icy Veins leveling pages for 12.1.
| Spec | How it levels | Best for | Leveling hero tree |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blood (tank) | Pulls whole zones and sustains through Blood Plague and Death Strike. Tank queues in the group finder are instantaneous | Solo players, big pulls and dungeon spamming | Deathbringer |
| Unholy (DPS) | All about setup: pull a pack, then summon lesser ghouls with Putrefy and burst everything. Spreads diseases, cleaves with Scourge Strike and Epidemic. Strong self-sustain from Dark Succor and Death Strike | Large, frequent pulls while cooldowns are up | Rider of the Apocalypse |
| Frost (DPS) | The more up-front of the two DPS specs. Gathers a pack and bursts it down with sweeping attacks such as Frostscythe. Good self-sustain through Dark Succor | Burst on groups | Rider of the Apocalypse |
If you want one answer, level Blood. Unholy is described as a fast leveler and Frost as a good one. Whatever you pick, Icy Veins recommends choosing a favorite time period through Chromie Time: if you pick Classic, Burning Crusade, Wrath or Cataclysm, many quests are inside the dungeons themselves, so you can earn quest and dungeon XP together.
Starting Abilities and Runeforge Choice
You begin with three damage abilities and use them until you pick a specialization at level 10.
| Level | Ability | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Rune Strike | Main Rune spender; generates 10 Runic Power |
| Start | Death and Decay | A zone on the ground that deals light damage; costs a Rune and generates 10 Runic Power |
| Start | Death Coil | Spends 30 Runic Power for shadow damage |
| Start | Death Grip | Pulls an enemy to you from range |
| 9 | Lichborne and Death’s Advance | A minor defensive and a large movement speed bonus; you keep both to level 90 |
| 11 | Spec ability | Blood: Heart Strike (replaces Rune Strike, hits a second enemy). Frost: Frost Strike (replaces Death Coil as your spender). Unholy: Outbreak and Festering Strike |
| 13 | Scourge Strike (Unholy) | Bursts the Lesser Ghoul stacks from Festering Strike to summon Lesser Ghouls |
Unholy players can spend the first talent point on Death Strike, or go down the Raise Dead route to pick up Cleaving Strikes for more cleave.
Runeforge
Every time you get a new weapon, apply Rune of the Fallen Crusader. It has a high chance to give 15% bonus Strength, heals you for 6% of your maximum health each time it triggers, and costs nothing. Icy Veins calls it much stronger than any other weapon enchant in the game. Rune of Unending Thirst heals you and gives a speed boost whenever you kill an enemy. If you dual wield, put Unending Thirst on the off hand.
A trick that saves time: using Death Gate a second time while inside Acherus teleports you to the graveyard or instance portal nearest to where you first used it. Go and runeforge a new weapon right away instead of waiting.
Hero Talents and Talent Order for Levels 10-90
How talent points arrive from level 10 to 90 is covered once, for all classes, in our Rogue leveling guide. The Death Knight detail is the tree pairing: each spec chooses between two hero trees, and every tree belongs to two specs.
| Spec | Hero tree in the leveling build | Other option |
|---|---|---|
| Blood | Deathbringer | San’layn |
| Frost | Rider of the Apocalypse | Deathbringer |
| Unholy | Rider of the Apocalypse | San’layn |
Hero picks as they appear in the Icy Veins leveling order for 12.1:
| Level | Blood (Deathbringer) | Frost and Unholy (Rider of the Apocalypse) |
|---|---|---|
| 71 | Wave of Souls | On a Paler Horse |
| 72 | Soul Rupture | Whitemane’s Famine |
| 73 | Swift and Painful | Hungering Thirst |
| 74 | Exterminate | Apocalypse Now |
| 80 | Deathly Blows | Unholy Armaments |
| 83 | Echoing Fury | Pact of the Apocalypse |
| 86 | Rune Carved Plates | Trollbane’s Icy Fury |
| 89 | Death’s Messenger | Mawsworn Menace |
On a Paler Horse at level 71 makes Frost and Unholy among the most mobile leveling specs. Complete lists with every class and spec pick, meant for leveling rather than the endgame, are on the Icy Veins pages for Blood, Frost and Unholy.
Rotation From Level 80
Under level 80 the rotation is built up point by point; from 80 it settles into the lists below, which Icy Veins gives for 12.1.
Blood
- Place Death and Decay where you plan to fight and refresh it when its buff fades. Cleaving Strikes makes the buff last four seconds longer than the visual.
- Use Death Strike when your health is low or you have more than 75 Runic Power.
- Use Blood Boil if any nearby enemy lacks Blood Plague, or when you are close to two charges.
- Cast Reaper’s Mark on a nearby enemy when available, spend Exterminate charges with Marrowrend, and use Dancing Rune Weapon on cooldown.
- Refresh Bone Shield with Marrowrend before it expires or at 6 stacks or fewer. Use Heart Strike with 2 or more Runes, and Blood Boil otherwise.
Unholy
- Use Outbreak to put Virulent Plague on all targets and Dread Plague on the main target.
- Use Army of the Dead on difficult mobs, Dark Transformation off cooldown (save it for big packs or hard enemies) and Soul Reaper on a free proc or below 35% health.
- Use Putrefy as much as possible, and Festering Strike when you have no Lesser Ghoul stacks.
- Use Scourge Strike with at least one Lesser Ghoul stack.
- Spend Runic Power on Death Coil for one to three targets and Epidemic for four or more, and use Sudden Doom procs quickly.
Frost
- Open a pack with Pillar of Frost, and pair it with Frostwyrm’s Fury on big packs, elites or bosses.
- Use Empower Rune Weapon to generate Runic Power and Killing Machine procs, and Raise Dead off cooldown.
- Use Obliterate as the main Rune spender, with Frostscythe instead of it against three or more enemies.
- Use Howling Blast only to spend Rime procs.
- Spend Runic Power on Frost Strike for one target, or Glacial Advance for two or more, and use Death Strike to heal.
Questing, Dungeons and a Death Knight Checklist
Blood is the choice for dungeon spamming, since tank queues are instantaneous and it gathers whole packs. The DPS specs queue slower; quest with them and use dungeons when a group is ready. Icy Veins calls Dark Succor “incredible for leveling” on both DPS pages: after each kill your next Death Strike is free and heals for 10% more (Unholy page), so chain pulling stays safe.
The Midnight campaign, with its zones, dungeons and XP table, does not change by class, so it is written down once in our Rogue leveling guide. This checklist is only what changes for a Death Knight along the way.
| When | Death Knight task |
|---|---|
| Level 8 or 10 (allied races) | Start in Acherus; allied races choose a specialization at once |
| Every new weapon | Runeforge it right away; the Death Gate trick above gets you back to Acherus quickly |
| Level 71 | Pick the hero tree: Deathbringer for Blood, Rider of the Apocalypse for Frost and Unholy in the leveling builds |
| Level 78 | The Midnight campaign opens |
| Level 80 | Switch to the fixed rotations above |
| Level 90 | Respec to an endgame build |
Anti-Magic Shell absorbs magic damage and generates Runic Power while it does, so use it whenever there is magic damage around. Lichborne gives a good chunk of Leech and works as a defensive while you chain-pull.
Gear and Heirlooms
- Heirlooms. The right stat depends mostly on the maximum level you can upgrade them to. None of the three specs loves or hates a particular stat; if in doubt, pick Haste, which shortens the global cooldown and makes the class feel faster.
- Gear. The highest item level wins, with Icy Veins’ one exception for rings and necklaces: a slightly lower piece is fine when it has two secondary stats rather than one.
- Weapons. Runeforge each new weapon at once (see above).
- Self-healing. Death Strike is available to every spec; the DPS specs can raise its healing by 60%.
