Warlock Leveling in Midnight at a Glance
Status on 12 October 2026: written for patch 12.1. Patch 12.1.5 arrives on 13 October, after which we recheck the pet and talent notes.
Warlock has a reputation as one of the safest and quickest classes to level. DoTs tag several mobs at once, a pet takes most of the damage, and the class has fear, drain life and a healthstone to recover between pulls. With the cap at 90, this page covers the Warlock side of the trip: which spec to level, which pet to summon at which level, and which hero tree each spec takes at 71.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Level cap | 90 (Midnight) |
| Midnight story starts at | Level 78 |
| Best spec for leveling (Icy Veins, 12.1) | Affliction first; Demonology is as quick for smaller pulls; Destruction suits one or two mobs at a time |
| Pet | Voidwalker when leveling alone (level 10), Felhunter in groups and dungeons (level 23), Felguard for Demonology |
| Hero talents | Level 71; Icy Veins’ leveling builds use Soul Harvester (Affliction), Diabolist (Demonology) and Hellcaller (Destruction) |
| Self-heal tools | Create Healthstone (7) and Drain Life (9) |
Affliction remains the first choice, and its leveling build in 12.1 takes the Soul Harvester hero tree, not Hellcaller. The table in the next section shows both options for each spec.
Affliction, Demonology or Destruction
Pick by how you pull. All three specs level, but they reward different habits. The table follows Icy Veins’ Warlock pages, reviewed for 12.1 on 10 August 2026.
| Spec | How it levels | Best for | Pet | Hero tree in the leveling build |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Affliction | Spread Agony or Corruption on every mob while moving to the next, then finish the group with AoE. Strong in groups | Large pulls, questing and dungeons | Voidwalker alone; Felhunter in groups | Soul Harvester |
| Demonology | Felguard does the heavy lifting; high AoE burst from demons and guardians, low threat from your own spells | Pulls of two to four mobs, solo rares | Felguard | Diabolist |
| Destruction | Burst single targets with Shadowburn and Chaos Bolt and move on. AoE is weak and generates high threat | One or two mobs at a time | Voidwalker | Hellcaller |
Two practical points from the same guides. First, Destruction has the most trouble on elites and rares, because the Voidwalker does not hold aggro well against its burst, so expect a slow fight with Drain Life or a pulled-off threat. Second, Affliction is called the most versatile spec, especially in group play, which is why it comes first in the ranking.
Hero trees decide who gets what. Each Warlock spec can choose between two trees, and in the leveling builds Hellcaller goes to Destruction because the Wither ability helps that spec tag mobs.
| Spec | Tree in the Icy Veins leveling build | The other tree |
|---|---|---|
| Affliction | Soul Harvester | Hellcaller |
| Demonology | Diabolist | Soul Harvester |
| Destruction | Hellcaller | Diabolist |
Warlock Pets by Level
You get a new demon every few levels, and the right one depends on how many people are in your group. Icy Veins is blunt about the Imp: it is your first demon and not useful for leveling, but you have no choice before level 10.
| Level | Pet | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Imp | Only choice until level 10; better suited to raid use than to leveling |
| 10 | Voidwalker | The main solo pet. It absorbs hits and keeps casting pushback off you, which speeds up leveling |
| 19 | Sayaad | A melee option, mostly for looks and dungeons |
| 23 | Felhunter | The only pet with an interrupt; use it in groups and dungeons against casters |
| Demonology | Felguard | Default for Demonology: crowd control, damage, cleave and tanking in one pet |
Affliction keeps Voidwalker out for elites and rares: the pet cannot out-threat heavy shard spenders, so sustain it while you whittle the target down. Subjugate Demon (level 21) lets you take control of a stronger demon, and Command Demons (level 29) activates the special abilities of your pets.
Warlock Spells by Level
At level 1 you cast only Shadow Bolt. This is what you learn over the first 47 levels, with the effect that matters for leveling.
| Level | Spell | Use while leveling |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Corruption | Two-second cast at first; tags extra mobs |
| 4 | Unending Resolve | Main damage reduction cooldown |
| 5 | Fear | At low levels a better way to avoid damage than Unending Resolve |
| 6 | Curse of Weakness | Reduces auto-attack damage taken by you or your pet |
| 7 | Create Healthstone | Less downtime between fights |
| 9 | Drain Life | Extra self-sustain |
| 14 | Soulstone | Resurrect an ally or yourself in combat |
| 33 | Ritual of Summoning | Summon party members |
| 47 | Create Soulwell | Shares Healthstones with the group |
Do not skip the curses. Icy Veins’ Affliction and Demonology pages both list them as a tip because slowing or weakening a target cuts the damage you and your pet take, which allows bigger pulls.
Hero Talents and Talent Order for Levels 10-90
Every class earns points on one schedule, which our Rogue leveling guide describes. What follows are only the Warlock orders from the Icy Veins leveling pages.
Affliction with Soul Harvester
The early Affliction order starts with Fel Domination at level 10, Agony at 11, Burning Rush at 12, Unstable Affliction at 13, Seed of Corruption at 15 and Haunt at 17, then Shared Agony at 21. In the same order the hero picks run from Demoniac’s Fervor at 71 to Wicked Reaping at 80, then Manifested Avarice at 83, Shared Vessel at 86 and Eternal Hunger at 89.
Demonology with Diabolist
The Diabolist order starts with Secrets of the Coven at 71, then Touch of Rancora, Infernal Machine, Abyssal Dominion, Ruination, Cloven Souls, Soul-Etched Circles, Flames of Xoroth and Infernal Vitality, with Gloom of Nathreza at 80, Diabolic Oculi at 83, Looks That Kill at 86 and Mind’s Eyes at 89.
Both builds are made for leveling, so respec to an endgame build once you reach 90. The point-by-point lists with all class and spec picks are in the talent calculators on Icy Veins’ Affliction, Demonology and Destruction pages.
Rotation From Level 80
Below 80 the rotation changes with each talent, so use the point-by-level order. At level 80 these are the priorities Icy Veins gives for 12.1.
Affliction
- Keep Agony on the target, and put it on new mobs before Corruption.
- Cast Haunt on the main target.
- Spend shards on Unstable Affliction against one or two targets. Casting it on a dying enemy returns a shard.
- Cast Dark Harvest once every target you are fighting has at least one DoT.
- Use Corruption to tag and soften groups when a few Shadow Bolts would not kill them faster.
- Cast Summon Darkglare after you have applied as many DoTs as possible, and Seed of Corruption against three or more targets.
Demonology
- Cast Call Dreadstalkers on cooldown, whatever the number of targets.
- Cast Summon Demonic Tyrant when you have 5 shards and Dreadstalkers are active.
- Use Hand of Gul’dan as the first shard spender, the only one without a cooldown, at 5 shards.
- Cast Demonbolt on every Demonic Core proc, and Implosion when at least 6 imps are active.
For Destruction, follow the leveling page on Icy Veins, which updates the priority list with a level slider.
Big Pulls, Gear and Consumables
A Warlock needs no separate route from level 78: the zones, the dungeons and the XP table are in our Rogue leveling guide, along with the 4 to 5 hour alt route.
Wowhead also describes a one-pull strategy at Shadowguard Point, one of the Voidstorm Delves: one huge pull, AoE it down, reset and repeat, available every third day. We think Seed of Corruption (three or more targets) and Implosion (six or more imps) suit that kind of pull, but that is our reading, not a source claim.
Gear
Wear the highest item level piece. If item levels are equal, take the better stats for your spec, and do not replace an heirloom. Icy Veins’ heirloom stat order is Intellect, then Haste, then Critical Strike, because haste lets you cast and tag faster.
Consumables and enchants
The War Within enchants still work during leveling: Scout’s March on boots, Chant of Burrowing Rapidity on the cloak and Chant of Armored Speed on bracers. For travel, Icy Veins lists Goblin Glider Kit, Gunshoes or Potion of the Reborn Cheetah, Light-Step Hoofplates, Thunderous Drums, Draught of Silent Footfalls, and Fried Bonefish or Bear Tartare. You level each character once, so a small stack is enough. Use combat potions before they stop mattering at the cap.
Warlock Leveling FAQ
What is the best Warlock spec for leveling in Midnight?
Icy Veins names Affliction the preferred choice, with Demonology about as quick for smaller pulls. Destruction works best for one or two mobs at a time.
Which pet should I use?
Voidwalker (level 10) when leveling alone, Felhunter (level 23) in groups for the interrupt, and Felguard for Demonology.
When do Warlock hero talents start?
At level 71. The points after that follow the shared schedule in our Rogue leveling guide.
Can Affliction still use Hellcaller?
Yes, the tree is open to Affliction and Destruction, but Icy Veins’ leveling build for Affliction uses Soul Harvester and gives Hellcaller to Destruction.
How long does it take to get to level 90?
Wowhead timed an optimized alt route at 4 to 5 hours in March 2026, before patch 12.1. The first character’s campaign takes about 8 hours or more.
Can I skip leveling?
A paid Midnight leveling boost covers 1 to 90. What a fresh 90 should do first is in the Midnight beginner guide and the Season 2 preparation guide.
