Midnight Best Tank
Last checked on 12 October 2026, ahead of patch 12.1.5. The tank placements below come from Icy Veins (24 September), Method (5 October) and wow.gg (10 October).
Blood Death Knight is the top Mythic+ tank in Midnight Season 2. It holds S tier on both Icy Veins and Method and deals more damage than any other tank in wow.gg’s data. Guardian Druid is the next most consistent pick (A+ on Icy Veins, A on Method). Every tank can finish keys: Icy Veins says all six specs can complete about 99% of keys, and the difference only shows at the highest levels. Protection Paladin sits in the middle of the current lists (A on Icy Veins, B on Method), so it is no longer the default recommendation.

Sources: Icy Veins Mythic+ tank list, Method Mythic+ tier list (tanks and healers share one list), wow.gg Mythic+ tank ranks (week 8, updated 10 October).
Icy Veins’ tank list was last updated on 24 September, before the 3 October class changes. The gap between Blood and the rest was small even then: on 24 August Icy Veins said Guardian Druid was one small buff away from S tier. Brewmaster has the lowest average damage on wow.gg but stays A+ on Icy Veins, and Icy Veins named Blood, Guardian and Brewmaster as the best choices for the very highest keys on 1 September.
Protection Paladin
Protection Paladin is A on Icy Veins, B on Method, and sits level with Vengeance on wow.gg (195K, highest key +22). Icy Veins’ spec guide (21 September) describes smooth damage intake from blocking and strong active mitigation, “no other tank class has quite the array of tricks” a Paladin does, and damage that is lower than other tanks but more than enough to hold threat. You can switch talents between single-target for raid and AoE for Mythic+ with little change in playstyle. Avenging Wrath is available often, and using Holy Power well gives more cooldown availability.
The Season 2 set makes Consecration larger and adds a crit chance bonus against enemies standing in it (2-set), then makes Judgment and Blessed Hammer targets take extra Holy damage (4-set). Blessing of Protection is still the Paladin’s best-known rescue tool for the group.
Vengeance Demon Hunter
Vengeance Demon Hunter is A on both grading lists and received buffs in the first half of the season (Icy Veins, 1 September). Its spec guide (21 September) calls Demon Hunters “the kings of mobility” and lists strong burst AoE, plus dungeon utility from Sigil of Silence and Chaos Nova. Defensively it combines constant healing and damage mitigation with low-cost, low-uptime active mitigation, and it handles magic damage extremely well. Damage depends on your Hero Talent: Annihilator gives a strong cooldown profile, and Aldrachi Reaver gives exceptional funnel damage through Wounded Quarry. To reach its full damage you need to use most defensive cooldowns offensively.
The Season 2 set extends Sigil of Flame (2-set) and then makes Immolation Aura and Sigil of Spite hit Sigil of Flame targets much harder (4-set).
Brewmaster Monk
Brewmaster is A+ on Icy Veins and B on Method, with the lowest average damage of the six tanks on wow.gg (172K). Its defining mechanic is Stagger, which turns part of the damage you take into a damage-over-time effect that you can clear with other abilities. Icy Veins (25 August) describes it as “consistently good, seldom the best” for damage, and an incredibly mobile tank with considerable utility. It named Brewmaster one of the three best choices for the highest keys on 1 September.
The Season 2 set makes Breath of Fire ignite your next Keg Smash into an explosion (2-set), and ignited Keg Smashes leave enemies taking extra physical damage and a patch of fire (4-set).
Blood Death Knight
Blood is the top tank of the season: S on Icy Veins and Method, 234K average damage on wow.gg (34K ahead of the next tank) and a highest key of +23. Icy Veins’ spec guide says it heals a large part of the damage it takes reactively through Death Strike, has one of the strongest magic defense cooldowns in the game (Anti-Magic Shell), an uncapped cheat-death talent (Purgatory) and many short-cooldown defensive buffs. In August Icy Veins described Blood as slightly overtuned, particularly in AoE and cleave, partly because of an unintended change to the damage pulse of The Blood is Life, and expected direct changes. If you play it, expect further tuning.
The Season 2 set builds Blood Debt stacks from Death Strike into a Strength bonus on the next Marrowrend (2-set) and adds Bone Shield charges and Shadow damage (4-set).
Guardian Druid
Guardian Druid is A+ on Icy Veins, A on Method, second on wow.gg (200K, highest key +23). Icy Veins’ spec guide describes a sturdy “sponge” tank with strong passive reductions, a large health pool, extra healing from Mastery and stackable active mitigation from Ironfur. Once you have the gear it is mostly self-sufficient, and it excels against encounters where most damage is physical or melee. Its damage profile is flexible: a powerful 2 to 3 minute cooldown that works on single target and AoE, and high sustained damage. Icy Veins’ August note was that Guardian is one small buff away from S tier.
The Season 2 set gives Thrash a chance to make the next Mangle deal double damage (2-set) and makes Thrash call up thorns that hit nearby enemies and extend Incarnation (4-set).
Protection Warrior
Protection Warrior is A on Icy Veins, B on Method, and 191K on wow.gg with a highest key of +22. Icy Veins’ spec guide (4 October) says it excels in fights with a lot of physical damage or where mobility is needed, takes damage smoothly through blocking, and brings crowd control and raid buffs. Its damage comes in bursts around Avatar, with decent execute damage. The spec received buffs earlier in the season and receives more in patch 12.1.5 (see below).
The Season 2 set makes your free Revenges stronger and empowers the next Shield Slam (2-set), and makes Ravager and free Revenges cause bleeds (4-set).
Midnight Best Group Tank
For groups, the practical choice depends on the dungeon pool and the healer. Season 2 Mythic+ uses eight dungeons (see Midnight All Dungeons). A rough guide from the sources above:
| If you want | Pick | Why (source) |
|---|---|---|
| The safest top-ranked choice | Blood Death Knight | S on Icy Veins and Method, first on wow.gg, self-healing through Death Strike |
| A durable, mostly self-sufficient tank | Guardian Druid | Strong passive mitigation, Ironfur, highest keys +23 on wow.gg |
| Damage smoothing for the healer | Brewmaster Monk | Stagger turns spikes into damage over time; A+ on Icy Veins |
| Mobility and magic defense | Vengeance Demon Hunter | Best mobility of any tank; handles magic damage extremely well (Icy Veins) |
| Group rescues and flexible damage | Protection Paladin | Blessing of Protection, Avenging Wrath often available; A on Icy Veins |
| Physical damage and crowd control | Protection Warrior | Block-based smooth intake; buffed in 12.1.5 |
Icy Veins’ only caution is that the very highest keys favor Blood, Guardian and Brewmaster.
Midnight Best Solo Tank
No major source ranks tanks for solo play in Midnight, and Mythic+ tier lists do not measure it. Use the spec descriptions: a solo tank needs self-healing, mobility and the ability to keep fights short.
- Blood Death Knight: heals reactively through Death Strike and has a large defensive toolkit (Icy Veins).
- Vengeance Demon Hunter: highest mobility of any tank, with constant healing and mitigation (Icy Veins).
- Guardian Druid: mostly self-sufficient once geared, with a flexible damage profile (Icy Veins).
- Protection Warrior: block-based, smooth damage intake and decent execute damage (Icy Veins).
Damage matters in solo play more than in groups. On wow.gg, Blood deals the most damage of any tank (234K) and Brewmaster the least (172K).
Patch 12.1.5 Tank Changes
Blizzard’s 12.1.5 notes (US realms 13 October, EU realms 14 October) touch only one tank spec, Protection Warrior, with two changes (12.1.5 content update notes):
- Execute damage +30%.
- Execute and Revenge Rage cost reduced by 10 (through Practiced Strikes).
No other tank changes are listed. We will re-check this page after the patch. The Season 2 Mythic+ pool does not change.
