Midnight Best Profession
Updated 12 October 2026 for patch 12.1 (Midnight Season 2). The tier list below is Icy Veins’ gold-making list updated for Season 2 on 11 August; patch 12.1.5 (13 to 14 October) lists no profession changes.
There is no single best profession in Midnight Season 2. For gold, Inscription, Jewelcrafting, Tailoring and Alchemy (potions) are the S tier on Icy Veins, because their Concentration builds make consumables and gear crafting efficient. The gathering professions (Mining, Herbalism, Skinning) are B tier because of a large glut of materials, although Icy Veins expects them to recover as the season goes on. The earlier version of this page, written before launch, called Mining and Herbalism S tier and Enchanting a steady choice; neither holds in Icy Veins’ current list.
Gold is not the only reason to pick a profession. In Season 2 you can also craft epic gear with the weekly Spark of Tides, add embellishments, and craft housing decor. Prices move daily, so check your server’s Auction House before committing to leveling a profession. For other gold methods, see our Midnight gold guide and Midnight profession changes.

Midnight Profession Tier List
| Tier | Professions | Why (Icy Veins) |
|---|---|---|
| S | Inscription, Jewelcrafting, Tailoring, Alchemy (potions) | Great Concentration builds for consumables. Tailoring’s cooldown cloth crafting has performed well. Rank 2 herbs are expensive, so Alchemy potions do well |
| A | Enchanting, Alchemy (flasks), Blacksmithing, Engineering, Leatherworking | Enchanting and flasks have been weak so far because many costs are materials with no Quality (Petrified Root, Nocturnal Lotus). The crafters have good gear potential in Season 2 but fewer good consumable builds |
| B | Mining, Herbalism, Skinning, Cooking, Fishing | Gathering is expected to recover in Season 2 but has a large material glut. Cooking and Fishing have no Quality, so margins are razor-thin |
Source: Icy Veins, Best Professions to Make Gold in Midnight, updated 11 August 2026 for the Season 2 launch. This is a gold-making ranking. For gear, a profession only has to make the slot you need.
Inscription
S tier. Icy Veins lists Inscription with Jewelcrafting and Tailoring as professions with great Concentration builds for efficient consumable production. They also have good gear crafting potential once Season 2 begins, because players look to craft two-handed Intellect and Agility weapons, rings and cloth gear. Inscription can also craft housing decor (for example, the Magnificent Towering Bookcase uses Midnight Inscription skill 50 and Thalassian Lumber) and, with Alchemy, dyes. Method’s 12.1 profession list contains no new Inscription recipes.
Mining & Herbalism
B tier on Icy Veins. They are expected to become profitable again as Season 2 gear crafting begins, but at the time of writing there was a massive glut of material. Patch 12.1 adds two materials for them: Neutralized Venom Clot, from Venom Infused Mining and Herbalism nodes, and Cursebound Globe, from cursebound nodes. Both only appear in Curse windows on the Coiled Isle: when you defeat an elite Curse Surge enemy, that area becomes Cursed Land and Waters for a while (Method, wow-professions.com). Check the current price of your node’s product before you commit.
Jewelcrafting
S tier. Jewelcrafting has a great Concentration build for consumable production, and gear crafting potential once Season 2 starts (rings are mentioned by Icy Veins). Patch 12.1 adds three recipes: Refine Crystalline Glass (upgrades a rank 1 Crystalline Glass to rank 2), Refine Duskshrouded Stone (rank 1 to rank 2), and the Polished Ammolite embellishment, which gives a random critical strike proc (Method). Embellishment recipes for Jewelcrafting and Engineering come from world drops.
Alchemy
Alchemy is split in the Icy Veins list: potions are S tier and flasks are A tier. Potions with Concentration have done well because Rank 2 herbs cost much more than Rank 1. Flasks have been weaker because part of their cost is materials with no Quality, such as Petrified Root and Nocturnal Lotus. Patch 12.1 adds Concentrated Silvermoon Health Potion, Liquid Luster (a stacking Versatility potion), Alluring Nostrum (an area damage potion that can slow you) and the housing item Ersatz Venom Splatter (Method). Alchemy and Inscription are the two professions that can craft dyes.
Enchanting
A tier. Icy Veins says Enchanting has been relatively weak so far because many costs are materials with no Quality, which weakens Concentration builds, but it expects demand to rise as new high-end content releases. Patch 12.1 adds the weapon enchant Rite of the Hash’ey (random secondary stats, favoring your highest when you are above 80% health) and two housing items, Furious Tiki Mask and Keen Hex Mask (Method). The old text on this page called Enchanting a stable all-season earner; that is not what Icy Veins’ list shows.
Engineering
A tier. Engineering has good gear crafting potential in Season 2 but, like Blacksmithing and Leatherworking, fewer good consumable builds for players who do not take crafting orders (Icy Veins). Patch 12.1 adds the Coiled Snake-Eye embellishment (a random secondary stat proc, choosing your highest on a crit), the Schematic: G-00 Loot-a-Rang toy, R0CKY-To-Go (a consumable that reduces falling speed), Schematic: R0CKY (a helmet enchant parachute) and the Aetherlume Field Lamp housing item (Method).
Tailoring
S tier. Icy Veins notes Tailoring’s cooldown cloth crafting has performed well, with better results expected as Season 2 combat gear crafting begins. It lists Tailoring with Inscription and Jewelcrafting for cloth gear and rings. Patch 12.1 adds the Snakeskin Lining embellishment (a random nature damage-over-time proc) and the Tortollan Slingsack housing item (Method).
Skinning
B tier with Mining and Herbalism. Icy Veins expects it to become profitable again with Season 2, but there is a large material glut. Check the current price of leather before leveling it for gold. Skinning pairs with Leatherworking, which gets four new recipes in 12.1 (one embellishment and three housing items).
Blacksmithing
A tier. Blacksmithing has great gear crafting potential once Season 2 starts but, like Engineering and Leatherworking, fewer good consumable builds for players who skip crafting orders (Icy Veins). Patch 12.1 adds Odious Alloy (from Umbral Tin Ore, Luminant Flux and Refulgent Copper Ingot), the Hunter’s Ritual Stone embellishment (secondary stats while doing Prey) and three housing items: Amani Forgemaster’s Decorative Spear, Rack and Workbench (Method).
Leatherworking
A tier, with the same limits as Blacksmithing and Engineering. Patch 12.1 adds the Adorned Fang embellishment (a haste proc) and three housing items: Pattern: Flat Snakeskin Canopy, Mounted Moby and Stretched Snakeskin Rack (Method). The Leatherworking embellishment recipe drops from the Twin Fangs in the Venomous Abyss raid. Leatherworking uses the leather that Skinning supplies.
Cooking
B tier for gold. Icy Veins says Cooking and Fishing can be used by anyone and have too much competition, with no Quality in their products, so margins are razor-thin on most days. Cooking is mainly worth it for your own food buffs.
Fishing
B tier for gold. Patch 12.1 adds fishing content for the Coiled Isle: venomous pools with island-only fish, a new currency (Coiled Filament) for collectible rewards, new achievements and a new rod, The Coiled Huntress Fishing Rod, with unique effects (Method). It fits collecting more than gold-making.
Patch 12.1 Profession Changes and Season 2 Crafting
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| Knowledge Point reset | New in 12.1. You can reset once per Midnight profession; it refunds all spent points and unlearns recipes you bought with them (you relearn them if you spend the points the same way). Theremis in Silvermoon, near the crafting order table, handles it (wow-professions.com). Reset only if a branch lost its value or points are spread across unfinished branches |
| New recipes | Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Engineering, Jewelcrafting, Tailoring and Leatherworking, most from Renown or vendors; the Zul’jarra renown on the Coiled Isle gives access to several recipes |
| New materials | Neutralized Venom Clot and Cursebound Globe, from Mining and Herbalism nodes on the Coiled Isle |
| Spark of Tides | The Season 2 crafting currency. Method says you can get one per week from the Trailing Xal’atath, Sparks of War (PvP) or Turn Back the Surge quest once the season began; check the current number in game |
| Crafted gear costs | Adventurer and Veteran crafts cost 80 crests. Champion crafts need 2 to 4 Sparks. Hero and Myth crafts need 80 matching Mistcrests plus 2 to 4 Sparks (Warcraft Wiki) |
| Crafted item levels | From 259 to 271 at base quality, up to 318 to 331 at Myth |
| Voidforge | Ten Ascendant Venomstones upgrade a fully upgraded crafted weapon, trinket or necklace; the Venomstones become available the week of 20 October |

How to Choose the Best Profession in Midnight
Pick by the job you want the profession to do:
- Gold with the least work: a crafting profession in the S tier (Inscription, Jewelcrafting, Tailoring or Alchemy) with Concentration, sold as consumables or taken as crafting orders.
- Gear for yourself: the profession that crafts the slot you need. Season 2 gear costs 2 to 4 Sparks per craft (plus crests for Hero and Myth), and Sparks arrive weekly, so crafted pieces are limited.
- Housing: most professions craft decor, and it needs Lumber (see the housing section).
- Cheap materials: match a gatherer with the crafter that uses its materials. Gathering was B tier in October because of the glut.
- Playing on alts: Icy Veins rates cooldown crafts well (Tailoring), and Concentration builds work on any character.
Switching is possible but costs time. Since 12.1 you can also reset knowledge points once per profession, which makes a wrong specialization less costly.
Midnight Best Professions to Make Gold
Icy Veins’ advice for gold in Midnight, from its 11 August update:
- Crafting orders: profit depends on your server, how many clients you can get, and timing the public order market. The best gold from orders should be in the middle to late part of the week, after many crafters have used their weekly quota but before the panic before reset. Orders before popular raid hours can also pay well, because players raise commissions to get gear quickly.
- Concentration: save it for high-volume periods, when competitors run out of it and margins widen.
- Consumables: sell on your server’s raid days. Icy Veins names Wednesday, Sunday and Tuesday as typical, and recommends tracking prices on The Undermine Exchange.
- Buy materials when they are cheap and craft or sell when prices are high. Buying and selling at random can lose money.
If you would rather buy gold than make it, our WoW Gold EU and WoW Gold US pages list current prices. For farming methods other than professions, see solo gold farms.
Midnight Best Profession by Class
No source ranks profession pairs by class. These pairings follow from what you wear and which profession supplies its materials, so treat them as a starting point rather than a ranking. Icy Veins notes that Inscription, Jewelcrafting and Tailoring have the best potential to craft two-handed Intellect and Agility weapons, rings and cloth gear in Season 2.
| Class | Pairing and why |
|---|---|
| Death Knight, Paladin, Warrior (plate) | Blacksmithing with Mining: you craft plate and get the ore |
| Demon Hunter, Druid, Monk, Rogue (leather) | Leatherworking with Skinning: you craft leather and get the hides. Druids can take Alchemy with Herbalism for potions |
| Mage, Priest, Warlock (cloth) | Tailoring, optionally with Enchanting; Tailoring is S tier |
| Evoker, Hunter, Shaman (mail) | Jewelcrafting or Inscription for rings and weapons, with Mining or Herbalism for materials. Check in game which profession crafts mail |
| Any class | Jewelcrafting or Inscription for rings, weapons and gold |
Midnight Best Secondary Profession
Cooking and Fishing are the secondary professions Icy Veins ranks. Both are B tier for gold, because neither has Quality and competition is high. Their use is personal: Cooking makes your own food, and Fishing gives the materials for it plus the new Coiled Isle rewards from patch 12.1 (a currency called Coiled Filament and The Coiled Huntress Fishing Rod). If your time is limited, learn Cooking and buy fish on the Auction House.
Midnight Best Profession for Housing Decor
Housing decor is spread across the professions. Reports from before the launch of housing describe the split as follows: Blacksmithing for metal decor, Engineering for lamps and gadgets, Inscription for much of the wood-style decor, Enchanting for magical decor such as floating books and glowing orbs, Jewelcrafting for stone and gem decor, and Alchemy for dyes. Dyes were limited to Alchemy and Inscription. Check the in-game recipe list before planning around this, because it comes from the alpha and early pre-patch.
Per pre-launch reports, all Midnight decor crafting uses Lumber, which you harvest in the world, and recipes also need that expansion’s decor reagents. The 12.1 patch adds decor recipes in six professions:
| Profession | New 12.1 housing item |
|---|---|
| Alchemy | Ersatz Venom Splatter |
| Blacksmithing | Amani Forgemaster’s Decorative Spear, Rack, Workbench |
| Enchanting | Furious Tiki Mask, Keen Hex Mask |
| Engineering | Aetherlume Field Lamp |
| Tailoring | Tortollan Slingsack |
| Leatherworking | Pattern: Flat Snakeskin Canopy, Mounted Moby, Stretched Snakeskin Rack |
Decor also gives House XP the first time you collect it. For leveling a house, see our Housing Endeavors guide.
Midnight Best Profession FAQ
What are the best professions in WoW Midnight?
For gold, Inscription, Jewelcrafting, Tailoring and Alchemy (potions) are S tier on Icy Veins’ Season 2 list.
Are gathering professions good in Midnight?
They are B tier in October because there is a large glut of materials. Icy Veins expects them to recover as Season 2 crafting picks up.
Can I reset my profession specialization?
Yes. Patch 12.1 lets you reset your Knowledge Points once per Midnight profession. It refunds all points and unlearns the recipes you bought with them.
What do I need to craft Season 2 gear?
Spark of Tides for Champion, Hero and Myth crafts, plus 80 matching Mistcrests for Hero and Myth. Adventurer and Veteran crafts use 80 crests only.
Is Enchanting worth it?
It is A tier on Icy Veins but relatively weak so far because many costs have no Quality. Patch 12.1 adds a weapon enchant and housing items.
Which profession is best for housing?
Most professions craft decor and every Midnight decor recipe needs Lumber. Inscription covers much of the wood-style decor and Alchemy and Inscription make dyes.
Can I change professions later?
Yes, but you lose progress and recipes in the dropped profession. Only the Knowledge Point reset is free.
Do I need old expansion materials?
For housing decor, yes: pre-launch reports said each expansion’s recipes use that expansion’s materials and Lumber. Check each recipe in game for the exact reagents.
