Season 2 Gearing at a Glance

Season 2 numbers on this page were checked on 12 October 2026, a day before patch 12.1.5 changes crest caps and Voidcores. Both changes are covered in the sections that follow.

Gear in Midnight comes from layered systems, and in Season 2 the numbers sit much higher than in Season 1. Veteran-track gear tops out at 295, Champion at 308, Hero at 321 and Myth at 334. The old target of 289 is simply Veteran rank 4: you reach it in your first week. This guide shows where each item level comes from and in what order to chase it.

Track Item level range (rank 1 to 6) Main sources
Adventurer 266 to 282 Outdoor events, Tier 4 delves
Veteran 279 to 295 Raid Finder, Heroic dungeons, delves Tier 5 to 6
Champion 292 to 308 Normal raid, Mythic 0, Mythic+ 2 to 3, delves Tier 7 to 10
Hero 305 to 321 Heroic raid, Mythic+ 4 to 8, Tier 11 delves
Myth 318 to 334 Mythic raid, Mythic+ 9 and higher

Source of the table: Warcraft Wiki, Midnight Season 2 item level reference. Each upgrade costs 20 crests of the matching type.

Understanding Gear Progression in WoW Midnight

Nothing in Season 2 is a single best method. The fastest players stack systems: they fill every Great Vault row each week, upgrade with the right crests, and use the Catalyst for tier pieces.

  • Item level sets the track. Where an item drops decides the track and its maximum rank; crests raise the rank.
  • Crests are the bottleneck. Each crest type has a weekly spending limit of 100, and every upgrade costs 20. Patch 12.1.5 lifts that limit in the week of 20 October.
  • The Great Vault pays more than the content itself. In patch 12.1 a raid vault slot gives gear from one difficulty higher than the difficulty that unlocked it.
  • Tier set comes from tokens and the Catalyst. See the tier set guide.

Early Game Gearing (Catch-Up to 276 and Beyond)

Queues have minimum item levels. You need 266 for Heroic dungeons and an average of 276 for Raid Finder, and Method warns that at 286 or below you will probably have trouble finding a group at all. Close that gap before the Season 2 tracks start to matter.

Catch-up source What you get
Renown (Champion gear) Bracers from Zul’jarra’s Forces at Renown 9, necklace from the Amani Tribe at 9, helm from the Silvermoon Court at 9, belt from the Hara’ti at 8, trinket from The Singularity at 7
Weekly Apex Caches The first two give Veteran gear; collect them in Silvermoon outside the bank
Venom-Cursed Fragments Two fragments convert into one Champion-track item; from the Vaults of Atal’Utek weekly quest and from Khu’tulak after a Temple Incursion (one fragment per week, not guaranteed)
Field Accolades 750 buys a targeted Veteran box and 500 a random one from Maren Silverwing in Silvermoon; earned in Void Strikes and Ritual Sites

Buying two or three cheap pieces for empty slots on the Auction House is still the quickest way to remove weak points. If you would rather skip the whole stage, a leveling boost gets a character to 90 so you can start on this table.

World Content: The Foundation of Fast Progression

Outdoor content gives Adventurer and early Veteran gear and feeds crests into the system. In Season 2 these are the repeatable and weekly activities:

  • Repeatable outdoor events drop Adventurer and Veteran Mistcrests.
  • Weekly outdoor events include Saltheril’s Soiree, Abundance, Legends of the Haranir, Stormarion Assault, Amani Abyss, Special Assignments and Vaults of Atal’Utek, according to the Warcraft Wiki.
  • Weekly caches such as the Apex Cache and the Prey chests.

World activities also count toward the third Great Vault row: 2, 4 or 8 activities unlock its three slots.

Weekly World Content: High Value, Low Effort

The weekly list is the cheapest power in the game because it costs minutes, not runs. Do these every reset on every character you gear:

  • The two Apex Caches (Veteran gear) while you are catching up.
  • Vaults of Atal’Utek, which also supplies a Venom-Cursed Fragment.
  • Purging the Vaults, which can give the Trovehunter’s Bounty map for a delve (see below).

The Season 2 reference on the Warcraft Wiki does not list a world boss item level. An earlier version of this page quoted a 253 weekly drop for Season 1, and we cannot confirm a Season 2 equivalent, so we leave it out.

Hunts System: One of the Most Underrated Gear Sources

Prey hunts have three difficulties and each gives a different track. Loot and vault levels in Season 2:

Difficulty Loot item level Great Vault item level Crests
Normal 266 279 10 Adventurer
Hard 279 292 10 Veteran
Nightmare 292 305 10 Champion

Method counts five Nightmare hunts per week as Champion-track gear. Patch 12.1.5 adds Nightmare Prey Hunt Champion gear chests as a source of Ascendant Venomstones.

Delves and Mid-Tier Activities

Bountiful delves are the main solo source from Tier 4 up. Per the Warcraft Wiki, delve loot in Season 2 rises from 266 at Tier 1 to 295 at Tier 8, and the Great Vault slot a delve earns is always higher than the loot itself: 279 at Tier 1, 289 at Tier 4 and 305 at Tier 8. The biggest single step is from Tier 6 to Tier 7, where loot jumps from 282 to 292. The tier-by-tier table, including map levels, is in the Delver’s Journey guide linked below.

Tier 8 is the first level worth running with a Restored Coffer Key, which turns each completion into a Champion item (keys are capped at 6 per week). A Delver’s Bounty in a Tier 8 or higher delve guarantees one Hero-track piece per week. Tier 11 delves drop Hero Mistcrests and, from 12.1.5, Ascendant Venomstones. The rank rewards that unlock all this are in our Delver’s Journey guide.

Mythic Dungeons: Your Entry into Real Endgame

Heroic dungeons from the non-seasonal pool drop 276, and Mythic dungeons from it drop 289. The Season 2 pool is better:

  • Heroic season dungeons: loot 276, vault 289, 10 Veteran crests.
  • Mythic 0: loot 292 (Champion rank 1) from every boss, vault 302, 10 Champion crests. After the first week the lockout is daily, as Method describes it.

Eight dungeons make up the Season 2 pool: Kings’ Rest, Temple of Sethraliss, Ruby Life Pools, Voidscar Arena, Altar of Fangs, Blinding Vale, Murder Row and Den of Nalorakk. Mythic 0 is the right stage between 266 and 290: easy groups, reliable pieces and crests, and a clean step into keys.

Mythic+: The Core of Fast Gearing

Key level End-of-dungeon loot Great Vault Crests per run
+2 and +3 295 305 12 to 14 Champion
+4 298 308 10 Hero
+5 302 308 10 Hero
+6 and +7 305 311 to 315 12 to 14 Hero
+8 308 315 18 Hero
+9 308 315 10 Myth
+10 311 318 12 Myth
+11 and +12 or higher not listed not listed 14 to 16 Myth

Source: Warcraft Wiki, Midnight Season 2. Hero-track gear starts dropping at +6 according to Method, and +10 or higher gives Myth gear in the vault. Mythic+ also fills the dungeon row of the vault (1, 4 or 8 runs) and counts for the Catalyst. Patch 12.1.5 brings back Keystone Myth (3,600 rating) and tunes outlier dungeons. If you need keys quickly, our Mythic+ bundle runs them for you. For which specs are strong in keys, see the Mythic+ tier list.

Weekly Vault: The Real Progress Engine

The Great Vault has three rows, each with three thresholds:

Row Slots unlock at
Raid 2, 4 or 6 Season 2 bosses
Dungeons 1, 4 or 8 Heroic, Mythic or Timewalking dungeons
World 2, 4 or 8 world activities (such as delves)

Since 12.1, the raid row rewards one difficulty higher: two Normal bosses give a Hero-track item, Heroic gives Myth, and Mythic gives top Myth items. With three slots unlocked you can also take a Nebulous Voidcore (a bonus roll) instead of gear. Bonus rolls cost 1 coin per raid boss, down from 2, and loot from them is also one tier higher. Check the vault before you spend crests or the Catalyst.

Raids: High Risk, High Reward

The Venomous Abyss has eight bosses and ends with Ula’tek. Wing 1 opened on 18 August and the fourth wing on 8 September, so all eight bosses are open. Item levels by difficulty and boss order:

Difficulty Early bosses Middle Late Final two Rare drop
Raid Finder 279 282 285 289 296
Normal 292 295 298 302 309
Heroic 305 308 311 315 322
Mythic 318 321 324 344 335

The final two Mythic bosses (The Coiled Altar and Ula’tek) drop the equivalent of Myth rank 9, item level 344. Tier tokens drop from five bosses: The Twin Fangs (head), The Lost Explorers (shoulders), Vashnik the Malignant (chest), Entombed Sentinels (hands) and Sszorak (legs), with Ula’tek dropping the omni-token. Raid Finder needs an average item level of 276. Patch 12.1.5 adds a one-boss raid, The Unbinding of Kith’ix, with Story, Normal, Heroic and Mythic. If you want a full clear without learning each fight, the Venomous Abyss bundle covers it.

Crafting: The Shortcut to 289 ilvl

Crafting no longer ends at 289. Crafted gear scales with the crest used on it:

Crafted quality No crest Adventurer Veteran Champion (Spark) Hero Myth
Tier 1 259 266 279 292 305 318
Tier 3 265 273 286 299 312 325
Tier 5 271 279 292 305 318 331

A top-quality piece with Myth crests reaches 331, which is the “max crafted” number Method quotes. Champion crafts need Sparks, and Hero and Myth crafts need Sparks plus 80 crests. Early in the season save Sparks for embellished gear, and wait a few days before crafting on day one, because many Venomous Abyss embellishments were changed less than 24 hours before the season started (Icy Veins). PvP crafting uses Heraldry reagents: 309, 322 or 335 PvP item level. Private orders to skilled crafters are the cheapest way to get a piece without levelling the profession yourself.

Crest System: The Hidden Efficiency Trick

Weekly spending is capped at 100 crests per crest type, which pays for five upgrades at 20 crests each, until patch 12.1.5 lifts the cap in the week of 20 October. Crest sources in Season 2:

Crest Where it drops
Adventurer Mistcrest Repeatable outdoor events, Tier 4 delves
Veteran Mistcrest Raid Finder, Heroic dungeons, delves Tier 5 to 6, Trovehunter’s Bounty Tiers 4 to 5
Champion Mistcrest Normal raid, Mythic 0, Mythic+ 2 to 3, delves Tier 7 to 10, Trovehunter’s Bounty Tiers 6 to 7
Hero Mistcrest Heroic raid, Mythic+ 4 to 8, Tier 11 delves, Trovehunter’s Bounty Tier 8 and higher
Myth Mistcrest Mythic raid, Mythic+ 9 and higher

Once you earn the crest-trading feat, crests convert up at 3 to 1. Spend crests on the pieces that matter most first (weapon, trinkets, tier slots), not on every slot.

Catalyst System: Fast Track to Set Bonuses

The Catalyst turns a non-tier item into the tier piece for your class. In Season 2 it keeps the secondary stats, tertiary stats, gem sockets and cantrip effects of the original item, so you can convert your best-rolled piece and still get the set bonus. Only head, shoulders, chest, hands and legs count toward the set; belts and boots only get the tier look.

  • Charges: they recharge every two weeks, and Mythic+ dungeons, Season 2 raid bosses, bountiful delves and rated PvP also drop them once you have unlocked the “Catalyst Unbound” achievement (Method: that happens when you hold the 4-piece bonus).
  • Extra charge: Ahead of the Curve, Keystone Master and 1,800 PvP rating each give an additional charge.
  • Currency: Season 2 uses Venomblight Manaflux.

Details on which slots to convert first are in the tier set guide.

PvP Gearing: A Parallel Progression Path

PvP gear has a base item level for PvE and a higher level that applies in Arenas and Battlegrounds. Season 2 values:

Set PvP item level Source
Venomous Aspirant (unrated) starts at 324 Honor, from Captain Dawnrunner; upgraded with Mistcrests and gold
Venomous Warmonger (War Mode) 324 Bloody Tokens, from Knight-Lord Bloodvalor
Venomous Gladiator (rated) starts at 337 Conquest, from Irissa Bloodstar
Crafted (Thalassian Competitor) 309, 322 or 335 Venomous Combatant’s, Aspirant’s or Gladiator’s Heraldry

For modes, rewards and rating steps see our Midnight PvP overview.

Final Strategy: How to Gear Fast (Summary)

  1. Reach 276 to 286 with caches, renown pieces and cheap Auction House buys.
  2. Run Mythic 0 and delves Tier 4 to 8 until you hit the low 290s.
  3. Start Mythic+ and fill all three vault rows every week.
  4. Raid for tier tokens and take the Catalyst after the weekly reset, not before.
  5. Spend crests on weapon, trinkets and tier slots first.
  6. Craft only with the crest you can afford to finish: a Hero or Myth craft needs Sparks and 80 crests.
  7. When 12.1.5 lands, collect Ascendant Venomstones and Voidcores.

What to Do in Your First Two Weeks

Week Do this
Week 1 Renown gear, both Apex Caches, Mythic 0 daily, Tier 6 to 8 delves with keys, Nightmare Prey, a first Raid Finder pass for tokens
Week 2 Mythic+ 4 to 8 for Hero crests, Normal and Heroic raid for tier, first Catalyst conversion after reset, vault choice reviewed before spending crests
After 12.1.5 Ascendant Venomstones (10 each, from week of 20 October), extra Voidcore each week, crest cap lifted

Item level is not everything: simming your gear, enchants and consumables also moves your damage. Our Midnight Druid guide shows the Season 2 enchant and flask list for one class as an example.
