Key Takeaways

  • Mount count: the beta confirms 23 mounts, and 37 have been datamined so far, so expect the list to grow by release.
  • First ride: you can use your first ground mount at level 40 once you learn riding, and it gives +60% ground speed.
  • Level 60 upgrade: Journeyman Riding raises that to +100%, and there are no flying mounts to outrun it.
  • New sources: Spectral Bear costs 55 Legacy Points, Pack Kodo costs 6,000 Merchant’s Favor, and Black War Mounts open at PvP Rank 11.
  • Skyborne and Paladins: Skyborne ride Galestriders, and Undead Paladins get a questline for the Forsaken Charger.
  • Plan your gold: riding training is the expensive part, and reputation and PvP standing can bring the price down.

WoW Forever is built around ground travel, so the mount you pick and the way you unlock it shape every hour you spend in Azeroth. This guide walks through every mount family, the riding skill that gates them, and the activities that drop or sell each one.

New Mounts in WoW Forever

New mounts available in WoW Forever

On top of the mounts you already know from Classic, WoW Forever adds Galestriders, skeletal horses, kodos, class mounts and a handful of rare drops. A few of them are tied to systems that only exist in Forever, such as the Legacy system and Merchant’s Favor. Right now we know of 37 mounts: 23 of them were confirmed during beta testing, and the rest are expected to show up when the game launches. The table below lists the mounts we know about and where each one comes from.

Note: the beta is still moving, and several rows only say “special acquisition source” because the exact drop or vendor has not been confirmed. Treat those entries as work in progress and expect details to change before release.

Beyond this core list, WoW Forever also brings in a few whole new mount families: Warden Sabers, Devilsaurs and Druid Moose variants. They are worth more than another recolour to collect. Mounts are spread across many more systems than in Classic, which gives collectors a reason to touch PvP, reputation, professions and account progression, so it pays to understand every source before you start spending gold.

Short on gold? The WoW Forever gold guide shows ways to earn it.

Galestrider Mounts

The Galestriders are the racial mounts of the Skyborne race. They are big, wind-bird-like mounts that come in several colours, and they are among the most obvious visual changes in WoW Forever. If you start as a Skyborne you will meet them naturally through racial questing. The standard Galestriders are:

Later, Skyborne characters can upgrade to faster versions of each one:

Genn Fairweather is both the Stablemaster and the Riding Trainer on Zephras Isle. The standard Galestrider needs level 40 and Galestrider Riding, so plan that visit once you hit the level.

Empyrean Galestrider

Empyrean Galestrider mount in WoW Forever

The Empyrean is one of three standard colours you can buy directly from the Stablemaster on Zephras Isle.

Regal Galestrider

Regal Galestrider mount in WoW Forever

The Regal comes from the Skyborne mount progression rather than a straight purchase from the vendor.

Stormy Galestrider

Stormy Galestrider mount in WoW Forever

Like the Empyrean, the Stormy can be bought from Genn Fairweather on Zephras Isle.

Umber Galestrider

Umber Galestrider mount in WoW Forever

The Umber is the fourth standard colour and is sold by the same Zephras Isle vendor.

Swift Empyrean Galestrider

Swift Empyrean Galestrider mount in WoW Forever

The fast version of the Empyrean arrives through the Skyborne fast mount progression.

Swift Stormy Galestrider

Swift Stormy Galestrider mount in WoW Forever

The Swift Stormy follows the same upgrade path as the other fast Galestriders.

Swift Regal Galestrider

Swift Regal Galestrider mount in WoW Forever

The Swift Regal is the upgraded form of the Regal, available through the same fast mount progression.

Swift Umber Galestrider

Swift Umber Galestrider mount in WoW Forever

The Swift Umber finishes the set and, like its siblings, is a racial upgrade rather than a drop.

Warden Saber Mounts

Warden Sabers are a newly introduced kind of saber mount with their own armoured look, which makes them stand out from the usual Night Elf racial sabers. The Warden Saber mounts are:

  • Black Warden Saber Mount;
  • Brown Warden Saber Mount;
  • Gray Warden Saber Mount;
  • White Warden Saber Mount.

Their exact sources are not confirmed yet. What we do know is that Warden Sabers are separate from the standard Night Elf racial mounts and should come from dedicated WoW Forever content, so don’t waste racial reputation on them.

Devilsaur Mounts

Devilsaur mount in WoW Forever

The Devilsaur family is one of the more eye-catching additions. Instead of fighting these beasts in places like Un’Goro, you can now add a rideable Devilsaur to your collection. The five colours are:

  • Black Devilsaur Mount;
  • Blue Devilsaur Mount;
  • Green Devilsaur Mount;
  • Purple Devilsaur Mount;
  • White Devilsaur Mount.

There is also the Venomhide Ravasaur, but it belongs to a separate Ravasaur set and is not one of the five Devilsaurs.

Druid Moose Mounts

Druid Moose is another new set. Despite the name, these are ordinary collectible mounts and do not replace the Druid’s Travel Form. The four Moose mounts are:

  • Black Druid Moose Mount;
  • Green Druid Moose Mount;
  • Gray Druid Moose Mount;
  • White Druid Moose Mount.

All four belong to the same Moose family and slot into your normal mount collection.

How to Get Mounts in WoW Forever

To get your first mounts you need two things: the right level and the riding skill for your race. Standard riding opens at level 40 and lets you use ground mounts with +60% speed. After that first purchase, the world of mounts opens up a lot. You can pick up more mounts through the following activities:

  • Racial mount vendors;
  • Reputation rewards;
  • PvP ranks;
  • Class quests;
  • Legacy progression;
  • Rare dungeon and raid drops;
  • Merchant’s Favor;
  • Special questlines;
  • Game editions and promotions.

Every race also has its own racial riding type and its own mount family. If you play a Skyborne character, the skill you need is Galestrider Riding. Once you hit the required level, head to your racial riding trainer. Training takes most of the gold, and before you can even afford it you have to level up first. If you would rather skip that stretch, our WoW Forever powerleveling can get you to the riding levels sooner.

A good rule of thumb: decide early which of the sources above you actually care about. Collectors will touch almost all of them, but if you just want to move faster, the racial riding route covers everything you need before you worry about rarer rewards.

WoW Forever Riding Skill

WoW Forever uses the Burning Crusade riding model rather than the Vanilla price model. The expensive part is the riding training itself, while the mount you ride is far cheaper by comparison. In practice there are two tiers of ground mounts.

Riding Tier Required Level Mount Speed Riding Cost
Apprentice Riding 40 +60% Ground Speed 80 Gold
Journeyman Riding 60 +100% Ground Speed 900 Gold

A level 40 mount costs an extra 20 Gold, which brings the normal route to 100 Gold in total. A level 60 epic mount usually costs another 100 Gold on top of the training, so that tier comes to 1,000 Gold. Reputation and PvP price reductions can lower these numbers, which is why it makes sense to grind some reputation before you buy an expensive mount.

Tip: riding training is where the bulk of the gold goes, so save for the 900 Gold Journeyman training before you worry about the mount itself, and if gold is the bottleneck, our WoW Forever gold offers can cover the gap.

The first 60% mount is a huge quality-of-life upgrade. Trips across Stranglethorn, Tanaris and the Plaguelands get much shorter when you no longer have to run everywhere. At level 60, Journeyman Riding doubles your base ground speed. Because Forever has no flying mounts, that speed matters even more at endgame. If you want a hand with the whole process, there is a ready-made riding skill service in the store.

WoW Forever Racial Mounts

By default your character uses the mount family tied to its own race. Here is the full overview:

Race Mount Family Examples Required Reputation for Other Races
Human Horses Pinto, Brown Horse, Chestnut Mare Stormwind
Dwarf Rams Brown Ram, Gray Ram, White Ram Ironforge
Night Elf Sabers Spotted Frostsaber, Striped Frostsaber, Striped Nightsaber Darnassus
Gnome Mechanostriders Blue, Green, Red, Unpainted Mechanostrider Gnomeregan Exiles
Orc Wolves Brown Wolf, Dire Wolf, Timber Wolf Orgrimmar
Undead Skeletal Horses Blue, Brown, Red Skeletal Horse Undercity
Tauren Kodos Brown Kodo, Gray Kodo Thunder Bluff
Troll Raptors Emerald, Turquoise, Violet Raptor Darkspear Trolls
Skyborne Galestriders Empyrean, Regal, Stormy, Umber Galestrider High Order (Alliance) / Windshapers (Horde)

To ride the racial mounts of another race, you need Exalted reputation with that race’s capital faction. On the Horde side that means Exalted with Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff, the Darkspear Trolls and Undercity for Wolves, Kodos, Raptors and Skeletal Horses respectively. Alliance characters need Exalted with Stormwind, Ironforge, Darnassus and the Gnomeregan Exiles. The Galestrider mounts follow a similar method, using the High Order on the Alliance side and the Windshapers on the Horde side.

Note: fast racial mounts become available alongside Journeyman Riding at level 60, and these versions give +100% ground speed.

This table is also a handy shortcut when you read the rest of the guide. Many of the PvP, special and skeletal mounts you will see later are simply upgraded or recoloured versions of a racial family, so knowing which race rides what makes the other sections easier to follow.

WoW Forever Reputation Mounts

Reputation mounts reward you for progress with a faction, rather than for simply reaching a riding level. Some need a direct reputation standing, while others use a currency earned alongside the faction. The reputation mounts available so far are:

Pack Kodo

Reins of the Pack Kodo mount in WoW Forever

The Pack Kodo ties into the new supply factions and the Merchant’s Favor currency. You need 6,000 Merchant’s Favor to buy it, and the mount is sold by:

Most Merchant’s Favor comes from completing Waylaid Crates. You fill each crate with the profession materials it asks for and then hand it in to your faction’s supply organisation. Alliance players work with the Azeroth Commerce Authority, and Horde players progress through Durotar Supply and Logistics. Because the currency is tied to professions, it suits crafters especially well.

Winterspring Frostsaber

Reins of the Winterspring Frostsaber mount in WoW Forever

The Winterspring Frostsaber is one of the best-known reputation mounts for Alliance players. To earn it, you build up reputation with the Wintersaber Trainers in Winterspring. Unlike many other mounts, it does not ask you to kill a particular boss, but it still takes a fair amount of effort.

Reputation mounts reward patience more than luck, so the sooner you start, the sooner the standing and currency pile up in the background while you do other things.

WoW Forever PvP Mounts

PvP mounts in WoW Forever unlock through the new Rank Point system. The Black War Mounts start at PvP Rank 11, which means the Commander title for the Alliance and the Lieutenant General title for the Horde. Your rank now comes from Rank Points rather than from spending Honor, and Honor points stay in the game as the currency for PvP purchases.

Reaching Rank 11 is not a casual afternoon task. The ranking system works on weekly progression, so completing this collection takes sustained PvP play. Alterac Valley also has its own faction-specific mounts, tied to its reputation progression. If you want to shorten the climb, our PvP rank boost is there for it.

Tip: rank is weekly, so a steady schedule beats one huge session. Plan your PvP evenings across the whole week instead of cramming everything into a single weekend.

Alliance Black War Mounts

The Alliance gets four Black War Mounts, one for each of the main racial families:

Black War Steed

The Black War Steed is the horse option, in the family that Humans ride at the racial level.

Black War Ram

The Black War Ram is the ram option, in the family that Dwarves ride at the racial level.

Black War Tiger

The Black War Tiger belongs to the saber line that Night Elves use at the racial level.

Black Battlestrider

The Black Battlestrider is the Mechanostrider pick for the Gnome side of the Alliance.

Horde Black War Mounts

The Horde also has four, one for each of its racial families:

Black War Wolf

The Black War Wolf is the wolf option, matching the Orc racial family.

Red Skeletal Warhorse

The Red Skeletal Warhorse is the Undead pick and follows the skeletal horse line.

Black War Kodo

The Black War Kodo is the kodo option, in the family that Tauren ride at the racial level.

Black War Raptor

Whistle of the Black War Raptor mount in WoW Forever

The Black War Raptor is the Troll option, in the raptor family.

WoW Forever Class Mounts

Class mounts in WoW Forever are tied to specific classes and their quest lines. Paladins and Warlocks are still the two classes that have mounts of their own:

  • Paladin: Warhorse, Charger, Forsaken Warhorse, Forsaken Charger;
  • Warlock: Felsteed, Dreadsteed.

Paladin Mounts

Paladins get class mounts unlocked through Paladin-specific progression, not from the usual racial mount vendors. The Paladin mounts are:

Human and Dwarf Paladins still receive the familiar Warhorse and Charger, while Undead Paladins get a unique version of each one through their class quests. If you want to save the legwork, our Paladin class mounts service covers the Paladin Epic Mount.

Note: the table near the top of this guide lists the Warhorse under the Forsaken Paladin questline, while the paragraph above describes the standard Warhorse for Human and Dwarf Paladins. The beta data is not fully consistent here, so check again before launch.

Warlock Mounts

Warlocks also keep their traditional class mounts. They come from Warlock-specific progression and use demonic horse models instead of the normal racial mounts. The Warlock mounts are:

The Felsteed is the earlier Warlock mount, and the Dreadsteed is the faster level 60 version.

WoW Forever Legacy Mounts

Legacy mounts reward your account-wide progress in the Legacy System. Instead of grinding one boss or one vendor, you earn them by finishing Legacy Challenges across different areas of the game. The current Legacy mount is:

Reins of the Spectral Bear mount in WoW Forever

You can get the Spectral Bear by earning 55 Legacy Points. Points come from many activities, including levelling, professions, exploring, PvP, reputation and more. You can reach the full total on a single character, but it takes time, so think of the Spectral Bear as a reward for playing the whole game rather than for one grind.

Because the points come from so many activities, there is no single wrong way to chase this mount. Mix whatever you already enjoy, and keep an eye on your Legacy Point total as you go.

WoW Forever Rare Mounts

Rare mounts come from gaining reputation, fighting dungeon bosses, clearing raids and working through progression paths. They are what collectors keep chasing after the ordinary riding mounts are covered, and a few familiar Vanilla rarities return in Forever. Here is the overview:

Mount Source Location
Deathcharger’s Reins Baron Rivendare Stratholme
Swift Zulian Tiger High Priest Thekal Zul’Gurub
Swift Razzashi Raptor Bloodlord Mandokir Zul’Gurub
Blue Qiraji Battle Tank Ahn’Qiraj enemies Temple of Ahn’Qiraj
Green Qiraji Battle Tank Ahn’Qiraj enemies Temple of Ahn’Qiraj
Yellow Qiraji Battle Tank Ahn’Qiraj enemies Temple of Ahn’Qiraj
Red Qiraji Battle Tank Ahn’Qiraj enemies Temple of Ahn’Qiraj
Black Qiraji Battle Tank Ahn’Qiraj opening event Scarab Gong questline

Deathcharger’s Reins

Deathcharger's Reins mount in WoW Forever

The Deathcharger’s Reins are one of the classic rare dungeon mounts, and they are back in WoW Forever. The mount drops from Baron Rivendare in Stratholme, so you need to clear the relevant part of Stratholme and defeat him. No reputation or currency is required, just the dungeon grind. If you would rather not spend the evenings on it, our team can take on Rivendare’s Deathcharger for you.

Zul’Gurub Mounts

Zul’Gurub holds two rare raid mounts in WoW Forever. You get them by killing the named bosses, as opposed to faction quests and reputation vendors. The Zul’Gurub mounts are:

Note: this is datamined information and may change before release.

Swift Zulian Tiger

Swift Zulian Tiger mount in WoW Forever

The Swift Zulian Tiger drops from High Priest Thekal.

Swift Razzashi Raptor

Swift Razzashi Raptor mount in WoW Forever

The Swift Razzashi Raptor is acquired from Bloodlord Mandokir.

Qiraji Battle Tanks

The Qiraji Battle Tanks are a unique mount family tied to Ahn’Qiraj. Most of them drop inside the raid, while the Black version follows a much more limited path. The Qiraji Battle Tank mounts are:

  • Blue Qiraji Battle Tank;
  • Green Qiraji Battle Tank;
  • Yellow Qiraji Battle Tank;
  • Red Qiraji Battle Tank;
  • Black Qiraji Battle Tank.

Note: this is also datamined information and subject to change.

The Blue, Green, Yellow and Red versions are made from Qiraji Resonating Crystals, for example the Black Qiraji Resonating Crystal, which come from enemies found in Ahn’Qiraj. Using the crystals is directly connected to the raid as well. The Black Qiraji Battle Tank is different: it comes from the Ahn’Qiraj opening event and the Scarab Gong questline, and it works as a prestige item rather than a regular mount farm.

WoW Forever Edition and Promotional Mounts

A few mounts come from game editions rather than from normal gameplay. You still need the appropriate riding skill before your character can use them. The two main edition mounts are the Cerulean Prideclaw and the Veteran Adventurer’s Loyal Companion.

The Cerulean Prideclaw is included with the WoW Forever upgrade packs, so it is something you decide on at purchase time rather than farm in the world.

The Veteran Adventurer’s Loyal Companion comes with the Skyborne Epic Pack or the Warcraft Forever Collection.

WoW Forever Flying Mounts

There are no flying mounts in WoW Forever. Travel stays limited to ground mounts, which is exactly why Journeyman Riding at level 60 matters so much: it gives you the full +100% ground mount speed, and nothing in the air competes with it.

Need to get around faster? Our WoW Forever travel guide lists flight paths, boats and zeppelins.

All the mounts in this guide, from the first level 40 ride to the rarest drops, are therefore about ground travel, collecting and bragging rights. Flight paths, boats, zeppelins and the other original Azeroth transport methods fill in the gaps your mount cannot cover.

To sum it all up, WoW Forever gives collectors far more to chase than a basic level 40 racial ride. Galestriders, Legacy rewards, PvP mounts, rare drops and faction rewards each open a separate collection path. Start with riding, because extra movement speed helps with nearly everything else in Azeroth. PvP players can aim for the Black War Mounts, profession-minded players have the Pack Kodo, and completionists can lose plenty of evenings in Stratholme.

Frequently Asked Questions

What level do you get a mount in WoW Forever?

You get your first ground mount at level 40, once you have learned Apprentice Riding. These mounts boost your movement speed by 60% compared to running. The next set of ground mounts becomes available after you get Journeyman Riding and reach level 60.

How much does a mount cost in WoW Forever?

A standard level 40 setup costs about 100 Gold before any reductions, and most of that goes to training. The fast level 60 setup costs about 1,000 Gold. Your reputation and PvP standing can bring these prices down.

How do you learn riding in WoW Forever?

Go to the riding trainer for your racial mount family once you meet the requirements. Normal racial riding opens at level 40, followed by the faster racial riding at level 60. Skyborne players learn Galestrider Riding instead of the usual racial riding skill.

What is the fastest mount in WoW Forever?

Journeyman Riding gives your ground mounts a +100% speed increase, and several mounts offer that top standard ground speed. There are no flying mounts that could beat it at endgame.

Does WoW Forever have flying mounts?

No. Travel is built around ground mounts, flight paths, boats, zeppelins and the other forms of original Azeroth transport.

Are there new mounts in WoW Forever?

Yes. WoW Forever adds new Galestriders, Skeletal Horses, Kodos, Warden Sabers, Devilsaurs, Druid Moose mounts and unique rewards. It also introduces mounts tied to Legacy progression, Merchant’s Favor and the new Undead Paladin.

How do you get PvP mounts in WoW Forever?

The Black War Mounts unlock at PvP Rank 11. Alliance players reach Commander, Horde players reach Lieutenant General, and your faction then gets access to its own Black War Mount selection.

How do you get the Spectral Bear in WoW Forever?

You earn the Spectral Bear through the Legacy System by collecting 55 Legacy Points. Points come from levelling, professions, exploring, PvP, reputation and other activities, and one character can reach the total over time.
