As Blizzard introduces addon restrictions in the upcoming Midnight expansion, developers are adding a series of built-in interface features meant to replace popular combat addons. One of the most notable is the complete rework of the enemy nameplate system, currently being tested in early alpha builds.
🔮 Reworked Nameplates
In Midnight, enemy nameplates will receive a complete visual and functional overhaul. The update affects NPCs, monsters, and bosses across every activity — raids, dungeons, and world content alike. The redesigned panels will now clearly display:
- Creature rarity (Normal, Rare, Elite, Boss, etc.)
- Current and total health values
- Important buffs and debuffs
- Active abilities with cast indicators and interrupt markers

⚙️ Nameplate Settings & Customization
Players will have extensive customization options, covering both functionality and visual appearance. The new “Nameplates” section in the settings menu includes the following adjustable parameters:
- Overall scale (1–5)
- Buff/debuff icon size (70%–140%)
- Style presets: Standard, Classic, Flat, Blocked, Focused
- Displayed info: health percentage, numeric values, rarity icon
- Cast display: spell name, icon, target, highlight for interruptible casts
- Threat display: progressive or instant taunt visualization
- Buffs/Debuffs for enemies, player, and allies (including major effects)
- Debuff density slider (0–50)
- Simplified panels for pets, creatures, and friendly NPCs

🌟 Visual Highlights & Effects
The cast-bar section now includes a highlight system for important spells:
- Yellow outline & glow — for major interruptible abilities
- Red outline — when the creature targets the player

🔧 Comparison with Addons
Although the new interface covers many core features, it still falls short of addon-level flexibility offered by tools like Plater or ElvUI. For example, users cannot yet customize text fonts, color conditions, or reposition interface elements freely.
⚠️ Cons: No color logic for priority targets, health thresholds, or cast alerts — a drawback for high-end Mythic+ and raid players.
🚧 Early Alpha Impressions
This is only the first iteration of the new nameplate system. Testers expect additional visual styles, color options, and better debuff tracking tools as development continues.
