The Best Way to Gear Up in The War Within
Campaign Completion
WoW’s gear progression system is well-structured from the ground up. The developers have carefully planned each step of how you can obtain gear. In the early stages of The War Within, the best way to get started with gearing is by completing the Campaign. This will set you up for tackling Mythic+ dungeons and raids later on.
The Campaign should be your first priority when you enter the new expansion. You’ll be given a series of quests to complete, and in return, you’ll receive various rewards, including new gear that will help you progress.
Auction House
While not the most obvious choice for early gearing in WoW, the Auction House can be a valuable resource for getting pre-raid gear and BoE epics. Just be sure you have enough Gold to make the purchases. Keep in mind that prices are likely to skyrocket when The War Within Season 1 launches, as many players will list items at high prices in the early days.
The Auction House can also help fill any gaps in your equipment, especially if you’re struggling to get certain items from raids or Mythic+ keys. At Onlyfarms, you can buy WoW Gold for any server at the best prices, ensuring you always have enough currency to purchase whatever gear or items you need!
Dengeon Gear
Dungeon Gear
Running dungeons is one of the most effective ways to gear up in The War Within. This activity provides a clear progression system, allowing you to steadily upgrade your equipment from basic to top-tier. As the new expansion begins, you can dive into various dungeon types in WoW:
- Normal
- Heroic
- Mythic
- Mythic+
Focusing on Mythic+ dungeons is crucial for gearing up in The War Within. You can comfortably complete Mythic 0 dungeons with gear around 590 ilvl. From there, you can advance to M+2 and beyond, obtaining increasingly powerful gear.
You can participate in dungeons through the Dungeon Finder or by teaming up with friends. Here’s the gear ilvl you can expect from basic difficulty dungeons in TWW Season 1:
- Normal — Item Level 554 (Explorer 3/8 Gear)
- Heroic — Item Level 567 (Adventurer 4/8 Gear)
- Mythic — Item Level 593 (Veteran 4/8 Gear)
With the latest M+ system update, the best gear becomes available after completing +10 Keystones. Below is a table detailing the ilvl of gear you can obtain from dungeons in The War Within:
Difficulty | Pre-Season | Season 1 Gear | Great Vault Gear |
---|---|---|---|
Normal | 554 | 554 | — |
Heroic | Explorer 4 (567) | Adventurer 4 (580) | Veteran 4 (593) |
Mythic | — | Veteran 4 (593) | Champion 3 (603) |
+2 | — | Champion 1 (597) | Champion 4 (606) |
+3 | — | Champion 1 (597) | Hero 1 (610) |
+4 | — | Champion 2 (600) | Hero 1 (610) |

Raid Gear
Continuing our WoW The War Within gearing guide, we can’t overlook Raid gear. No significant changes are expected at the start of the expansion, so you’ll still be able to challenge Raid bosses across four different difficulty levels:
- LFR
- Normal
- Heroic
- Mythic
The first Raid you’ll encounter in Season 1 is Nerub’ar Palace. Depending on the difficulty you choose, here’s the gear you can expect to earn:
Difficulty | Type | Bosses 1-2 | Bosses 3-4 | Bosses 5-6 | Bosses 7-8 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
LFR | Regular | 571 | 574 | 577 | 580 |
Very Rare | 580 | 580 | 580 | 580 | |
Normal | Regular | 584 | 587 | 590 | 593 |
Very Rare | 593 | 593 | 593 | 593 | |
Heroic | Regular | 597 | 600 | 603 | 606 |
Very Rare | 606 | 606 | 606 | 606 | |
Mythic | Regular | 610 | 613 | 616 | 619 |
Very Rare | 619 | 619 | 619 | 619 |

World Boss Gear
Another method for gearing up in WoW is by taking on World Bosses. While the gear they drop isn’t at the highest item level, it can still be a good way to prepare for Mythic+ and Raid content. Just like in previous expansions, World Bosses in The War Within spawn in specific areas at set times. Here are the World Bosses you’ll encounter in Khaz Algar:
- Kordac, the Dormant Protector
- Aggregation of Horrors
- Shurrai, Atrocity of the Undersea
- Orta, the Broken Mountain
These bosses drop items for any gear slot with an item level of 571. Below are some examples of potential loot:
- Girdle of the Gleaming Dawn
- Lightseeker’s Robes
- Crystal Star Cuisses
- Sturdy Chitinous Striders
- Seal of the Silent Vigil
While these bosses don’t drop top-tier gear, defeating them is a great way to strengthen your character early on as you work toward higher-level content.
World Quest Gear
Completing World Quests can serve as a useful transitional phase for gearing up in The War Within. While the equipment obtained from these quests may not be considered BiS (Best in Slot), it can still be beneficial until you acquire better alternatives from Raids or Mythic+ dungeons. Keep in mind that not all World Quests offer gear as a reward, so we strongly recommend checking your map for quests that provide worthwhile equipment.
Profession Gear
Wearing profession gear can be advantageous thanks to the various Embellishments you can apply. With the launch of WoW The War Within, the mechanics remain unchanged; you can still utilize crafted gear until you find better options from higher-level content like Raids or Mythic+ Keys. Additionally, you can customize your crafted gear with the following Embellishments:
- Arathor Armor Patch
- Captured Starlight
- Blessed Weapon Grip
- Earthen Master’s Arsenal
- Elemental Focusing Lens
- Writhing Armor Banding
If you’re wondering how to gear up quickly in The War Within, acquiring profession gear is a great solution. It’s easy to obtain and doesn’t require grinding, providing you with guaranteed gear. Just be aware that prices for crafted items may be significantly higher in the early stages of the expansion.
Reputation Gear
Just like in previous expansions, The War Within introduces several factions that you can level up your reputation with in exchange for exclusive rewards, including gear. While this method may not replace the primary gearing sources in TWW, it can serve as a useful supplement in some cases. Below is a list of the main factions along with the rewards you can earn from them:
Faction | Reward Type | Item Level | Reputation Level |
---|---|---|---|
Council of Dornogal | Cloak | 467 | Level 2 |
Shoulders | 584 | Level 7 | |
Boots | 597 | Level 16 | |
Assembly of the Deeps | Necklace | 509 | Level 2 |
Helm | 584 | Level 8 | |
Belt | 597 | Level 19 | |
Arathi of the Hallowfall | Gloves | 528 | Level 2 |
Chest | 584 | Level 7 | |
Bracers | 597 | Level 18 | |
Severed Threads | Ring | 541 | Level 2 |
Gem | 571 | Level 6 | |
Gem | 584 / 597 | Level 11 / 19 |
By building your reputation with these factions, you can gain valuable gear and items that will help enhance your character as you progress through The War Within.
PvP Gear
If you prefer battling other players instead of mobs, consider acquiring PvP gear. This type of equipment provides various bonuses when engaging in combat with the War Mode activated. You can also use this gear in Arenas, Rated Battlegrounds (RBGs), and other PvP activities.
With the launch of The War Within, the process for obtaining PvP gear remains largely unchanged. You will still need to visit dedicated vendors to purchase items using special PvP currency. Here’s what we know about the item levels for PvP gear so far:
Type of Play | Crafted Gear | Honor Gear | War Mode Gear | Conquest Gear |
---|---|---|---|---|
PvP | 606 | 619 | 629 | 632 |
PvE | 545 | 558 | 593 | 619 |
To purchase the gear you need, head to these PvP vendors located in Dornogal:
- Gilderann, War Mode Quartermaster
- Hotharn, Competitor’s Recipes
- Lalandi, Conquest Quartermaster
- Velerd, Honor Quartermaster
Additionally, you can enhance your PvP gear by buying the Vicious Jeweler’s Setting from Hotharn for extra sockets, allowing you to further customize your equipment.
Honor Gear
Your journey in PvP gear progression begins with acquiring Honor gear. To purchase items in this category, you’ll need to accumulate enough Honor currency. Keep in mind that the item level of Honor gear is lower in PvE (558) but higher in PvP (619). We recommend using this gear exclusively for player-versus-player combat to maximize the bonuses it provides.
Here are some examples of Honor gear available for purchase from Hotharn, along with the cost of each recipe:
- Design: Algari Competitor’s Amulet – 7500 Honor
- Pattern: Algari Competitor’s Cloth Hood – 7500 Honor
- Pattern: Algari Competitor’s Leather Belt – 7500 Honor
- Plans: Algari Competitor’s Plate Sabatons – 7500 Honor
- Schematic: Algari Competitor’s Cloth Bracers – 7500 Honor

Conquest Gear
Conquest gear is the next milestone in your PvP gearing progression in WoW The War Within. This gear is significantly more powerful than its Honor counterparts and can be upgraded up to nine times. You can purchase Conquest gear from Lalandi. Like Honor gear, it will have a lower item level in PvE (619) and a higher item level in PvP (632). To get the most out of this equipment, be sure to wear it exclusively for battling other players.
As always, Onlyfarms is here to help you acquire any amount of Conquest Points you need to enhance your PvP experience!
War Mode Gear
War Mode gear represents the pinnacle of PvP gear that you should aim for in The War Within. This gear is purchased using Bloody Tokens, which you can earn by participating in War Mode world quests, engaging in battles with War Mode activated, and through other sources. To exchange your tokens for gear, speak to Gilderann in Dornogal.
Here are some examples of War Mode gear available for purchase from Gilderann, along with the cost for each item:
- Forged Warmonger’s Gloves – 700 Bloody Tokens
- Forged Warmonger’s Bindings – 700 Bloody Tokens
- Forged Warmonger’s Hood – 700 Bloody Tokens
- Forged Warmonger’s Cuirass – 700 Bloody Tokens
- Forged Warmonger’s Greaves – 700 Bloody Tokens
- Forged Warmonger’s Drape – 700 Bloody Tokens
- Forged Warmonger’s Spire – 700 Bloody Tokens
- Forged Warmonger’s Hammer – 700 Bloody Tokens
Once again, if you need to gather Bloody Tokens quickly, Onlyfarms can assist you in acquiring as many as you wish. The best PvP gear is just a few clicks away!
Weekly Cache Rewards
Engaging in various activities to earn a Weekly Cache can also yield valuable gear, specifically the Veteran gear type. To obtain it, you’ll need to complete several activities, including:
- Earthen Theater
- Awakening The Machine
- Worldsoul: Spreading the Light
- Azj-Kahet Pacts
- Special Assignment World Quests
- Major weekly quests in the capital city
A crucial piece of advice is not to save your Weekly Caches for later. The loot you receive is fixed at the time you earn the cache and will not improve over time. It’s best to open it right away to give yourself a small boost in your progression through The War Within.
Additionally, opening Weekly Caches can reward you with 100 Coffer Key Shards each. You can use these shards to craft a Restored Coffer Key, which is useful for Bountiful Delves later on.
