Character Boosts in Midnight: Level 70 or Level 80
Updated 12 October 2026 for Midnight patch 12.1.
Since Midnight pre-orders began in August 2025, the boost that comes with the expansion is the Enhanced Level 80 Character Boost. The level 70 boost from Dragonflight is no longer what you buy, but players who still hold an unused one can use it: Blizzard says a higher-level boost does not replace an unused lower one. Here is how the two compare.
| Level 80 boost (current) | Level 70 boost (older) | |
|---|---|---|
| Gets you to | Level 80 | Level 70 |
| Gear | Item level 102. The gear cannot be upgraded or used at the Catalyst | Item level 424 as listed on the Warcraft Wiki. Midnight’s stat squish changed item level numbers, so check your tooltips |
| Where you start | Hearthstone set to Dornogal. First quest: Something on the Horizon | Teleport to the flightmaster platform in Valdrakken. First quest: A Sentinel’s Summon |
| Extras | Skyriding mounts if you don’t have them, all Khaz Algar flight paths, maximum renown with five War Within factions, 5,000 Resonance Crystals, 5,000 Kej, a Pristine Survival Kit with 5,000 gold, and an Adventurer’s Footlocker | Not itemized in the sources we checked |
| Next step | Midnight intro questline needs level 78, so you can start it at once | You need levels 70 to 78 before the Midnight intro opens |
Blizzard’s support page lists the Enhanced Level 80 boost with the base, Heroic and Epic editions of Midnight. One boost is included with the expansion; more can be bought in the in-game shop, which the Warcraft Wiki lists at $60 / £40.
How to Use the Boost
- Find the token. The boost appears as a token on the character-select screen. You can hold it for as long as you like.
- Pick a character. Click the token, then choose the character. The boost is irreversible, so decide on the class and race first.
- Confirm. Accept the warnings and wait for the character to load at the new location.
- Do the first quest. Level 80: Something on the Horizon in Dornogal. Level 70: A Sentinel’s Summon in Valdrakken.
Restrictions listed on the Warcraft Wiki
- You cannot boost a character that holds a WoW Token in its inventory, bank or mailbox.
- Your quest log is cleared and quest progress is lost.
- Character services are blocked for 72 hours after the boost (Error 20078).
- Dungeons and raids from older expansions are locked for 24 hours.
- Allied races do not receive their Heritage Armor from the boost.
What to Do After the Boost: Level 70 or 80 to 90
A boost is only the start. The level cap in Midnight is 90, and Icy Veins puts the XP needed for levels 80 to 90 at 4,963,065 in total.
| Stage | What to do |
|---|---|
| Level 70 to 78 | The War Within zones in Khaz Algar: Isle of Dorn, The Ringing Deeps, Hallowfall and Azj-Kahet. Chromie Time ends at 70 according to Icy Veins, and at 70 an expedited story mode for The War Within catches you up on the plot before Midnight |
| Level 78 | Needed to start the Midnight intro questline |
| Level 80 to 90 | The Midnight campaign has 17 chapters and takes you close to 90. Zones in order: Eversong Woods (80 to 82), then Zul’Aman, Harandar and the Eastern Kingdoms Arator questline (82 to 88), and Voidstorm (88 to 90) |
| Level 90 | Season 2 gear: Heroic dungeons need item level 266, and Raid Finder averages 276. See the gearing guide |
Wowhead’s alt route from March 2026 reached 90 in 4 to 5 hours with Delver’s Call quests and War Mode, against 8 hours or more for a first character’s campaign (figures from before patch 12.1). The full route is in our fast leveling guide. New to Midnight? Start with the beginner guide, and for class details use the Rogue or Warlock leveling guides.
Boost or Leveling Service?
Blizzard’s boost is the cheapest choice when you already own one. It is free with the expansion and keeps the rest of the game in your hands. Its limits are that it stops at level 80 (or 70), only one is included with the expansion (more cost real money in the shop), and the gear it gives cannot be upgraded.
| If you… | Better choice |
|---|---|
| Have an unused boost and want to play the Midnight story yourself | Use the boost, then level from 80 or 78 |
| Want to try a new class before committing | Use the free boost on the class you like most, or level it normally |
| Need a character at 90 without playing the levels, or several characters | A leveling service. Our Midnight leveling product page lists the level ranges it covers |
