Five Specs Worth Learning in Midnight Season 2

Rankings here are a snapshot from early October 2026, checked on 12 October for patch 12.1 (Season 2). The 13 October patch 12.1.5 can move them.

This is a gameplay pick, not a tier list. The five specs below got the biggest redesigns in Midnight and are the ones players ask about most when choosing a main: Devourer Demon Hunter, Frost Mage, Affliction Warlock, Outlaw Rogue and Survival Hunter. For the raw rankings of all 27 DPS specs, see our Midnight DPS tier list.

Top 5 DPS Specs to Main in WoW Midnight

Where the five stand in early October 2026

Spec Mythic+ (Icy Veins, 6 Oct) Mythic+ (Method, 5 Oct) Mythic+ (wow.gg rank of 27) Raid (Icy Veins, 24 Sep) Heroic raid (wow.gg rank of 27)
Outlaw Rogue S A 17 (322K) B 23 (248K)
Devourer Demon Hunter A+ A 11 (345K) B 15 (267K)
Survival Hunter A B 23 (297K) B 26 (238K)
Affliction Warlock B C 20 (314K) A 22 (250K)
Frost Mage B B 26 (282K) A 18 (259K)

wow.gg ranks specs by the average damage of the top 100 players per dungeon (Mythic+, week 8, 10 October) and by Heroic raid logs; the figure in brackets is average DPS. Icy Veins and Method are expert opinions. The two methods disagree, and that is the honest read of the data: Outlaw and Devourer are comfortable Mythic+ picks on every list, while Frost, Affliction and Survival sit in the lower half of the logs and ask more from the player. Icy Veins and Method both say the better player matters more than the better spec.

Devourer – The New Spec Leading the Future of WoW Design

Devourer is the third Demon Hunter spec and the only new spec of Midnight. It is built around Void Metamorphosis windows: you transform, fire off a fixed sequence of abilities, and leave the form on purpose.

How it plays

  • Two hero talent trees. Annihilator is the caster-style tree that stacks Voidfall and bursts with Reap; in Season 2 it is behind in nearly every situation except very high target counts. Void-Scarred packs quick bursts into each Void Metamorphosis and mixes in melee abilities, so you step in and out of close range. Icy Veins rates Void-Scarred as the strongest tree in all content.
  • Strict windows. The Void-Scarred opener transforms as fast as possible, triggers every Voidsurge, then lets the form expire naturally while you avoid picking up Souls and avoid casting Collapsing Star on the way out.
  • Apex talent: Collapsing Star. The first point makes Collapsing Star always critically strike. Points two and three add 3% Cosmic damage each and extra crit damage on the Star. The fourth point gives five Soul Fragments and immediate access to Collapsing Star every time you enter Void Metamorphosis.

Season 2 tier set

The 2-piece gives Reap a 20% chance, when it harvests 4 or more Soul Fragments, to make your next Consume instant and explode in a Soulburst. The 4-piece makes Soulburst generate 2 Soul Fragments and Reap deal 10% more damage. After the 18 August tuning, Icy Veins treats it as a passive bonus except in single-target.

The 6 October hotfix raised Devourer abilities by 8% and The Hunt and Voidblade by 10%, so numbers from before that date understate the spec. Hero talents, Apex talents and the tier set come together in the tier set guide.

Frost Mage – A Rework That Reinvents the Spec

Frost Mage no longer plays around Shatter in the old sense. The core of the Midnight version is a debuff called Freezing.

How it plays

  • Freezing stacks on the target from most of your spells and caps at 20; Icy Veins notes you will routinely overcap and that this is unavoidable.
  • Ice Lance triggers Shatter. Casting it with Fingers of Frost makes it hit as if it consumed the maximum stacks, even on a target with none. Shatter damages the target and, at a lower amount, nearby enemies; it also fires on a dying target through Winter’s End.
  • Frostbolt builds, Brain Freeze resets Flurry. The basic loop is to spam Frostbolt until a proc appears, then spend it.
  • Ray of Frost is the main cooldown, a 4-second channel every minute that stacks Freezing on each tick. With the Comet Storm talent it turns into a second cast that consumes Freezing on every target it hits. Cone of Frost adds several stacks in an area.
  • Hero trees: Spellslinger is Icy Veins’ best choice for single-target; Frostfire is the other tree.

Season 2 tier set

Both bonuses are passive. With two pieces, Shattering a Freezing stack has a 4% chance to produce an Icicle, and Glacial Spike deals 20% more damage. With four pieces, Glacial Spike can add 5 Icicles over 1 second and Shatter hits 5% harder. Neither one changes your rotation; they only change how often Glacial Spike is ready.

Frost is rated better for raid (Icy Veins A) than for keys (Icy Veins and Method B, rank 26 on wow.gg), so choose it for the gameplay rather than for Mythic+.

Affliction Warlock – Returning to Its DoT Roots

Affliction is back to stacking damage over time and watching the target melt. What it actually plays like in Season 2:

How it plays

  • Unstable Affliction is the shard spender. The opener applies Agony and Corruption, casts Unstable Affliction until you have 2 Soul Shards, casts Dark Harvest, summons Darkglare, and then spends every shard on Unstable Affliction while Malefic Grasp channels for the rest of the window.
  • Seed of Corruption is the AoE shard spender, and the 4-piece set turns on the Unstable Affliction talents during AoE while you spend shards on Seed.
  • Summon Darkglare is the main cooldown. It amplifies your DoTs, so you pool shards before it and refresh Agony early (inside the Pandemic window) so it is fully extended when Darkglare lands. Baseline Darkglare works on a single target; Nether Plating extends it to 5 targets.
  • Pandemic lets you refresh a DoT below 30% of its duration without losing time. Safe windows are 5.4 seconds for Agony and 4.2 seconds for Corruption, or 4.5 and 3.5 seconds with Creeping Death.
  • Hero trees: Soul Harvester is the best choice in single-target and AoE; Hellcaller is the alternative.

Season 2 tier set

The 2-piece raises Corruption and Agony damage. Icy Veins calls both bonuses “not particularly strong” and passive, so they do not change your priorities.

By the logs, Affliction is a raid spec (Icy Veins A) more than a keys spec (Method C, Icy Veins B). That is the opposite of the pre-launch hope that its AoE would make it a Mythic+ favourite.

Outlaw Rogue – Surprisingly Fun After Major Changes

Outlaw kept its chaotic proc-driven loop and is the strongest of the five in Mythic+ right now (Icy Veins S, Method A). The change that matters most is the rework of Roll the Bones.

Roll the Bones in Midnight

Roll the Bones now gives you a stage from 1 to 4, and each stage keeps every bonus of the stages below it:

Stage Bonus Approximate chance*
1 Sinister Strike has a 20% higher chance to strike twice and grant Opportunity 55%
2 Sinister Strike and Ambush generate 1 extra combo point and deal 15% more damage 30%
3 Restless Blades cooldown reduction increased by 30% 10%
4 Critical strike chance +10% 5%

*Icy Veins’ estimate of the current odds. Because most of the power sits in stages 1 and 2, which are also the most common results, you no longer reroll obsessively.

Rest of the loop

  • Open from Stealth, then Adrenaline Rush, Roll the Bones and Slice and Dice just before the pull.
  • Build combo points with Sinister Strike; use Between the Eyes at 6 or more points. An Ace Up Your Sleeve proc can reset Between the Eyes, which adds a little randomness to the opener.
  • Adrenaline Rush also lowers the global cooldown with your Haste (down to 0.8 seconds), so overcapping Energy while it is active is normal.
  • Hero trees: Trickster is the best choice for raid and Mythic+; Fatebound is the alternative.

The Season 2 tier set has no effect on the rotation. It only raises damage and smooths the flow.

Survival Hunter – A Complete Reinvention

Survival is a melee Hunter whose loop is built around Tip of the Spear and a new shotgun ability, Boomstick.

How it plays

  • Kill Command, then two tipped abilities. Kill Command grants Tip of the Spear (2 stacks with Primal Surge), and most of your abilities should be “tipped”. The flow is Kill Command, two tipped abilities by priority, repeat.
  • Boomstick is cast on cooldown. In the AoE priority it sits right after Kill Command, ahead of Wildfire Bomb.
  • Wildfire Bomb explodes in a cone behind the target and in a small circle around it, so positioning against spread packs matters in Mythic+. Prefer targets marked by Sentinel.
  • Takedown is the main cooldown: a 1:30 cooldown (1 minute with 2 points in Savagery) that deals heavy damage and then adds 20% damage and doubles auto-attack speed for only 8 seconds. Short window, so on-use trinkets with long durations fit poorly.
  • Hero trees: Sentinel is the best choice in single-target and AoE; Pack Leader is the alternative.

Season 2 tier set

The 2-piece makes Mongoose Fury increase Wildfire Bomb damage by 10%. The 4-piece makes each Boomstick blast extend Mongoose Fury by 1 second and increases its effects by 10%. Icy Veins notes nothing changes in practice because Bomb is already used on cooldown.

Survival sits in the lower half of both Mythic+ and raid logs (rank 23 and 26), though Icy Veins keeps it at A in keys. It is a spec you pick for its identity.

Preparing for Midnight’s Economy and Progression

Whichever spec you choose, the gear plan for Season 2 is the same. Four of the five tier slots complete the 4-piece set, and the Catalyst now keeps the secondary stats of the item you convert, so convert the piece with the best stats. Our Midnight gearing guide shows where every item level comes from, and the tier set guide covers tokens and Catalyst charges.

Gold pays for flasks, potions, enchants and crafted pieces. If you would rather buy it than farm it, check WoW gold on Onlyfarms; our solo gold farm guide covers the free route.

A melee Hunter with a clear priority list Survival Hunter

FAQ

Are these the best five DPS specs in Midnight? No. They are the five most reworked and most asked about. In the 10 October wow.gg Mythic+ ranking the top three were Demonology Warlock, Unholy Death Knight and Assassination Rogue.

Which of the five is best for Mythic+? Outlaw Rogue on expert lists (Icy Veins S, Method A) and Devourer on the logs (rank 11 of 27 on wow.gg).

Which is best for raiding? Frost Mage and Affliction Warlock are rated A by Icy Veins for raid damage; Heroic logs put Frost 18th and Affliction 22nd of 27, so differences are small.

Will this change after 12.1.5? It can. Blizzard’s 12.1.5 post lists no class changes, but weekly hotfixes keep moving numbers, and we re-check the table after each patch.
