WoW Catalyst Guide

Table of contents

The Catalyst system in The War Within gives players the ability to
transform regular gear into tier set pieces.
This feature is a cornerstone of character progression, as tier sets provide
powerful class-specific bonuses that can significantly boost performance
in both PvE and PvP.

Beyond raw power upgrades, the Catalyst also plays a vital role in transmog collection.
For many players, it’s the most reliable way to complete their tier set appearances
without relying purely on random raid drops.

✨ Onlyfarms Tip: Use the Catalyst regularly to stay on top of both performance upgrades
and transmog collections. It’s the safest path to completing your tier set.

What is Catalyst in The War Within?

The Catalyst is a special console located in Dornogal that allows you to
convert eligible gear into tier set pieces.
For example, if you have a pair of dungeon or PvP shoulders, you can bring them to the Catalyst and transform them into
your class’s tier shoulders. The new item keeps the same item level and upgrade track,
but also gains the tier appearance and contributes to your set bonus.

In short, it’s protection against bad loot luck.
Not every player raids every week, and even raiders can go weeks without receiving the piece they need.
The Catalyst ensures you can complete your tier set regardless of raid RNG.
It’s especially valuable for Mythic+ players, PvPers, and outdoor adventurers, giving them access to the same bonuses raiders enjoy.

Where to Find Catalyst in The War Within

In The War Within, the Catalyst is located in Dornogal, the main hub city of the expansion. On the map, you’ll find the console near the city’s center, around coordinates 50, 54. Once you know the spot, it’s easy to locate, and the console remains active as soon as the season begins.

Unlike some previous expansions where the Catalyst was added mid-season, in The War Within it is available from the very start of Season 3. This gives players immediate access to the system while progressing through the new raid, Mythic+ dungeons, and the PvP season. Once you’ve unlocked it, you can revisit Dornogal anytime to convert eligible gear, provided you have charges available.

How to Get Catalyst in The War Within

If you want to convert a piece of gear into tier, you spend one charge of the Catalyst.
At the start of Season 3, every character begins with one charge automatically.
After that, a new charge is added every two weeks.

📌 There is no way to speed up this process other than one seasonal bonus charge.

Charges are capped at eight,
meaning if you do not use them, they will accumulate only up to that point.
For players managing multiple characters, it is worth logging into each alt periodically
to ensure they are collecting charges even if you are not actively gearing them yet.

Bonus Catalyst in The War Within

There is one way to gain an extra Catalyst charge outside the normal schedule.
This comes from the

The War Within Season 3: Voidborne Victor
achievement.

Completing any one of its requirements rewards you with a

Crystallized Ethereal Voidsplinter
,
which functions as an additional Catalyst charge.

📌 To earn the bonus charge, you only need to complete one of the endgame objectives tied to this achievement.

Which Gear Slots Work with the Catalyst?

The Catalyst system is centered around tier sets, and only specific gear slots
contribute directly to your set bonuses.
In The War Within, only the five traditional tier slots matter
for unlocking your 2-piece and 4-piece set effects:

  1. Legs
  2. Hands
  3. Helm
  4. Shoulders
  5. Chest

📌 Converting gear in these slots with the Catalyst will count toward your class tier set bonus.
The tooltip also tracks your progress, so you’ll always know how close you are to unlocking
the 2-piece and 4-piece effects.

Other armor slots can be catalyzed, but they don’t provide any power gains.
Instead, these conversions are purely cosmetic. Bracers, belts, boots, and cloaks
can be transformed into pieces that match your class tier appearance —
perfect for completing your transmog look.

These cosmetic items won’t count toward your set bonus,
so it’s best to use them once your tier effects are secured.
For transmog collectors, this is one of the easiest ways
to finish a full class set without relying solely on raid drops.

Catalyst and Cloaks in Season 3

Cloaks are handled a little differently in The War Within Season 3.
The only cloak available this season is the

Reshii Wraps
— an artifact cloak that cannot be catalyzed.

To unlock the actual tier cloak appearances, you’ll need to take part in the
Manaforge Omega raid and progress through the Manaforge Vandals renown track.
📌 This separation means cloaks are tied to raid progression, even though the Catalyst covers most other slots.

🎨 The Catalyst is still your main safety net for completing tier sets.
Instead of waiting on raid RNG, you can upgrade existing gear into set pieces and
secure your 2-piece and 4-piece bonuses on your own schedule.

On top of that, it’s a fantastic way to expand your transmog collection.
If you plan your charges wisely and focus on the slots you need most,
gearing in Season 3 becomes smoother and far less stressful.
