Gold Exchange!

Recently, an announcement by the developers regarding the prohibition of gold exchange between different game worlds, factions, and various versions of WoW has stirred quite a discussion and raised questions among community members. This is particularly concerning the modern version of the game, where cross-server play and trade have been available for a long time. Shortly thereafter, the authors updated the note, providing some clarifications. It turns out such exchanges are only prohibited within WoW Classic, while in the modern WoW, these activities remain permissible.

The updated version of the support article now states:

Exchange of gold between different game worlds, factions, or versions of WoW (modern and classic)

Gold exchange between different game worlds or factions in WoW Classic or between different versions of WoW (modern and classic) is prohibited. Such exchanges, especially with individuals you do not know or trust, are often linked to gold selling, which leads to issues with game world economies, bot usage, and account theft. Participating in such exchanges can result in actions against your account, up to and including closure. However, exchanges within the game systems, such as cross-faction or cross-server exchanges in modern WoW, are allowed.

In a discussion on the official forum, a support representative provided some additional clarifications:

Can we get some clarification regarding the updated policy?

Essentially, if it’s a supported transaction (i.e., using in-game systems for the exchange), it is still permitted. However, if it is not a supported transaction (which means exchanging gold between different versions of the game or other game worlds/factions, etc.), it is now prohibited.

Guilds in the modern WoW are cross-server and cross-faction, so exchanges within them use regular in-game systems. However, the restrictions apply to the exchange of gold between game worlds, factions, and versions of games, which cannot be conducted using in-game methods.

The representative also noted the following:

  • Players continue to have the ability to exchange gold with one another, give and receive gifts, and sell or buy items during raids (excluding GDKP raids) by utilizing in-game systems such as the trade window, mail, and other methods.
  • Transferring gold through the auction house is not a supported action. However, if a player is transferring gold between their own accounts, it generally does not result in any penalties.
  • Codes for obtaining in-game items or game time are considered out-of-game systems and cannot be exchanged for in-game gold. If a code provides a tradable in-game item, that item can be sold for gold.
  • Exchanges involving any items or services outside the game for in-game gold are not supported.
  • Developers possess methods to track unauthorized “gifts,” such as when someone receives gold in exchange for real money. For instance, it’s suspicious when a level 10 character on a new account exchanges large amounts of gold with strangers.
