There will be no pet battles in World of Warcraft: Midnight — Blizzard has officially confirmed the removal of one of the community’s most beloved features after more than 13 years in the game.
The news broke through a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) by World of Warcraft content creator MrGM, where he revealed that the long-standing battle pet system will be drastically changed in the upcoming expansion.
“In Midnight zones, battle pets won’t require battling to capture. Just throw a trap and they’re yours. This only applies to Midnight pets — older zones still require battles to capture them.”
Developers have confirmed that all new pets introduced with WoW: Midnight will have zero combat stats. This means they cannot participate in pet battles of any kind. However, you’ll still be able to collect wild pets using traps, functioning more like collectibles than companions for combat.
This change marks a major shift in how Blizzard approaches the collectible side of WoW gameplay. While the traditional pet battle system remains for legacy content, Midnight’s new design moves away from turn-based combat toward pure collection — a direction that’s left the player base both surprised and divided.
