Key Takeaways
Subtlety used to be the PvP tree of Classic. WoW Forever leaves its opening toolkit, the strongest of any Rogue spec, in place and adds a real set of PvE talents on top. Here is the short version before the talents, rotation and gear.
- Core loop: you work from Stealth, start with Garrote, generate Combo Points through Hemorrhage and cash them in on Rupture and Slice and Dice.
- Hemorrhage: 100% weapon damage, or 145% when you hold a dagger, plus a 15 sec debuff that raises your Rupture damage on that target by 15%.
- New capstone: with Thousand Cuts, every Rupture tick shaves 3 Energy off your next Hemorrhage or Backstab, for up to 5 stacks.
- Easier openers: Premeditation no longer asks for Stealth and gives you 20 sec to spend its 2 Combo Points, and a Sap leaves you hidden, so dungeon pulls stay in your hands.
- PvP picks: both popular Rogue PvP gear lists are Subtlety, one on daggers and Ambush, one on Hemorrhage with a slow main hand; the leading races are Human and Orc, and Undead brings Will of the Forsaken against fears.
- Main weakness: in PvE, enemies that cannot bleed shut off a big part of your damage.
Note: Before launch, characters stop at level 30. The level 30 builds and gear in this guide come from the newest build, and the level 60 talents come from the full Patch 1.60.1 data, so treat those numbers as beta values that can still change.
Best Subtlety Rogue Builds
You need to know three builds: a PvE one built on Hemorrhage and two for PvP. The level 30 point totals assume Talented at 5/5, a Legacy perk that hands out talent points starting at level 5, while the level 20 build is counted without it.
Before you spend any points, decide what you want from the character. If your plan is dungeon damage, follow the Hemorrhage route. If battlegrounds are the plan, choose one of the two PvP builds: the dagger one for burst or the Hemorrhage one for steady damage from any side. Treat the first choice as a direction and revisit it when your level and goals change.
See how the damage specs compare in the WoW Forever DPS ranking.
Level 20 Subtlety Rogue Build
Your level 20 build spends 11 points and is all about Ambush.
| Talent | Ranks | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Master of Deception | 3/3 | Stealth as if you were 3 levels higher |
| Opportunity | 2/2 | 10% more Ambush and Garrote damage |
| Improved Ambush | 3/3 | 45% more Ambush crit chance |
| Improved Sinister Strike | 2/2 | Cheaper builder after the opener |
| Malice | 1/5 | 1% crit |
Hold a dagger while you set up the Ambush, then change to a slower main hand and use Sinister Strike until Hemorrhage is trained. Sinister Strike benefits from a weapon whose maximum damage is high, so the swap is worth the extra click.
Level 30 Subtlety Rogue Build
For PvE at level 30, use the 26-point version below. The popular Subtlety lists only cover PvP, so this one is the PvE pick.
| Talent | Ranks |
|---|---|
| Malice (Assassination) | 2/5 |
| Master of Deception | 3/3 |
| Opportunity | 2/2 |
| Setup | 3/3 |
| Elusiveness | 2/2 |
| Dirty Tricks | 2/2 |
| Initiative | 3/3 |
| Ghostly Strike | 1/1 |
| Premeditation | 1/1 |
| Serrated Blades | 3/3 |
| Dirty Deeds | 2/2 |
| Preparation | 1/1 |
| Hemorrhage | 1/1 |
Your Talented bonus points go to Dirty Deeds. That lowers Garrote to 30 Energy and removes the need to stand behind the target; with Initiative adding its Combo Points, each of the 2 points costs you 15 Energy. Elusiveness and Preparation give you more chances to repeat it.
Playing without Talented? Then the 21-point build drops Malice, Ghostly Strike, Dirty Deeds and Preparation, then spends 1 point on Camouflage instead. In both versions, five talents are must-haves: Opportunity, Initiative, Premeditation, Serrated Blades and Hemorrhage.
As a rule of thumb, the five mandatory talents give you the opener and the finisher engine, and everything else is comfort: smoother Energy, a stronger stealth window, and more resets. If you ever have to cut points, cut comfort first.
Subtlety Rogue Endgame Build
The build most players pick at level 60 is 16/12/23, an Ambush build tuned for burst. From Assassination it borrows Cold Blood and Lethality, and from Combat it takes Puncturing Wounds.
| Talent | Tree | Ranks |
|---|---|---|
| Improved Gouge | Assassination (16) | 3/3 |
| Malice | Assassination (16) | 5/5 |
| Murder | Assassination (16) | 2/2 |
| Relentless Strikes | Assassination (16) | 1/1 |
| Lethality | Assassination (16) | 4/5 |
| Cold Blood | Assassination (16) | 1/1 |
| Improved Eviscerate | Combat (12) | 3/3 |
| Improved Sinister Strike | Combat (12) | 2/2 |
| Puncturing Wounds | Combat (12) | 3/3 |
| Precision | Combat (12) | 2/3 |
| Improved Sprint | Combat (12) | 2/2 |
| Camouflage | Subtlety (23) | 3/5 |
| Master of Deception | Subtlety (23) | 3/3 |
| Opportunity | Subtlety (23) | 2/2 |
| Dirty Tricks | Subtlety (23) | 2/2 |
| Improved Ambush | Subtlety (23) | 3/3 |
| Initiative | Subtlety (23) | 2/3 |
| Heightened Senses | Subtlety (23) | 2/2 |
| Premeditation | Subtlety (23) | 1/1 |
| Serrated Blades | Subtlety (23) | 2/3 |
| Dirty Deeds | Subtlety (23) | 2/2 |
| Preparation | Subtlety (23) | 1/1 |
Two talents are absent here: Hemorrhage and Thousand Cuts. In other words, the popular way to play Subtlety at 60 is a PvP spec with dagger burst. Reaching Thousand Cuts in a deep PvE build takes 30 points in the Subtlety tree, which means nobody can test or rate it before the level cap moves past 30.
Subtlety Rogue Rotation
The rotation starts with Garrote from Stealth, builds Combo Points with Hemorrhage, and spends them on Slice and Dice and then Rupture or Eviscerate. When the first Garrote has run out, Vanish and Preparation let you open again.
Think of the rotation as a loop with two layers. The inner layer is the Energy loop of builders and finishers. The outer layer is the Stealth loop, where Vanish and Preparation restart the opener. Players who only watch the inner layer lose a lot of the spec’s strength.
Single-Target Rotation
At level 30 the single-target priority looks like this:
- Open with Garrote from Stealth every time. It applies a bleed and, thanks to Initiative, gives you 2 Combo Points.
- Keep Slice and Dice active to hold its 20% attack speed bonus.
- Use Vanish and Preparation to cast Garrote again after it has expired, because Vanish puts you back into Stealth.
- Apply Expose Armor when the group is physical-heavy and the fight is long.
- Put surplus Combo Points into Rupture against high-armor targets and into Eviscerate against low-armor ones.
- Use Hemorrhage as the filler builder; it also adds 15% to your Rupture damage.
That 15% Rupture bonus is the reason Rupture is the finisher of choice whenever the target has high armor.
Subtlety Rogue Openers
Which opener you choose depends on what you want from the fight:
- PvE: start with Garrote, which gives 2 Combo Points through Initiative, then add Premeditation for a 4-point Slice and Dice almost right away.
- Dagger burst: Ambush with Improved Ambush, the heart of the dagger PvP build.
- Control: open with Cheap Shot and chain into Kidney Shot; Premeditation provides the Combo Points so the Kidney Shot comes quickly.
A quick example makes the flow clear. You start in Stealth and cast Garrote, which gives 2 Combo Points through Initiative. You add Premeditation for 2 more, and a 4-point Slice and Dice follows almost at once. After that you settle into Hemorrhage and spend extra points on Rupture or Eviscerate, depending on armor.
Energy Management
Talents ease your Energy problems. With Dirty Deeds, Garrote and Cheap Shot get cheap, and once you reach 60, Thousand Cuts will lower what Hemorrhage costs. Before that, Thistle Tea restores 100 Energy for a big opener.
Tip: In a dungeon, a Vanish followed by Cheap Shot or Kidney Shot can stand in as a backup interrupt. You can also Sap a dangerous caster before the pull while you stay hidden.
Subtlety Rogue Stat Priority
What you stack depends on the build. PvE wants the weapon first, followed by Agility and Hit, while the PvP lists rank Stamina above Agility. For the Hemorrhage list you want a slow sword, mace or axe, since Hemorrhage and Ghostly Strike can be used from any side; the dagger list asks for a dagger to use Backstab and Ambush.
- Main-hand weapon: slow for Hemorrhage builds, a dagger for Ambush builds.
- Off hand: whichever weapon gives you the most Attack Power.
- Agility: it adds Attack Power as well as crit chance, and Attack Power is what Rupture scales with.
- Stamina: the second stat on both PvP gear lists, so it matters more in PvP than in PvE.
- Hit: it reduces missed openers, and a miss burns your Stealth window for nothing.
Best Subtlety Rogue Gear
At the level 30 cap, the Hemorrhage gear list is your pick, because it lines up with the PvE Hemorrhage build. It was put together for PvP, the area where Subtlety is strongest, yet it also works well in dungeons.
| Slot | Subtlety Rogue BiS | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Head | Brawler’s Leather Helm | Bosses in several level 20–30 dungeons |
| Neck | Ghostshard Talisman / Souvenir Sea Shell | Graveyard (Scarlet Monastery) / Booty Bay vendor, Honored |
| Shoulder | Unstable Crystalline Shoulderpads | Unstable Sentinel, City of Dalaran |
| Back | Tigerstrike Mantle | World drop |
| Chest | Raptor Hunter Tunic | Quest Raptor Mastery, from level 28 |
| Wrist | Unearthed Bands of the Bandit / Barbaric Bracers | Uldaman trash / Leatherworking (130) |
| Hands | Razzeric’s Racing Grips / Ebon Vise | Quest Safety First / Fallen Champion, Scarlet Monastery |
| Waist | Warden’s Leather Belt / Skulker’s Leather Belt | Leatherworking (150), crafter only |
| Legs | Triprunner Dungarees / Panther Hunter Leggings | Quests Rig Wars / Panther Mastery |
| Feet | Shapeshifting Sentinel’s Strides for Horde / Ghostwalker Boots of the Bandit | Horde only / world drop |
| Finger | Wyvern Heart Band / Determined Band | Heartrazor in Thousand Needles / No Honor Among Thieves quest |
| Trinket | Mechanical Dragonling / Gnomish Net-o-Matic Projector | Engineering (200 / 210) |
| Main Hand | Ruby-Adorned Blade | Rogue quest The Eye of Bhossca |
| Off Hand | Bloody Brass Knuckles | Interrogator Vishas, Scarlet Monastery Graveyard |
| Ranged | Gravespike Repeater | Atrexis the Grave Knight, City of Dalaran |
The dagger PvP list puts a dagger in the main hand instead: Silent Hunter for Horde, Subdued Dragon’s Fang for Alliance, or Thornspike from Razorfen Kraul. Each of them is there for Backstab and Ambush.
Treat the table as a shopping list rather than a checklist. Many slots offer two options, and which one you take depends on whether you have the profession or can run the quest. Start with the slots that have a quest or dungeon source that you pass anyway, and leave crafter-only pieces until you have the skill.
Pre-Raid and Raid BiS
Every Rogue spec shares one tier set, Grimstitch Armor, so Subtlety uses it as well. Here is what each piece count unlocks:
| Pieces | Set Bonus |
|---|---|
| 2 | +1% Hit |
| 3 | Kidney Shot cooldown 3 sec shorter |
| 4 | +36 Attack Power against Humanoids |
| 5 | Eviscerate costs 5 Energy less |
The 3-piece bonus fits the control style of the spec well, since Kidney Shot is the second half of your Cheap Shot chain, while the Hit bonus helps your openers land.
Best Subtlety Rogue Weapons
Your weapon choice follows your opener. Here are the main candidates:
- Ruby-Adorned Blade: the Hemorrhage main hand, dealing 23.91 damage per second.
- City Guard’s Tarnished Blade: a sword with 2.50 speed that also appears on the list; where it drops is still unknown.
- Silent Hunter and Subdued Dragon’s Fang: daggers for Ambush and Backstab.
- Bloody Brass Knuckles: both lists use it in the off hand.
If you need upgrades from earlier dungeons first, a Shadowfang Keep run that goes all the way down to Arugal is one way to collect them and speed up your gearing.
Subtlety Rogue Abilities
Subtlety relies on Stealth more than either of the other Rogue specs. Its abilities sort into five groups: damage, defensives, cooldowns, utility and crowd control.
Subtlety Rogue Damage Abilities
These abilities make up the PvE rotation. Hemorrhage is the builder, while Rupture and Eviscerate are the finishers.
| Ability | Cost and Cooldown | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Hemorrhage | 35 Energy | Main builder; boosts your Rupture by 15% |
| Garrote | 50 Energy, or 30 with Dirty Deeds; Stealth only | Bleed opener; 2 Combo Points with Initiative |
| Rupture | 25 Energy | Go-to finisher against high armor; Serrated Blades makes it stronger |
| Slice and Dice | 25 Energy | 20% attack speed |
| Eviscerate | 35 Energy | Finisher on low-armor targets |
| Ambush | 60 Energy; dagger, from Stealth | Burst opener for dagger builds |
| Ghostly Strike | 40 Energy, 20 sec | Builder plus 15% Dodge for 7 sec |
Sorted by cost, Slice and Dice and Rupture are the cheapest at 25 Energy and keep your buff and bleed running, Hemorrhage and Eviscerate sit at 35, Ghostly Strike costs 40, and the two Stealth openers are the expensive ones: Garrote at 50 (30 with Dirty Deeds) and Ambush at 60. Plan your Energy so that an opener never has to wait.
Subtlety Rogue Cooldowns and Defensives
Resets and survival are where Subtlety shines. This is the set you will reach for:
- Premeditation: places 2 Combo Points on the target that are lost if you do not spend them within 20 sec; 2 min cooldown.
- Preparation: resets your other Rogue cooldowns, on a 10 min cooldown.
- Vanish: puts you back into Stealth so you can follow up with another Garrote or Cheap Shot. Elusiveness at 2/2 cuts its cooldown by 90 sec.
- Evasion and Feint: Evasion is your survival button, and Feint is the tool for controlling threat.
The two cooldowns that matter most are Premeditation and Preparation. The first gives you 2 Combo Points without needing Stealth, and the second lets you repeat a good opener when the first one is spent. Plan both into your openers and resets, so they are ready when a fight needs a second start.
Subtlety Rogue Utility
Almost everything in this group revolves around Stealth. The tools worth knowing:
- Stealth: with Camouflage at 5/5, the movement penalty shrinks by 15% and the cooldown by 6 sec.
- Distract (level 22): draws enemy attention away for 10 sec, and you stay in Stealth.
- Heightened Senses: you detect Stealth better, and at 2/2 spells and ranged attacks are 4% less likely to hit you.
- Expose Armor: worth bringing for physical-heavy groups on long fights.
- Pick Lock: now belongs to the Lockpicking secondary skill. It opens doors such as the one in front of Ironclad Cove in The Deadmines.
Subtlety Rogue Crowd Control
Stuns, one disorient, one incapacitate and one interrupt make up your control kit. Dirty Tricks lowers the cost of Sap and Blind, and Elusiveness has Blind ready more often.
| Ability | Effect |
|---|---|
| Sap | Humanoid outside combat, up to 25 sec; you stay in Stealth; Dirty Tricks halves the cost |
| Cheap Shot | 4 sec stun, Stealth only; worth 3 Combo Points with Initiative |
| Kidney Shot | Finisher; stuns for up to 5 sec on a 20 sec cooldown |
| Blind | Disorients for up to 10 sec; Elusiveness shortens the cooldown, Dirty Tricks the cost |
| Gouge | 4 sec incapacitate; longer with Improved Gouge |
| Kick | Interrupt and 5 sec school lockout |
Subtlety Rogue Leveling
Until Hemorrhage arrives, leveling revolves around Ambush and Sinister Strike, which is why the early build puts its points into Ambush talents. Open with a dagger and then fight with a slower main hand, because Sinister Strike prefers a weapon with a high top-end damage roll.
Leveling Build
With Talented, the leveling build hits these milestones:
| Level | Subtlety Milestone |
|---|---|
| 14–20 | Garrote (14) and Ambush (18); talents: Master of Deception, Opportunity, Improved Ambush |
| 22–26 | Vanish (22) and Cheap Shot (26); talents: Setup, Initiative, Premeditation |
| 30 | Kidney Shot; 26 points spent, adding Hemorrhage, Dirty Deeds and Preparation |
| 31–35 | Blind (34); Quietus or Cutthroat from the 25-point row, then Thousand Cuts once 30 points are in the tree |
| 36–60 | PvP players head for the 16/12/23 dagger build |
Leveling Rotation
Start in Stealth with Ambush and a dagger, swap weapons, and carry on with Sinister Strike and Eviscerate. When a pack of Humanoids stands in your way, Sap one of them before you open. It does not break Stealth, so splitting the group costs you nothing.
Tip: Vanish drops combat and breaks slows, which makes it the strongest cheat-death button a Rogue has. Keep it for the pull that goes wrong.
Your early kit leans on what you do from Stealth, so choose pulls you can start with Ambush, Garrote or Cheap Shot, and split bigger packs with Sap before you commit. If a pull still goes sideways, that is the moment for Vanish, not earlier, so you have it when it counts.
Subtlety Rogue Class Quests
Your class quests end with the Hemorrhage main hand. From level 25 you can take on The Eye of Bhossca, a solo, Stealth-focused quest inside Scarlet Monastery, and the Ruby-Adorned Blade it rewards ranks first on the Hemorrhage gear list. If you would rather not run it yourself, there is a class quests service for that.
Best Subtlety Rogue Consumables
Your consumables handle three jobs: burst, Energy and getting away. At level 60 the options get stronger, with better Agility and Attack Power items.
| Consumable Type | Subtlety Rogue Item | Main Use |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | Thistle Tea | 100 Energy for a big opener |
| Reagents | Flash Powder / Blinding Powder | Needed for Vanish and Blind |
| PvP Potion | Free Action Potion | Stun and slow immunity for 30 sec |
| Poisons | Crippling Poison / Instant Poison | PvP: slows runners / PvE: extra damage |
| Agility | Elixir of Agility / Scroll of Agility II | +15 / +9 Agility |
| Burst Potion | Frenzy Potion | +28 Attack Power for the opener |
| Level 60 | Elixir of the Mongoose / Major Frenzy Potion | +25 Agility, +2% crit / 30 sec of +80 Attack Power |
Battlegrounds burn through Free Action Potions and reagents quickly. Buying WoW Forever gold lets you restock without spending your evenings farming.
Best Subtlety Rogue Enchants
Enchants for Subtlety add Agility and weapon damage, with Stamina taking over in the slots where PvP asks for it.
| Gear Slot | Subtlety Rogue Enchant | Main Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Weapons | Enchant Weapon – Striking / Crusader | +3 damage / Strength proc and self-heal |
| Neck | Enchant Necklace – Agility | +5 Agility |
| Gloves | Enchant Gloves – Agility | +7 Agility |
| Boots | Enchant Boots – Lesser Agility / Enchant Boots – Stamina | PvE: +4 Agility / PvP: +5 Stamina |
| Chest | Enchant Chest – Lesser Stats | All stats |
| Back and Wrist | Enchant Cloak – Lesser Agility / Enchant Bracer – Minor Agility | +3 Agility each |
| Head, Legs, Shoulder (60) | Arcanum of Rapidity / Zandalar Signet of Might | +1% Haste / +30 Attack Power |
Best Subtlety Rogue Professions
For Subtlety, Engineering and Leatherworking come out on top. Each gear list takes its trinkets from Engineering, while Leatherworking makes the belts that are crafter-only. For camping, the strongest Rogue choices are the Lodestone, the Camp Chair and the Fish Bowl.
| Professions | Best Use |
|---|---|
| Engineering + Leatherworking | Warden’s Leather Belt, plus the Mechanical Dragonling and Gnomish Net-o-Matic Projector trinkets |
| Engineering + Mining | The PvP trinkets and the Lodestone |
| Skinning + Leatherworking | Leveling gear and the Camp Chair |
Subtlety Rogue Macros
Macros let you put Stealth openers and resets on one key. Type each one in exactly as shown, and test it before you trust it in a real fight.
Bind each macro to a key you can reach without moving your hand off the movement keys. The opener macro saves you a button, since it covers two abilities with one key, and the others solve specific problems in groups and in PvP.
Opener Macro
One key, two jobs: inside Stealth it casts Garrote, outside it casts Hemorrhage.
- #showtooltip
- /cast [stealth] Garrote; Hemorrhage
Premeditation Macro
This one spends Premeditation for 2 Combo Points first and then stuns with Cheap Shot.
- #showtooltip Cheap Shot
- /cast Premeditation
- /cast Cheap Shot
Blind Macro
With this focus macro, Blind goes on your focus, such as an enemy healer, or on your current target if you have no focus.
- #showtooltip Blind
- /cast [@focus,harm,nodead][] Blind
Sap Macro
Hover your cursor over an enemy and this mouseover macro casts Sap on it, leaving your main target as it is.
- #showtooltip Sap
- /cast [@mouseover,harm,nodead][] Sap
Subtlety Rogue PvP
In PvP, Subtlety lives on openers, resets and chains of control, and each of the two main Rogue PvP gear lists is built on it. Most fights start with Sap or Cheap Shot, use Premeditation to get a fast Kidney Shot, and close with Ambush or Hemorrhage damage while the target is still stunned.
If the fight swings the wrong way, Vanish, Blind and Preparation buy you a second opener. You spot other Rogues more easily with Heightened Senses, and Ghostly Strike gives 15% extra melee dodge. Getting good PvP gear early makes all of this easier, and an Honor boost can cover the Honor you need for it.
A simple routine helps in battlegrounds: look for a lone target first, control it, and only then commit your damage. If the fight stalls, step away with a reset and start again from a fresh opener instead of trading blows in the open.
To see how rogues stack up against other classes, read the WoW Forever best PvP classes tier list.
Subtlety Rogue PvP Talents
At level 30 you choose between two builds. The dagger build centers on Ambush, while the Hemorrhage build gives up some burst in return for steady damage from any side.
| Talent | Dagger Build | Hemorrhage Build |
|---|---|---|
| Improved Gouge | 3/3 | 2/3 |
| Camouflage | 4/5 | 4/5 |
| Opportunity / Master of Deception | Opportunity 2/2 | Master of Deception 3/3 |
| Elusiveness / Setup | Elusiveness 2/2 | Setup 3/3 |
| Dirty Tricks | 2/2 | 1/2 |
| Improved Ambush / Heightened Senses | Improved Ambush 3/3 | Heightened Senses 2/2 |
| Initiative, Ghostly Strike, Premeditation | 3/3, 1/1, 1/1 | 3/3, 1/1, 1/1 |
| Serrated Blades | 3/3 | 3/3 |
| Dirty Deeds | – | 1/2 |
| Preparation and Hemorrhage | 1/1 each | 1/1 each |
A solid build lets you win 1v1 fights and battlegrounds, and battlegrounds unlock plenty of rewards. Battleground reputation, for instance, opens PvP rewards and also moves your Legacy progress forward.
To sum up: Subtlety is still the PvP Rogue it always was, and it now has a PvE route built on Hemorrhage, Rupture and Thousand Cuts. Start fights with Garrote, keep both Slice and Dice and Rupture ticking, and lean on Vanish and Preparation for another opener. Whether your goal is battleground ranks or dungeon damage, begin with the level 30 Hemorrhage build.
Subtlety Rogue Overview
Subtlety is a bleed Rogue that runs on Combo Points. Hemorrhage generates them, Slice and Dice and Rupture are the effects you keep rolling on the target, and Vanish slips extra Stealth openers into a fight. No other Rogue spec saw as many talent changes, and once the whole kit is open it should hold its own in single-target damage.
One honest caveat first. The PvE talents of the spec are deep in the tree, so nobody can do more than guess at its PvE power until the cap goes beyond level 30 and those talents can be tested. The playstyle itself is already settled: Rupture is the finisher you lean on most, Hemorrhage makes it hit harder, and Thousand Cuts pays Energy back for as long as the bleed stays up. Since those PvE tools only arrive with levels, some players would rather skip the early grind, and a WoW Forever powerleveling service is one way to reach the deeper talents sooner.
If you have played Rogue before, think of Subtlety as the spec that rewards planning. You decide when to enter Stealth, which opener fits the target, and when a reset is worth its long cooldown. Players who like to prepare a pull in advance will feel at home, while those who prefer a simple button rotation may find the other Rogue trees more relaxed.

Subtlety Rogue Strengths and Weaknesses
Both columns of this table trace back to the same two pillars, bleeds and Stealth. They hand you steady damage and strong control, yet your damage only works while Rupture is actually ticking on the target.
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| Bleeds keep doing damage while you move or wait | Targets immune to bleeds take away a big share of your damage |
| The strongest opener and reset kit in Premeditation, Preparation and Vanish | Its PvE strength stays unproven until the deep talents are testable |
| Plenty of survival through Evasion, Ghostly Strike and Feint | Kicks and Expose Armor are all you add to a raid |
| Top-tier PvP control from Sap, Blind and Cheap Shot | Energy feels slow until Thousand Cuts is in your build |
Read the table as a trade-off. The strengths mostly concern control, survival and openers, which is why the spec is so popular in PvP. The weaknesses concern sustained PvE output: the damage depends on a bleed, and the deepest talents that improve Energy are not reachable yet. Plan your group role around that, and carry a plan for bleed-immune targets.
Best Race for Subtlety Rogue
For Subtlety, and for PvP in particular, Human and Orc are the races to beat. A Rogue can be a Gnome, Human, Dwarf, Night Elf or High Order Skyborne on the Alliance side, and a Troll, Orc, Undead or Windshaper Skyborne on the Horde side.
| Race | Faction | Subtlety Value |
|---|---|---|
| Human | Alliance | Stuns are broken by Will to Survive, Perception reveals other Rogues, and Ruthless gives 2% crit. |
| Gnome | Alliance | Escape Artist now removes slows and adds 3 sec of immunity, while Eureka! strengthens a burst window. |
| Orc | Horde | Hardiness makes stuns 20% shorter, and Blood Fury strengthens an opener. |
| Undead | Horde | Will of the Forsaken gets you out of Charm, Fear and Sleep; it has a 2 min cooldown. |
The other races have smaller perks. Night Elf brings Quickness, so you are harder to see while in Stealth, plus Elune’s Light for a crit burst. Skyborne picks up 3% Haste through Wind Blessed, and Dwarf has Stoneform to wipe off bleeds and poisons applied by enemy Rogues.
Subtlety Rogue Changes
The Subtlety tree barely has a talent that was left alone. Four talents are brand new, Thousand Cuts, Quietus, Cutthroat and Dirty Tricks, and four more got a rework: Hemorrhage, Premeditation, Setup and Initiative. The full set of changes splits into two groups:
- New abilities and talents: Improved Distract, Dirty Tricks, Cutthroat, Quietus and Thousand Cuts.
- Changed from Classic: Dirty Deeds, Serrated Blades, Opportunity, Initiative, Setup, Premeditation, Ghostly Strike and Hemorrhage.
The pattern behind these changes is easy to read. Classic Subtlety was mostly a PvP tree, so the new talents bring an execute bonus, Energy back from Rupture ticks and cheaper crowd control. Several tools also lean on Stealth less than before: Premeditation works outside it, Sap keeps you in it, and Cutthroat can let you cast an Ambush without it. That makes the spec less all-or-nothing.
New Subtlety Rogue Abilities and Talents
Most of the new talents raise PvE damage or make crowd control cheaper, while the PvP tools the spec is known for remain available in the tree.
| Subtlety Talent | Effect at Max Rank | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Thousand Cuts | Every Rupture tick takes 3 Energy off your next Hemorrhage or Backstab used within 10 sec; up to 5 stacks | Roughly 1.5 Energy per second if Rupture never drops |
| Quietus | 10% extra damage for Sinister Strike, Ghostly Strike and Hemorrhage on targets under 35% Health | An execute bonus for long boss phases |
| Cutthroat | 15% chance on Backstab to let your next Ambush within 10 sec be cast outside Stealth | Extra Ambushes for dagger builds |
| Dirty Tricks | 50% lower Energy cost for Sap and Blind | Cheaper crowd control |
Subtlety Rogue Changes from Classic
These are the main differences from Classic. They affect your damage, your Combo Points and how Stealth behaves.
- With a dagger, Hemorrhage now hits harder, and it adds 15% to your Rupture damage; the old physical damage bonus for the whole group was removed.
- Ghostly Strike scales with your weapon type: a dagger gives 180% weapon damage, any other weapon 125%.
- Premeditation no longer requires Stealth, and the Combo Points it gives now last 20 sec instead of 10.
- Setup sits higher in the tree now and reaches a 100% chance at 3/3, but a later beta update limited it to the enemy whose attack you dodged.
- At 3/3, Initiative now always triggers: 100%, up from 75%.
- Opportunity is a 2-point talent worth 10% damage, and it now covers Mutilate as well.
- At 3/3, Serrated Blades lets you ignore a flat 9% of armor and raises Rupture damage by 30%.
- Dirty Deeds lowers the cost of Cheap Shot and Garrote by 20 and removes the positional requirement from Garrote.
- Sap no longer pulls you out of Stealth, so Improved Sap was cut; Sleight of Hand and Deadliness are gone as well.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the questions Subtlety players ask most, from PvE viability to openers.
Is Subtlety Rogue viable for PvE in WoW Forever?
Subtlety Rogue looks viable for PvE in WoW Forever: of the three Rogue trees it got the most PvE-focused changes, among them Thousand Cuts and Quietus. It should hold its own in single-target damage, but the full kit can only be tested after the level cap rises above 30.
Which Rogue spec is best for PvP in WoW Forever?
For PvP, Subtlety is the strongest Rogue spec in WoW Forever. Both popular Rogue PvP gear lists use it, one with daggers and Ambush, the other with Hemorrhage, and its openers, Preparation and the cheaper Sap and Blind add up to very strong control.
Does Premeditation need Stealth in WoW Forever?
Premeditation does not need Stealth anymore in WoW Forever. Premeditation gives your target 2 Combo Points that you have to spend or build on within 20 sec, and its cooldown is 2 min, so you can use it outside Stealth too.
Does Sap break Stealth in WoW Forever?
