Discipline Priest in Midnight Season 2 at a Glance
Checked on 12 October 2026 for patch 12.1 and Season 2. Patch 12.1.5 (13 October) shortens one Discipline effect, described below, and this page is re-checked after it.
Discipline heals by dealing damage. Atonement turns part of the damage you deal into healing on allies who carry the buff, and Power Word: Shield, Power Word: Barrier and Void Shield add absorbs on top. In Season 2 the spec has been tuned away from large Atonement ramps toward pressing buttons on cooldown, with Mind Blast now central to both Void Shield and the Voidweaver Hero Talent tree.

Where Discipline Ranks, and How It Compares With Holy Priest
Discipline is placed low but not far behind. On the wow.gg Mythic+ healer data (week 8, 10 October), all seven healers are within 20K average HPS of each other. In Heroic raid the picture is wider. Both Priest healers read B on the grading lists, so the fairest comparison is with the other Priest:
| Measure | Discipline | Holy Priest |
|---|---|---|
| Icy Veins, Mythic+ healers (24 Sep) | B | B |
| Method, Mythic+ (5 Oct) | B | B |
| wow.gg Mythic+ average HPS, highest key | 185K, +22 | 197K, +22 |
| wow.gg Heroic raid average HPS | 318K, last of seven | 422K, first of seven |
The lists give the two specs the same grade, but the logs do not: Discipline trails Holy Priest by about 6% in Mythic+ and about 25% in raid, and sits 46K behind the next-lowest raid healer (Holy Paladin). Icy Veins describes the spec as “solid output” with consistent healing through Atonement and strong effective-health gains from Power Word: Shield, Lenience and Power Word: Barrier. wow.gg only measures healing per second, so it says nothing about the cooldown and absorb tools that the grading lists also weigh. Other healers are compared in Midnight Best Healers.
What Changed in Patch 12.1 and 12.1.5
Blizzard’s goal for Discipline in 12.1 (Curse of Ula’tek) was to depend less on procs: the spec relied too much on Shadow Mend and Void Shield procs to heal well. Icy Veins’ summary:
- Shadow Mend is now a passive upgrade to Flash Heal.
- Void Shield: Mind Blast can now force a proc, the deck size went up to 4, the absorb was nerfed, and the buff stacks to 2 so you do not lose a proc when Mind Blast and Penance land close together.
- Atonement scaling falls off more harshly after 5 targets.
- Smite damage +40%; Void Blast damage +25% and Void Infusion 75% (was 50%); Greater Smite is a one-point talent (was 2) and lasts 4 seconds (was 2).
- Inescapable Torment was nerfed by 30%.
- Penance no longer applies Atonement.
On 18 August Blizzard cut all Discipline damage by 30% (PvP excepted) and raised the share of damage converted into healing by Atonement to 46% (was 32%), so healing was meant to stay about the same. Entropic Rift damage went up 20% to help Voidweaver in dungeons, and Void Shield reflects 10% of absorbed damage (was 15%).
Patch 12.1.5 (13 October): Blizzard’s note for Discipline is one line: Master the Darkness duration reduced from 1 minute to 30 seconds.
Atonement in Season 2: Press Buttons, Don't Chase 20 Atonements
Atonement still drives the spec, but the longest explanation on Icy Veins’ healer page is about what it no longer rewards. After repeated tweaks the scaling falls off so much past 5 targets that applying more Atonements is only for coverage, not for throughput. Two consequences:
- You keep a healthy number of Atonements naturally by pressing Mind Blast, Penance and Power Word: Shield on cooldown, and by placing Power Word: Radiance on incoming damage.
- Deliberately adding Atonements with Plea or Flash Heal costs mana and often gives no extra healing per second, because you spend global cooldowns on coverage instead of damage. An occasional cast for Binding Heals is fine.
You can still ramp to 20 if you need coverage for a damage event. Just do not expect much more healing from it.
Raid ramp with Evangelism
The general sequence (Void Shield replaces Power Word: Shield whenever a proc is up): refresh Shadow Word: Pain if it would fall off, Power Word: Shield, Flash Heal, Evangelism, Power Word: Radiance once or twice depending on coverage, Mind Blast, Penance, Void Shield, then Void Blast until Penance is ready again. In dungeons Evangelism heals the group immediately and makes your next two Radiances instant, with no time limit, which helps on mobile fights. It also triggers Archangel or Mindbender, depending on your talent.
Voidweaver or Oracle
| Voidweaver | Oracle | |
|---|---|---|
| Core idea | Mind Blast creates Entropic Rift; Smite becomes Void Blast while it lasts; the Voidwraith pet appears when it expires | Extra Penance charge (Guiding Light), stronger Penance and Power Word: Shield (Twinsight, Preventive Measures) |
| Recommended for | Raid and Delves | Mythic+ (weekly and high keys) |
| Strength | Very high raw Atonement healing and near-constant Entropic Rift thanks to the tier set | Better single-target healing, less locked into a filler damage spell |
| Weakness | Movement; feels weak when Mind Blast is on cooldown, and has weak single-target healing | Lower raw throughput |
Voidweaver is also reasonable in Mythic+ if the single-target pressure in dungeons turns out to be manageable, and Oracle in raid if a fight demands a lot of movement. Voidweaver gains a lot from the 2-set, so it can feel weak before you have it.
Apex talent: Master the Darkness. Rank 1 gives a chance for your next Power Word: Shield after Penance to become Void Shield, which splashes to two nearby allies. Ranks 2 and 3 add Atonement healing and Shadow damage. Rank 4 reflects part of the absorbed Void Shield amount as damage (which also heals through Atonement) and lets Mind Blast force a Void Shield. Use a proc before your next Penance, or hold it for a big damage event.
As Voidweaver, Void Blast is strong enough that clipping Penance to return to it can raise healing per second.
Discipline Gear: Set Bonuses, Stats and Trinkets
Tier set: Cosmic Penitent Raiment for Discipline
- 2-set: Penance heals and deals 20% more, and each Penance you cast takes 2 seconds off the cooldown of Mind Blast.
- 4-set: after Mind Blast, your next Power Word: Shield or Void Shield absorbs more.
Icy Veins calls the 2-set “incredibly important”: more Mind Blast casts means more Void Shield and more Entropic Rift. Playing around it mostly means pressing buttons on cooldown a bit faster. The 4-set matters less. See Midnight Tier Sets for how to get pieces.
Stat priority
| Build | Priority |
|---|---|
| Voidweaver and general | Haste (until 1,800 rating), Mastery, Critical Strike, Versatility |
| Oracle | Haste, Mastery, Critical Strike, Versatility (all close; avoid passing a diminishing returns point) |
Haste reduces cast times and the cooldowns of Power Word: Shield, Mind Blast and Penance. Mastery: Grace raises healing on Atonement targets, including Atonement healing itself. Atonement healing cannot crit: only the damage it copies can.
Trinkets and gear
S tier trinkets are Wavecaller’s Seastone, Soulcoiler Ritual Vessel, Hex Lord’s Dooming Idol (only at its highest possible item level) and Gebbo’s Bottomless Bag. The best-in-slot weapon is Jan’thrazet, the Soul Fang from Ula’tek, the helm is Venomkeeper’s Horrific Cowl from the same boss, and tailoring provides the waist and bracers. A Season 2 bonus roll costs one Nebulous Voidcore and never gives the same item twice, so you can target a specific drop over several weeks. Upgrade paths are in the Midnight gearing guide.
Discipline Priest FAQ
Is Discipline Priest good in Midnight Season 2?
It is B tier on both Icy Veins and Method, and wow.gg shows it within about 12K HPS of the best healer in Mythic+, but last in Heroic raid. It is viable, not top.
Voidweaver or Oracle?
Icy Veins recommends Voidweaver for raid and Delves and Oracle for Mythic+.
Do I still need to ramp Atonements?
Only for coverage. Atonement scaling drops sharply after 5 targets, so more Atonements add little healing.
What changed in 12.1?
Shadow Mend is a passive Flash Heal upgrade, Mind Blast can force a Void Shield, Penance no longer applies Atonement, Smite hits 40% harder.
What changes in 12.1.5?
Master the Darkness duration drops from 1 minute to 30 seconds.
What is the Discipline stat priority?
Haste, Mastery, Critical Strike, Versatility.
