Demonology Warlock in Midnight Season 2 at a Glance

Data on this page was read on 12 October 2026 for patch 12.1 and Season 2. Blizzard’s notes for patch 12.1.5 (13 October) list no Warlock changes.

Demonology summons waves of short-lived demons while building Soul Shards with Shadow Bolt and Demonbolt, and spends the shards on Call Dreadstalkers and Hand of Gul’dan. It takes a few seconds to ramp up, then feels smooth and fast. After the 12.1 patch and the August hotfixes it is the top spec by average damage in Mythic+ on wow.gg.

Where Demonology Ranks, and How It Compares With the Other Warlock Specs

The three Warlock specs, as the three sources see them:

Warlock spec Icy Veins (Mythic+ 6 Oct / raid 24 Sep) Method Mythic+ (5 Oct) wow.gg Mythic+ (week 8) wow.gg Heroic raid
Demonology A+ / S B 1st, 393K 2nd, 292K
Affliction B / A C 20th, 314K 22nd, 250K
Destruction B / A B 24th, 297K 21st, 255K

Demonology averages 79K more than Affliction and 96K more than Destruction in Mythic+ (about 25% and 32%), and 42K and 37K more in Heroic raid. Method is the odd one out: it grades Demonology B, level with Destruction, while the logs and the other grading list agree that it leads. Icy Veins describes the spec as good single target with strong AoE, with very little funneling, little swap potential and no spread cleave. The apex talent brings a lot of power but also volatility in the output. The August patches matter for these numbers: they raised Demonology by large margins, as the next section shows, and a 1 September note said it had become the highest-damage Mythic+ spec after the buffs, including a roughly 12.5% AoE gain that may have been unintended. Expect re-tuning. The full table is in Midnight Best DPS.

Buffs Since Patch 12.1: What Changed

Date Change
Patch 12.1 (11 Aug) Shadow Bolt +45%, Demonbolt +55%, Summon Gloomhound +35%. Diabolist: Chaos Salvo, Felseeker, Wicked Cleave and Eye Explosion all -20%, Flames of Xoroth bonus 3% (was 4%), meant to make Soul Harvester the slightly better single-target tree. Baseline Soul Leech gives more defense
18 Aug hotfix The Venomous Abyss 2-set: Wild Imps implode at 350% effectiveness on the main target (was 250%) and 315% on others (was 225%), lifting the set bonuses from single digits to about 10%
25 Aug hotfix Imp, Voidwalker, Sayaad and Felhunter damage +350%. Shadow Bolt +35%, Demonbolt +30%, Wild Imp +20%, Summon Felguard +20%, Dominion of Argus demons +20%, Call Dreadstalkers +30%

Icy Veins says the 25 August changes were meant to bring single-target damage closer to Destruction, but they also raised AoE, making Demonology the best AoE Warlock spec and among the highest AoE overall. Felguard remains the default pet.

Patch 12.1.5 lists no Demonology changes.

Demonology Gameplay: Shards, Dominion of Argus and the Opener

The three rules from Icy Veins: always be casting (Demonology has the fastest Shard flow, so keep generating with Shadow Bolt and Demonbolt), use your short cooldowns (Call Dreadstalkers and Implosion) as often as possible, and maximize Hand of Gul’dan casts in the apex window.

Dominion of Argus is the apex talent and the main damage window. The rotation is built around it: the emphasis moved from setting up Summon Demonic Tyrant to the window afterward, where casting as many Hand of Gul’dan as possible, and so summoning more demons, decides your damage. Enter it with some Demonic Cores so you get more Hand of Gul’dans before the timer ends.

Summon Demonic Tyrant lasts 20 seconds and deals damage from the number of Wild Imps and Dreadstalkers active; the damage is calculated dynamically, with no snapshot.

Opener: pre-cast Demonbolt, Grimoire: Imp Lord, Shadow Bolt if below 2 Soul Shards, Call Dreadstalkers, Summon Demonic Tyrant, then as many Hand of Gul’dan as possible, and Implosion with 6 Wild Imps out and 1 or fewer Demonic Core.

Doom deals damage when the target dies or the debuff ends, so spread Demonbolt to different targets, especially low-health ones. On a single target, each Hand of Gul’dan shortens Doom by 3 seconds, so hold a Demonic Core to reapply Doom when it expires. Do not neglect curses.

Demonology is best on fights with stable movement, not chaotic movement. Like every Warlock it brings Demonic Gateway, which moves the whole group 40 yards instantly.

Soul Harvester or Diabolist

Soul Harvester Diabolist
Style Spend shards aggressively for DoT effects and more Demonic Core procs (Sataiel’s Volition) Predictable cycle of Overlord, Mother of Chaos and Pit Lord from Diabolic Ritual; higher burst
Single target About 3% higher than Diabolist Lower, but much more free cleave
AoE and Mythic+ Weaker cleave Better at any key level
Utility Stronger Healthstones without Soulburn, better active mitigation, Soulstone close to other combat resurrections Snare and root immunity on Demonic Circle: Teleport, 25-second Howl of Terror on up to 10 targets

Icy Veins’ import list has Soul Harvester for single target and Delves, and Diabolist for AoE and Mythic+ (“comparable single-target to Soul Harvester” while keeping the better AoE).

Demonology Gear: Set Bonuses, Stats and Trinkets

Tier set: Damned Necrolight’s Shattered Restraints, as Demonology uses it

  • 2-set: Wild Imp damage +10% and Implosion damage +20%.
  • 4-set: when their energy runs out, Wild Imps have a 20% chance to fling themselves at the target and implode at 250% effectiveness on the main target and 225% on others.

Icy Veins describes both as passive damage increases that do not change your decisions. Pieces are covered in Midnight Tier Sets.

Stat priority

Item level, Haste up to 22%, then Critical Strike, Mastery, Haste, Versatility. The secondary stats are close in value, so a balanced spread beats stacking two stats past their diminishing returns. Haste speeds casting and increases the number of attacks your demons (apart from Wild Imps) make before despawning, and gives more Demonic Core procs and Soul Shards. Mastery: Master Demonologist increases demon damage and matters more in multi-target.

Trinkets and gear

Vile Vial of Volatile Venom is S tier. A tier: Stormbound Emblem of Dazar, Wavecaller’s Seastone, Gebbo’s Bottomless Bag, Hex Lord’s Dooming Idol and Vexhul’s Everflowing Gland. The best-in-slot weapon is Jan’thrazet, the Soul Fang, and the helm is Venomkeeper’s Horrific Cowl, both from Ula’tek. For bonus rolls with Nebulous Voidcores, the order is Mythic-track Jan’thrazet first, then the helm, then Mythic-track weapons and trinkets (especially Gebbo’s), then missing tier pieces.
