Best Professions in MoP Classic: Short Answer (October 2026)
Updated 12 October 2026 for Phase 5. Professions work the same in every phase, but Phase 5 adds more raid content that rewards the combat bonuses.
For raiding, Engineering is the profession most guides recommend. For casters, Tailoring gives the biggest short-duration burst. For steady gold, a gatherer with a matching crafter, such as Herbalism with Alchemy, needs no Auction House purchases. Every profession bonus below is flat at level 90: 320 for a primary stat and 640 for a secondary stat, with some exceptions.
| Goal | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Raid damage | Engineering + Blacksmithing or Alchemy | Synapse Springs, two extra sockets, longer flasks |
| Caster burst | Tailoring + Engineering | Lightweave Embroidery and Synapse Springs |
| Self-sufficient gold | Herbalism + Alchemy | The herbs feed the flasks and potions you sell |
| Simple solo income | Mining or Herbalism | Sell what you gather |
1. Best Overall Profession in Mists of Pandaria Classic
Engineering is typically considered the strongest profession for raiding. It works by tinkers that you attach to your gear and by gadgets, not by crafting items to sell.
- Synapse Springs (gloves) gives about 1,920 of your primary stat, Agility or Intellect, for a short time on a low cooldown. Use it with your damage cooldowns.
- Nitro Boosts (belt) is a short sprint, on a cooldown, for dodging mechanics or escaping in PvP.
- Engineers also get gadgets, bombs and several mounts (see our MoP Classic mount guide).
The cost: Engineering rarely sells well on its own, so pair it with Mining for the bars and stones its recipes use.
2. Mists of Pandaria Classic Profession Rankings
The table lists what each profession gives a max-level character. The numbers come from Warcraft Tavern’s per-spec profession guides (written for Agility and Intellect users) and Icy Veins’ profession overview.
| Profession | Bonus | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering | Synapse Springs (gloves), Nitro Boosts (belt), Watergliding Jets | About 1,920 primary stat for a short time |
| Tailoring | Lightweave Embroidery (Intellect cloak), Swordguard Embroidery (Attack Power cloak) | Up to 2,000 Intellect for a short time, or a 4,000 Attack Power proc |
| Blacksmithing | Socket Bracer and Socket Gloves (two extra sockets) | 320 primary stat or 640 Critical Strike |
| Jewelcrafting | Serpent’s Eye gems, up to 3 equipped | Same size as the sockets above, with more choice |
| Alchemy | Mixology | +320 primary stat from flasks, which last twice as long |
| Enchanting | Ring enchants (Greater Agility or Intellect) | +320 primary stat |
| Leatherworking | Fur Lining bracer enchant | +320 primary stat |
| Inscription | Secret Tiger Claw (Agility) or Secret Crane Wing (Intellect) shoulder inscription | +320 primary stat |
| Herbalism | Lifeblood | Haste: 480 listed as a passive and 2,880 on an on-demand effect with a 2-minute cooldown |
| Mining | Toughness | +480 Stamina |
| Skinning | Master of Anatomy | +480 Critical Strike |
Warcraft Tavern groups Engineering, Alchemy and Blacksmithing at the top for Agility users, and Tailoring and Engineering at the top for Intellect casters. Mining, Herbalism and Skinning rate lower for combat, though they remain the best professions for selling raw materials.
Most of these effects exist for either role: the Intellect version of an enchant replaces the Agility one.
3. Top Professions by Activity in MoP Classic
PvE performance
Engineering, then Blacksmithing for the two sockets, or Alchemy for the flask bonus. A raider who wants to maximize damage can also use Jewelcrafting for the Serpent’s Eye gems.
PvP
Engineering again, for Synapse Springs and Nitro Boosts. Alchemy adds stronger flasks. Tailoring has strong burst for casters.
Gold
Gathering professions are the simplest source: Icy Veins describes Herbalism as a great money-maker, because herbs are in constant demand for flasks and potions, and Mining as a source of ore and bars for Jewelcrafting, Blacksmithing and Engineering. Gold per hour depends on your realm’s prices, and we publish no numbers because they change every week.
Solo play
Herbalism and Mining need no recipes, cooldowns or Auction House purchases.
Spirit of Harmony
Spirit of Harmony is a bind-on-pickup material that crafters need for end-game items. It can also buy an extra Alchemy transmute, rare inks for Inscription, extra daily discoveries for Jewelcrafting, reagents for Enchanting and herbs for Herbalism. Plan your Spirit of Harmony before you spend it.
4. MoP Classic Best Crafting Profession
For crafting value, Alchemy is the broad pick. It makes flasks and potions that every raider buys, and it has the Transmute: Living Steel recipe. Living Steel is a metal bar used in Blacksmithing and in the Jewelcrafting panther mounts (see the mount guide).
| Crafting profession | What sells or helps | Pair with |
|---|---|---|
| Alchemy | Flasks, potions, transmutes. Mixology for yourself | Herbalism |
| Inscription | Glyphs, inks and the shoulder inscriptions. Darkmoon Faire cards | Herbalism |
| Blacksmithing | Plate gear, weapons, sockets, Living Steel Belt Buckle | Mining |
| Tailoring | Cloth gear, bags, cloak embroideries. Almost independent of other professions, since its main material is cloth | Enchanting (disenchant spare gear) |
| Jewelcrafting | Gems, neck, rings, trinkets, panther mounts | Mining (prospecting) |
| Leatherworking | Leather and mail armor and slot enchants | Skinning |
| Enchanting | Enchants, from materials gained by disenchanting | Any crafter |
5. Best Professions for Each Class in MoP Classic
No profession is class-locked. What changes is the stat: Agility classes take Agility versions of enchants, Intellect classes take Intellect ones.
| Role | Best choices | Poor choices |
|---|---|---|
| Hunter, Agility DPS | Engineering, Alchemy, Blacksmithing | Mining (Stamina), Skinning |
| Fire Mage, caster DPS | Tailoring, Engineering | Mining, Herbalism, Skinning |
Healers and tanks should check their spec page before buying recipes, because most of the numbers above are written for damage dealers. For example, Warcraft Tavern says Mining’s Toughness is an inefficient stat for a Balance Druid. Always check the spec page for your class. Our MoP Classic class rankings guide helps with the class choice itself.
6. The Best Profession Pairs in MoP Classic
Icy Veins advises pairing a crafting profession with the gatherer that supplies its materials, unless you take Enchanting and Tailoring together.
| Pair | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Alchemy + Herbalism | Herbs are the main component of most Alchemy recipes. You make flasks without buying herbs |
| Engineering + Mining | Engineering recipes use bars and stones. Best for raiders and PvPers |
| Blacksmithing + Mining | Bars feed the recipes, and the two extra sockets help every plate and mail wearer |
| Inscription + Herbalism | Herbs are milled into ink for glyphs and inscriptions |
| Jewelcrafting + Mining | You prospect ore into the gems you cut |
| Leatherworking + Skinning | Leather is the main component of most recipes |
| Tailoring + Enchanting | No gatherer needed. Disenchant spare cloth gear into enchanting materials |
7. Best Mists of Pandaria Professions – FAQ
What is the best money profession in MoP Classic?
Herbalism with Alchemy is the self-sufficient choice. Herbs feed flasks and potions, which raiders buy every week. Actual prices depend on your realm.
What is the best profession for raiding?
Engineering, because of Synapse Springs. Tailoring is the strongest short burst for casters.
What is the easiest profession to level?
Gathering professions need only nodes. Icy Veins notes that a profession tool is no longer required and now gives a small bonus.
Can I change profession later?
Yes. You can drop and relearn professions, but the skill resets, so choose carefully.
Which are the secondary professions?
Archaeology, Cooking, Fishing and First Aid. They do not use one of your two main slots, and you can learn all four.
8. How to Choose Your Two Professions
- Decide if your main goal is raiding, PvP or selling. Raiders start with Engineering.
- Take a crafter and its matching gatherer, or Tailoring with Enchanting.
- Check your spec page for the stat you need before you buy a recipe.
- Keep your Spirit of Harmony for the items you will actually craft.
