What to Bring to a Season 2 Mythic+ Key
Season 2 data as of 12 October 2026, one day before patch 12.1.5. Placements come from Icy Veins (24 September to 6 October), Method (5 October) and wow.gg (10 October).
This page answers a narrower question than a full tier list: which specs are safe to bring to a key group, and what do top groups actually pick? For the full tables of every spec see our Season 2 Mythic+ tier list and the 27-spec DPS tier list.
| Role | Safest picks | Placement (Icy Veins / Method) |
|---|---|---|
| Tank | Blood Death Knight, then Guardian Druid | S / S and A+ / A |
| Healer | Holy Paladin, then Restoration Shaman | S / S and S / A |
| DPS | Elemental Shaman, Arms Warrior | S+ / S for both |
| DPS | Arcane Mage, Assassination Rogue | S+ / A for both |
Method states that the better player usually beats a spec that is higher on the list, and Icy Veins says all six tank specs can complete about 99% of keys. The lists matter most when you are choosing between two similar options for a slot.
What Groups Actually Play: Raider.IO Data
Icy Veins’ week 3 report for Season 2 (published 10 September 2026) uses Raider.IO data from all Mythic+ runs at all levels. It is a month old, so read it as a pattern, not a current snapshot.
| Spec | Icy Veins / Method tier | Popularity in week 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Arcane Mage | S+ / A | Most played spec, 10.6% of players |
| Blood Death Knight | S / S | Second most played |
| Beast Mastery Hunter | A+ / A | Third, up four places in one week |
| Demonology Warlock | A+ / B | Sixth, up three places |
| Arms Warrior | S+ / S | Seventh, down four places, yet first at the 95th percentile of Warcraft Logs damage |
| Fire Mage, Augmentation Evoker, Survival Hunter | B / C, C / C, A / B | Bottom of the list, each under half a percent of players |
The same report counted the first completed +21 keys and found that most of the highest keys were run by the top group composition. That group made up 13.2% of the top 30 compositions, which is 0.9% of all compositions. The second and third most common groups were each near 6%: the second swapped Elemental Shaman for Demonology Warlock, the third used Retribution Paladin. Windwalker Monk, a surprise disappointment at the start of the season, climbed to seventh among the best performers, and Elemental Shaman was second to Arms at the 95th percentile.
Two things follow. Popularity follows tier lists only loosely (Arms is S+ and not heavily played; Demonology is B on Method but common), and the specs that every list ranks low (Augmentation, Fire) are almost absent from real groups.
The Utility That Decides Group Spots
At the same damage, the spec that brings a debuff or buff the group lacks gets the slot. Icy Veins’ Season 2 tank lists name these examples:
| Utility | Who brings it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Death Grip | Blood Death Knight (and other Death Knights) | Pulls stationary ranged and caster mobs that are the hardest to group up. Blood is the only tank without a unique party-wide buff, so Death Grip is its value. |
| Mystic Touch | Monk specs, Brewmaster for tanking | Physical damage taken by the target goes up by 5%. Brewmaster’s core spot has always been physical groups, which are among the best this season. |
| Chaos Brand | Demon Hunters (Vengeance, Havoc and Devourer) | Magic damage taken goes up by 3%. Icy Veins says Vengeance’s main reason to be brought is Chaos Brand, and that Havoc and Devourer are performing well too. |
| Mark of the Wild | Druids, including Guardian | A group-wide Versatility buff that adds damage and survivability. |
Blood still tops the tank lists without a unique buff, because its durability and the highest damage of any tank (234K average on wow.gg) outweigh it. In raid, Icy Veins goes further: it calls Blood irreplaceable on encounters that need constant Death Grips, and expects Brewmaster to be a lock for many teams because of Mystic Touch.
Pick by Goal and Key Level
- Timing mid-level keys. Play what you know. Method states that the better player usually beats a more “meta” spec.
- Pushing high keys with a premade group. The top composition is only 0.9% of all groups in the Raider.IO data, so there is no single required comp. Cover the debuffs above and pick strong specs for the rest.
- Pugging. Choose specs that are high on more than one list: Blood or Guardian as tank, Holy Paladin or Restoration Shaman as healer, and Elemental, Arms, Arcane or Assassination for damage.
- Healer choice. Holy Priest has the highest average healing on wow.gg (197K) but is B on both lists, so its tier does not describe its output.
Season 2 uses eight dungeons, from Den of Nalorakk and Murder Row to the new Altar of Fangs, which Method rates as the hardest. See Midnight All Dungeons for the pool and our Season 2 preparation guide for gear.
How the Three Sources Differ
The lists disagree because they measure different things. Icy Veins grades pure strength together with group-added value such as utility, survivability and mobility. Method grades Mythic+ for this season’s dungeon pool. wow.gg averages the damage of the top 100 players by rating, so it also reflects who chooses the spec. Raider.IO and Warcraft Logs, used in Icy Veins’ weekly reports, count runs and points, not damage.
The dungeon pool matters too. Method rates Kings’ Rest the easiest dungeon and Altar of Fangs, new in patch 12.1, the hardest; in week 1 Icy Veins found every Altar of Fangs boss to be a healing check. That is our reason to treat healer choice as more important there than in the other seven dungeons.
What Could Change in 12.1.5
The 6 October hotfixes changed six PvE specs. Unholy Death Knight’s Blightfall now deals 100% of remaining plague damage (was 200%). Devourer abilities got +8% to +10%. Brewmaster’s Quick Sip purifies 8% of current Stagger per 3 seconds gained (was 5%). Mistweaver’s Invigorating Mists and Enveloping Mist healing is +15%. Subtlety’s Trickster talents and Enhancement Shaman’s damage (+4%, Lava Lash +35%) were also raised.
Patch 12.1.5 on 13 October brings the return of Keystone Myth with targeted dungeon tuning, and a new achievement for a 3,600 rating. Its class notes change Protection Warrior, Devourer, Marksmanship, Outlaw and Subtlety. We will recheck the tables after the first week of data.
Mythic+ Group Composition FAQ
What is the best tank for Mythic+ in Season 2?
Blood Death Knight is S tier on Icy Veins and Method and the second most played spec in the Raider.IO week 3 report. Guardian Druid is the usual second choice.
Which healer should I bring to a Season 2 key?
Holy Paladin: S on Icy Veins and S on Method. Restoration Shaman is a close second, S on Icy Veins and A on Method.
Which DPS spec do most groups play?
Arcane Mage was the most played spec in the week 3 data, with Beast Mastery Hunter rising to third. Arms Warrior led at the 95th percentile of Warcraft Logs damage.
Do I need Mystic Touch or Chaos Brand?
You need one of the two debuffs more than you need a specific spec. A Monk or Demon Hunter in the group usually covers it.
Is the old Season 1 tier list still valid?
No. Season 1 ended on 11 August and several specs moved by two or more tiers since.
