WoW Forever Tank Tier List

Based on the WoW Forever beta as of 12 October 2026. The game launches on 4 November 2026 and the first raids open on 9 December, so every tank ranking you can read today, including this one, is built from talent trees and beta dungeons, not raid logs.

The public rankings split on the top spot. Mobalytics and Seemeta put Protection Warrior first, RankedBoost puts Protection Paladin first, and a damage simulation favours Paladin. Feral (Bear) Druid is third on Mobalytics and RankedBoost and level with Paladin on Seemeta, and Enhancement Shaman appears only on Mobalytics, as an experimental off-tank. Our call is that Warrior and Paladin are co-leaders (S/A) until raid logs exist.

Tank spec Onlyfarms pre-launch call Mobalytics (9 Oct) Seemeta (3 Oct) RankedBoost (3 Oct) MythicSim damage while tanking (7 Oct)
Protection Warrior S/A S S A 457 (91% of the top spec)
Protection Paladin S/A A A S 492 (97%)
Feral (Bear) Druid B B A B 433 (86%)
Enhancement Shaman C C not listed not listed not simulated

How to read the table: Mobalytics, Seemeta and RankedBoost grade each spec from its talent tree and key talents. Seemeta says outright that nobody has raid logs yet and will replace its list after launch. The MythicSim figure on Kami-labs ranks specs by damage dealt while tanking and, by the site’s own description, measures neither survival nor threat, so it explains why Paladin looks strong without proving it tanks better. All talent data comes from the beta, which is capped at level 30 (it started at 20), while the game will have a level 60 cap. Tiers can change with every beta build.

Protection Paladin (S/A Tier)

What Changed for Paladin Tanks

Protection Paladin gets the biggest redesign of the four. The old Classic problem was the lack of a proper taunt. In WoW Forever, Seal of Fury lets Judgement taunt the target for 4 seconds while dealing Holy damage. The seal also grants a shield worth 50% of the damage it deals on hit, and switching to another seal removes the taunt effect. Judgement no longer consumes your active seal, and its debuff lasts 40 seconds instead of 10 (Seal of Justice excepted).

Threat comes from several places: Righteous Fury now raises Holy threat by 90% (it was 60%), the new Holy Strike is an instant melee attack that scales from 25% to 40% weapon damage by rank, and Holy Shield deals Holy damage on block. In Blizzard’s beta notes updated on 8 October, Holy Shield’s block chance went from 20% to 30%, and the Protection talent Redoubt was reduced to 4/8/12/16/20% block (it was 6/12/18/24/30%).

Consecration is still the area-threat tool, but it was reworked: rank 5 deals 312 damage over 8 seconds to the first 4 targets and 96 to all others, where it used to hit every target for 384. The author who measured this thought the lower number on extra targets might be a beta bug, so check it on launch.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Strong: a real taunt, high area threat, Templar’s Bulwark (an absorb equal to 100% of max health for 8 seconds, per Mobalytics), blessings for the party.
  • Weak: mana is a worry, and there is still no traditional damage-reduction cooldown. The Shield Specialization talent restores 6% of max mana when you block, which helps.
  • Unknown: how it scales in level 60 raids. Mobalytics says exactly that.

Protection Warrior (S/A Tier)

Why Warrior Leads in the Beta Data

Protection Warrior was always the traditional Classic tank, but Deep Prot used to rank behind Fury Prot. The Forever tree changes this by fixing rage starvation:

Talent What it does (beta tooltips, talent tree transcribed from the BlizzCon demo)
Shield Specialization Block chance +1% to +5%, and a 20% to 100% chance (by rank) to gain 5 rage on block
Master of Defense (new) 50% then 100% chance to gain 5 rage on a dodge or parry with a shield equipped
Improved Revenge Revenge damage +20%, +40%, +60%; Revenge also costs only 5 rage and procs from blocks, dodges and parries
Defiance +5%, +10%, +15% threat in Defensive Stance with a shield
Bastion (new) All damage dealt +2% to +10% while a shield is equipped
Anticipation Defense skill +4 to +20 by rank

Shield Slam remains the main single-target threat button, and Sunder Armor builds threat stack by stack. Blizzard’s beta notes (1 October, updated 8 October) changed the Protection tree layout: Iron Will moved to row 1, Toughness was removed, and Rend and Sunder Armor now instantly tap enemies to the Warrior.

Weaknesses

Paladin has the more obvious area-threat tool in Consecration. Warrior pack threat leans on Sunder Armor and Cleave: the unfinished Mobalytics Protection Warrior guide builds around cutting Cleave’s rage cost so you can run into a pack and Cleave constantly. We found no beta source that measures either class’s area threat, so the Paladin’s pack advantage is a talent-tree conclusion, not a measured one.

Feral Druid (B Tier)

Bear Tanking in WoW Forever

Bear Form keeps the huge health and armor Druids always had, and WoW Forever tries to fix the old threat weakness. Lacerate is a stacking bleed (up to 5 stacks), Primal Bite deals 100% weapon damage and generates a high amount of threat, and Natural Reaction gives dodge chance plus a chance to gain 5 rage on every dodge, so defence feeds threat.

Berserk is the area-threat window: its tooltip says it makes Primal Bite strike up to 3 targets and removes the ability’s cooldown, for 15 seconds. Earlier versions of this page said Berserk did this for Mangle, which does not match the tooltip we found. In the beta notes of 1 October, Blizzard roughly doubled Primal Bite’s threat and gave Bear and Dire Bear Form 75% more rage on critical strikes. All forms are now immune to Disarm.

  • Strong: flexible (tank, DPS, heal), big health pool, Mark of the Wild for the party.
  • Weak: no shield and no block, so the Druid depends on health and a good healer. Mobalytics says this is the biggest open question for harder level 60 fights.

Enhancement Shaman (C Tier)

Shaman is not a fully supported tank. It wears mail, has no proper taunt (Stoneclaw Totem taunts extra mobs within 8 yards, which is not the same), and its defensive tools are spread over talents such as Anticipation, Toughness and Spirit Weapons plus Stoneskin Totem. Threat is the surprise: Rockbiter Weapon, Earth Shock and Fire Nova generate a lot of it, which could work in dungeons. Mobalytics ranks it C and questions how it scales into level 60 raids. Treat Shaman as a challenge pick, not a main tank, until raid data exists.

Best WoW Forever Tank for Every Situation

Situation Pick Why, and how sure we are
Beginner Protection Warrior Shield-based kit with a clear link between rage, threat and defence. Rage is no longer the bottleneck in the beta tree.
Dungeons Protection Paladin (Warrior close) Paladin has the strongest area threat on paper (Consecration, Holy Strike, Righteous Fury). Mobalytics notes that Paladins have always been strong dungeon tanks. Warrior is the more forgiving choice.
Raids (from 9 December) Undecided Raids open with Barrow Deeps (10 players), Hyjal Summit (20) and Onyxia’s Lair (40). Until logs exist, Warrior and Paladin are both reasonable. Check our DPS ranking for the other raid roles.
Solo or leveling No data No source we checked ranks solo tanking. The Seal of Fury shield absorbs 50% of the damage the seal deals.
Off-tank flexibility Feral Druid Can switch to DPS or healing; lacks shield and block.

Tanking Tips for WoW Forever

  • Open with your highest-threat tool. Paladin: Consecration, then Judgement to taunt, with Seal of Fury active. Warrior: Shield Slam. Bear: Primal Bite.
  • Know your taunt. Paladin’s taunt is Judgement for 4 seconds, and it only works while Seal of Fury is up. Do not change seals mid-pull.
  • Watch the known issues. Blizzard lists that debuffs such as Faerie Fire and Demoralizing Shout do not generate threat in the beta.
  • Use resource talents deliberately. Warrior rage and Paladin mana both come from blocking in this tree, so keep your shield equipped and your block chance up.
  • Save Berserk for the largest pack. It lets Primal Bite hit up to 3 targets without a cooldown for 15 seconds.

What Changed in the Beta (October Notes)

Blizzard’s WoW Forever beta development notes (posted 1 October, updated 8 October) changed the tanks like this:

Spec Change
Paladin Holy Shield block chance 30% (was 20%). Redoubt block chance 4/8/12/16/20% (was 6/12/18/24/30%)
Warrior Rend and Sunder Armor instantly tap enemies. Iron Will moved to Protection row 1; Toughness removed
Druid Bear and Dire Bear Form: 75% increased rage on critical strikes. Primal Bite threat roughly doubled. All shapeshift forms immune to Disarm
Shaman No tank-relevant changes
Known issue Faerie Fire and Demoralizing Shout do not generate threat

The beta runs from 17 September to 21 October 2026. Blizzard has not said that beta numbers are final, and some beta tooltips are known not to update correctly. For the broader picture see our best classes and best healers guides.

WoW Forever Tank Tier List FAQ

What is the best tank in WoW Forever?
There is no agreed answer before launch. Mobalytics and Seemeta rank Protection Warrior first, RankedBoost ranks Protection Paladin first. We treat them as co-leaders until raid logs exist after 9 December.

Is Protection Paladin better than Protection Warrior?
Not clearly. Paladin has stronger area threat on paper and deals more damage in the MythicSim test (492 against 457), but that test does not measure survival or threat. Warrior has an easier kit and rage is no longer a bottleneck.

Can Paladins taunt in WoW Forever?
Yes. With Seal of Fury active, Judgement taunts the target for 4 seconds.

Can Druids tank in WoW Forever?
Yes. Bear Form uses Lacerate and Primal Bite for threat, and Berserk lets Primal Bite hit 3 targets.

Can Shamans tank?
In the beta, as a C-tier experiment. There is no true taunt, and Mobalytics questions how it scales into level 60 raids.

When does WoW Forever launch?
4 November 2026. The beta runs from 17 September to 21 October, and the first three raids (Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit, Onyxia’s Lair) open on 9 December.

What is the level cap?
Blizzard describes a level 1 to 60 journey. The beta cap started at 20 and is being raised to 30.
