Key Takeaways

Leveling in AION 2 is short and streamlined: the global cap at launch is level 45, and the story alone carries you there. This guide walks through the whole route, tells you which activities are worth your time before the cap and which ones can wait, and explains why one small resource, Odyle Energy, deserves your attention from the very first dungeon. If you would rather skip the grind altogether, there is also AION 2 powerleveling in our store, but the route below is quick enough that most players can do it themselves.

  • Level cap: the maximum level at launch is 45, and finishing the main story quests (Episode Quests) is enough to get you there.
  • What you actually need: Episode Quests, the Ascension checkpoints and a handful of story dungeons. The rest of the open world can wait until you hit the cap.
  • Odyle Energy: do not open the reward cubes in leveling dungeons. Save the resource for max-level content, where the rewards are far more useful.
  • Side content: use Regional Quests, Sealed Dungeons and Strongholds only to fill an Ascension Gauge or when they sit right on your route.
  • After level 45: the bottleneck changes from XP to Gear Score, and that is when the postponed side content becomes useful.

The Fastest Way to Reach Level 45

The good news first: leveling in AION 2 is not hard. The game is a fairly casual theme park MMORPG, and most of its content is built around the endgame, so the road to the cap is deliberately smooth. You do not need to optimise anything to get through it.

Not sure which class to pick? Our Aion 2 class tier list ranks them for PvE and PvP.

Your whole job is to follow the story quests, which show up as yellow markers on the map. If you ever lose the thread, open the map screen and check the Episode tab, where the same quests are listed in order. On top of that you will meet two other things along the way. The first is Ascension, a set of milestone quests tied to specific levels. The most noticeable reward from them is better wings, and every grade lets you fly for longer. The second is a small number of dungeons from the Expedition category, which work like story-difficulty quests. We cover both in detail below.

That is genuinely it, because the story is the main leveling path and the rest of the route is built around it. While leveling, you can forget about most of the systems that will matter later:

  • Gear upgrades: you will enhance gear once as part of an early tutorial, and that is enough. Do not shop for equipment either, because story quests hand out new pieces that gradually build into sets.
  • Accessories: the few side quests you do for Ascension requirements reward accessories, so together with the story rewards every gear slot ends up covered.
  • Skills and Daevanion: you do not have to upgrade skills if you do not want to, and you can ignore the Daevanion system after its first tutorial.

In short, follow the main quest, finish your Ascensions, clear two or three dungeons and you are done. The pace is quick enough that it is over before you notice. A player who focuses purely on the story can expect roughly 3-4 hours to reach level 45, although that number grows if you stop to explore, collect things and clear side content.

Leveling Route Overview

To give you the big picture, here is what a typical run looks like from level 1 to the start of the endgame. Treat it as a checklist you can come back to while playing.

Level What to do
1-20 Follow Episode Quests
20 Unlock Krao Cave, your first Exploration Expedition
22 Complete the Ascension for Intermediate Daeva Wings
22-28 Continue Episode Quests
28 Complete Urugugu Canyon
32 Complete the next Ascension
32-35 Continue Episode Quests
35 Complete Fire Temple
35-45 Continue Episode Quests
45 Complete the Ascension for Ultimate Daeva Wings
45 Raise Gear Score and complete Draupnir
After 45 Continue toward the Abyss and finish the remaining Episode Quest

The one system worth understanding early is Ascension. Ascensions are big character progression checkpoints attached to the Episode Quest. Before each one you must meet certain quest requirements and also fill an Ascension Gauge to 100%. That gauge fills from several sources: Episode Quests, Regional Quests, Ascension Quests, Sealed Dungeons and Strongholds. In practice the routine is simple. When the gauge appears, reach the required level first, then run a few of those extra open-world activities until the bar is full. You have to do this at least to get the better wings, so it is not really optional.

The AION 2 dungeons guide covers every dungeon type and its rewards.

These are the Ascensions you will see on the way, with their rewards:

Level Quest Rewards
5 The One Who Perceives Lesser Daeva Wings (Bound)
22 The One Who Hears the Voice Intermediate Daeva Wings, Stigma Shard, Statue: Dream Fragment (all Bound)
32 The One Who Dreams Superior Daeva Wings, Statue: Artifact of Eternity (both Bound)
45 The One Who Witnesses the Nightmare Ultimate Daeva Wings (Bound), Ascension Bracelet, Fierce Battle Amulet, Statue: Asahr’s Mirror (Bound)
49 The One Who Swears the Oath None listed

Besides the wings, Ascensions also unlock progression systems such as Arcana and Daevanion. Ignoring them is possible, but you will have an irritating line sitting in your quest log until you deal with it.

Note: the numbering of Ascensions is not consistent between sources, and some of them count the level 5 quest while others do not. That is why this guide names each Ascension by its quest title, which is the safest way to know exactly which one you are looking at. Levels and rewards may also shift with future patches.

Levels 1-20: Follow the Episode Quests

Spend your first levels on the yellow Episode Quests. They are the main leveling path, and along the way they introduce most of AION 2’s systems at a gentle pace, so you learn the game just by playing the story.

The green Regional Quests are the game’s side quests. They are worth doing eventually, because they feed permanent progression (you only need to complete them once per character) and some reward useful gear. That said, there is no reason to clear every one the moment it appears. If a Regional Quest lies directly on your route or rewards a handy accessory, pick it up. Otherwise leave it for later without any guilt.

Feathers follow the same logic. They are collectibles scattered across the world, and you eventually bring them to a Monolith. The Monolith levels up as you feed Feathers into it and pays out permanent progression materials in return. The whole mechanic is called Resonance, and it deserves a guide of its own. One of the main uses of those rewards is improving your Amulet. Feathers clearly matter in the long run, but running across the map for each one while leveling slows you down. Grab the ones you pass on the way and come back for the rest after the cap.

Around this time you will also start spotting Strongholds and Sealed Dungeons. They are marked with a question mark on the map, and you need to get close to one before it reveals itself. Both are small instanced activities spread around the world. Strongholds contribute to Belt progression, while Sealed Dungeons feed permanent passive progression. Eventually you will want to clear all of them, including the ones on the opposing faction’s continent. Early on, though, use them mainly when they help fill an Ascension Gauge or happen to be on your path.

What Should You Upgrade While Leveling?

Short answer: very little. Gear and weapons get replaced quickly, so pouring enhancement materials into them before level 45 is rarely worth it. Better to keep your materials for pieces you will actually wear for a long time.

Daevanion deserves a quick mention too. Later dungeons have a Gear Score requirement, and Daevanion is one of the sources of that score. You can click on its nodes as you earn points, but they will not count toward unlocking new content until you reach the maximum level. It is also worth knowing what Daevanion is not. It does not unlock content by itself; it levels up your skills and provides various PvE bonuses. The system will get its own guide, and for leveling the rule is simple: you do not need to interact with it.

For the exact thresholds, see the AION 2 Gear Score guide.

If you want a faster start and prefer to skip these first levels entirely, our powerleveling category covers that, but there is no pressing need to rush these early levels, because they also teach you the basics of the game.

Level 20: Your First Expedition

Around level 20 the Episode Quest introduces Krao Cave, which is your first Exploration Expedition dungeon.

Expeditions are the standard PvE dungeons of AION 2. The ones you meet while leveling are called Exploration Expeditions, and their harder max-level counterparts are Conquest Expeditions. Both share a similar structure: usually two minibosses followed by a final boss. Defeating the minibosses adds extra loot to the final reward.

When you reach that final reward cube, you meet the Odyle Energy system, and this is where the most important decision of the whole leveling process appears.

What Is Odyle Energy?

Odyle Energy is the resource you spend to claim dungeon rewards. When you finish an Expedition, the final boss does not simply drop everything. A reward cube appears instead, and opening it costs Odyle Energy. So completing a dungeon and collecting its rewards are two separate steps, and you can do the first without doing the second.

Odyle Energy regenerates over time, and the same resource is used across several PvE activities, which is exactly why it becomes valuable later. These are the numbers, based on the playtest client:

  • Passive regeneration: 15 Odyle Energy every 3 hours
  • Daily passive regeneration: 120
  • Weekly passive regeneration: 840
  • Base cap with Membership: 840
  • Base cap without Membership: 560
  • Charged Odyle Energy cap: 2,000
  • Typical dungeon reward cube cost: 40 Odyle Energy

There are two separate pools. Basic Odyle Energy is the one that regenerates by itself. Charged Odyle Energy is a reserve that you refill through consumables and other sources, and basic energy is always spent first.

Here is the advice: clear the Exploration Expeditions that the Episode Quest requires, but do not automatically open their reward cubes. Keep your Odyle for Conquest Expeditions at level 45, where the rewards are far better for actual endgame gearing. Getting to your first Expedition early also helps, because that is the moment Odyle recovery starts running.

Note: the figures above come from the playtest client, so exact values may be tweaked in live patches. The logic of saving the resource stays valid either way.

Level 22: The One Who Hears the Voice

At level 22 you reach the next major Ascension, The One Who Hears the Voice. By this point you have already unlocked your wings and become a Daeva.

If you mostly rushed Episode Quests, your Ascension Gauge is probably not full yet. Expect to be at roughly 85% when the Ascension appears, which means only a handful of side activities stand between you and the quest. Regional Quests, Sealed Dungeons and Strongholds are the easiest ways to close the gap.

My recommended priority is simple. First pick Regional Quests that reward accessories, since those accessories also help with Gear Score requirements later in the story. If no accessory quests are nearby, clear convenient Sealed Dungeons or Strongholds instead. As soon as the gauge hits 100%, complete The One Who Hears the Voice. This Ascension upgrades your wings to Intermediate Daeva Wings and introduces Stigmas.

What Are Stigmas?

Stigmas are your powerful special skills. Depending on your class, they can add extra damage, utility, defensive tools or other effects. You do not need a fully optimised endgame Stigma setup while leveling. Once the system unlocks, though, keep the Stigmas you actually use upgraded alongside your normal skills. Permanent combat progression like this is a better investment than heavily enhancing temporary equipment that you will replace soon.

Levels 22-32: Back to the Episode Quest

After the Ascension, return to the Episode Quest and keep pushing forward. The story is the fastest source of XP you have, and it also rewards you with new gear pieces that add up to sets, so nothing else is needed to stay on pace. There is still no reason to grind normal enemies for XP or to farm dungeons repeatedly for equipment.

At level 28 you arrive at Urugugu Canyon, the second Exploration Expedition. Clear it, because the Episode Quest sends you there, but treat its reward cube the same way as the one in Krao Cave and save your Odyle Energy.

One small limitation is good to know. The game keeps track of a remaining unobtained cube count for Expeditions. If you clear dungeons over and over without opening their reward cubes, that number goes down, and when it reaches zero you cannot run further dungeons for the rest of the week. For a normal leveling run this barely matters, but it does mean you cannot clear dungeons endlessly without ever spending Odyle.

Tip: clearing a story dungeon once and moving on is the intended pace. Repeating leveling dungeons only to leave their cubes closed gains you nothing and eventually hits the weekly limit above.

Level 32: The One Who Dreams

At level 32 you reach the following Ascension, The One Who Dreams. It works much like the previous one. If your Ascension Gauge is not full, use nearby Regional Quests, Sealed Dungeons and Strongholds to complete it.

Check the Ascension Gauge as soon as the quest appears, before you head off to the next story objective, so you do not walk away and have to come back. Follow the same priority as before: Regional Quests with useful accessories first, then whichever Sealed Dungeons and Strongholds are closest. Do not wander across the map just to fill the bar; the shortest path to 100% is the best one.

Completing The One Who Dreams upgrades your wings to Superior Daeva Wings. Once that is done, head straight back to the Episode Quest.

Level 35: Fire Temple

At level 35 the next major dungeon is Fire Temple, another Exploration Expedition.

The general rule is unchanged: clear it, since it is part of your progression, but do not automatically spend Odyle Energy on the reward cube. There is one reasonable exception. Some players are specifically farming Fire Temple’s extended weapon for PvP. If that is your goal, spending Odyle there can make sense. If it is not, keep saving.

This also shows why the extended weapon is a special case. Most leveling rewards are meant to be temporary, but a weapon you actually want for PvP is a goal in itself, and in that case the Odyle is not wasted. For everyone else, the default stays the same.

Think of it as a simple question before every cube: is this reward something I will still use at level 45 or in PvP? If the honest answer is no, close the cube and move on.

Levels 35-45: Keep Going

From here your route is straightforward. Keep following Episode Quests and complete whatever mandatory content they send you into. You do not need to farm normal mobs, run Exploration Expeditions again and again for gear, collect every Feather or clear the whole map.

You also should not feel pressured to finish every Regional Quest, Stronghold and Sealed Dungeon before level 45. None of that content is useless. Much of it becomes essential for permanent progression later. The difference is timing. Before level 45, your priority is to reach the cap and move the Episode Quest forward. After 45, Gear Score and permanent progression become much more important, and that is when this content pays off.

It helps to think of the whole thing in two phases. The first is a sprint to the cap, where every detour costs you time. The second is a build-up phase, where all the detours you skipped turn into the fastest way forward. Mixing the two phases is the most common way to make leveling slower than it needs to be.

Level 45: The One Who Witnesses the Nightmare

At level 45 you reach the next Ascension, The One Who Witnesses the Nightmare. Completing it upgrades you to Ultimate Daeva Wings.

Level 45 is also the point where I would consider the leveling process itself finished, even though the Episode Quest keeps going. From here your main problem is no longer XP, it is Gear Score. Gear Score is AION 2’s overall measure of character strength. Equipment contributes to it, but permanent progression systems such as Daevanion raise it too. Later Episode Quest objectives and dungeons carry Gear Score requirements, so this is where all the side content you postponed starts to become useful.

Reaching level 45 also starts certain max-level progression timers. Nightmare Dungeon tickets, for example, begin recharging at level 45, according to a community guide creator. That is one more reason to reach the cap promptly, even if you plan to explore and clear the map afterward.

What to Do After Reaching Level 45

Once you hit 45, start clearing the permanent progression content you skipped earlier. Regional Quests, Sealed Dungeons, Strongholds, Daevanion progression and other systems now all help raise your Gear Score and meet the remaining Episode Quest requirements.

Also make sure you have your Clash Rune. It gives a PvE benefit and a significant Gear Score increase, which makes it a good tool for getting past later progression walls. If you are short on Kinah while setting up, you can buy Kinah in our store.

Need more currency? The AION 2 Kinah farming guide lists the best methods.

What Are Runes?

Runes are equippable progression items that provide extra bonuses and increase Gear Score. Regional Quests can reward class Runes during progression, while the later Clash Box gives you the Clash Rune.

Warning: do not enhance your early Runes aggressively. Rune enhancement can fail and destroy the Rune, and replacements are scarce at this stage. A very limited early investment is the recommended approach.

During leveling and early post-45 progression, simply having the right Rune equipped matters more than pushing enhancement too far. Treat it as a slow build, not a race.

Space-Time Rifts & the Enemy Continent

Eventually you also have to clear progression content on the opposing faction’s continent. Space-Time Rifts are the way to get there: temporary portals that let Elyos and Asmodians travel into enemy territory.

In the version this guide is based on, the details are:

  • Frequency: a Rift appears every three hours.
  • Entry window: you have 10 minutes to step through.
  • Time inside: once you cross, you can stay on the enemy continent for one hour.

During that hour you can explore the map and clear Regional Quests, Sealed Dungeons and Strongholds that are not reachable from your own faction’s continent.

These are not just optional completion goals. They provide more permanent character progression, which is useful when you are trying to push through Gear Score requirements.

Using a Rift does not automatically throw you into PvP. Players arrive unflagged by default. Still, hostile faction NPC guards can kill you very quickly if you get too close to their camps, so keep your distance from them. I also recommend picking up the relevant Rift Regional Quest before you enter, so the trip does not go to waste. With only an hour on the clock, planning your route in advance makes a big difference.

Level 45: Draupnir & the First Gear Score Wall

The last Exploration Expedition on this route is Draupnir. Unlike the earlier leveling dungeons, it can become a real progression wall, because you may reach it without enough Gear Score to enter.

If that happens, do not start grinding random enemies. XP is no longer the problem. Work on these instead:

  • Quests and instances: Regional Quests, Sealed Dungeons and Strongholds.
  • Character systems: Daevanion and Runes.
  • Enemy continent: progression through Space-Time Rifts.

This is why it is better to say that side content is postponed, not skipped. As soon as Gear Score starts blocking the Episode Quest, that side content becomes the natural solution. Once you meet the requirement, clear Draupnir and continue the story.

Why Save Odyle Energy for Level 45?

At level 45, Conquest Expeditions become much more relevant. These are harder max-level versions of the Expeditions you have already seen while leveling. Bosses gain extra mechanics, and the rewards fit real endgame gearing far better. If you do not want to run them yourself, there are dungeon run services in our store.

Another max-level PvE category is Transcendence Dungeons. They have several difficulty levels and focus more on progression resources such as Arcana Cards, whereas Expeditions lean toward equipment. Their reward cubes consume the same Odyle Energy, so sooner or later you have to decide where this limited resource brings the most value.

That is why I suggest saving Odyle instead of opening every leveling cube. The resource becomes more useful, not less, once you reach the cap. Leveling gear is replaced quickly, while a saved reserve can be turned into useful endgame rewards once you reach the cap. Put simply, spending Odyle early trades something lasting for something temporary.

Finish the Episode Quest & Enter the Abyss

After Draupnir, the Episode Quest eventually sends you toward the Abyss. The Abyss is AION 2’s shared PvPvE region, where Elyos and Asmodians occupy the same map and PvP is always active. Most activities there award Abyss Points, the main PvP progression currency. You can spend them on PvP gear, consumables, growth items and other rewards. Even if you mostly care about PvE, Abyss Points have real progression value, so do not ignore the system completely.

Depending on your Gear Score, you may need another round of Regional Quests, Sealed Dungeons, Strongholds or other permanent progression before the Episode Quest lets you continue. Once you meet the requirement, enter the Abyss and finish the remaining story objectives. They end with a unique weapon, which marks a natural endpoint of the leveling journey and the start of AION 2’s endgame.

When you arrive at that point, browse the rest of the AION 2 store if you want help with the endgame.

AION 2 Leveling Tips

If you remember only a few things from this guide, make them these:

  • Follow the yellow Episode Quests: they are the main leveling route.
  • Reach your first Expedition quickly: that is when Odyle Energy recovery becomes relevant.
  • Use side content to fill Ascension Gauges: Regional Quests, Sealed Dungeons and Strongholds are the most useful detours.
  • Prioritise accessory Regional Quests: they help with later Gear Score requirements.
  • Do not grind leveling dungeons for gear: Exploration rewards become outdated quickly.
  • Save Odyle Energy: spend it on more valuable max-level dungeon rewards instead.
  • Do not hunt every Feather while rushing: grab the convenient ones and return later.
  • Do not heavily enhance temporary leveling gear: it will be replaced soon.
  • Level 45 is not necessarily the end of the Episode Quest: expect Gear Score requirements afterward.
  • Skipping side content really means postponing it: much of the map content contributes permanent character progression.

The complete route in one line: Episode Quest, Krao Cave, Ascension at 22, Urugugu Canyon, Ascension at 32, Fire Temple, level 45, Ascension at 45, permanent progression cleanup, Draupnir, Abyss, and finally the end of the Episode Quest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum level in AION 2?

The current global level cap is 45. You will usually reach level 45 before you fully finish the Episode Quest, so some story and Gear Score progression continues afterward.

How long does it take to reach level 45 in AION 2?

If you focus only on the story quests, an average player needs about 3-4 hours to reach level 45. New players can take longer if they explore, complete Regional Quests, collect Feathers or clear more side content along the way.

What are Ascension quests in AION 2?

Ascension quests are major progression checkpoints tied to the Episode Quest. To complete one, you usually need to finish its required quest and fill the Ascension Gauge to 100% through activities such as Regional Quests, Sealed Dungeons, Strongholds and story progression.

How do I level up fast in AION 2?

Focus on the yellow Episode Quests and stop for side content only when an Ascension Gauge or a Gear Score requirement blocks you. Prioritise Regional Quests with useful accessories, nearby Sealed Dungeons and Strongholds instead of clearing the whole map while leveling.

How do I get better wings in AION 2?

You upgrade your Daeva Wings by progressing through the Ascension quest chain. The main upgrades are Lesser Wings from The One Who Perceives, Intermediate Wings from The One Who Hears the Voice, Superior Wings from The One Who Dreams and Ultimate Wings from The One Who Witnesses the Nightmare.

Should I open the reward cubes in leveling dungeons?

It is better not to. Opening a cube costs Odyle Energy, and the same resource pays for the much more valuable Conquest Expedition rewards at level 45. The only reasonable exception is a specific item you want, such as the extended weapon from Fire Temple for PvP.

Can I skip all side quests while leveling?

Almost. You still need enough side activities to fill each Ascension Gauge, because the Ascension quests give you your better wings. Everything else, including most Regional Quests, Feathers, Strongholds and Sealed Dungeons, can be postponed until after level 45, when it helps with Gear Score.
