1. How to Gear Up Fast in MoP Classic

  • Buy BoE gear from the Auction House or craft it to reach item level 435, which lets you queue for Celestial Dungeons.
  • Run Heroic dungeons for item level 463 and Valor Points.
  • Run Celestial Dungeons daily for August Stone Clusters and Season 3 gear.
  • Spend Valor on the 489 vendor gear from Golden Lotus, Klaxxi, Shado-Pan and August Celestials (details in our daily quests guide).
  • Do the Timeless Isle for BoA armor and the Legendary Cloak questline.
  • Kill the weekly world bosses (the four Celestials share one lockout) and then raid.

2. Dungeon Gearing in Mists of Pandaria Classic

Dungeons are the first stop. Normal and Heroic drop epic and rare pieces with the usual loot tables, and Celestial Dungeons, which replace Raid Finder in MoP Classic, add a catch-up path. You need item level 435 to queue for Heroic or Celestial Dungeons.

Dungeon Gear Item Level Breakdown

Dungeon type Item level Notes
Heroic dungeons 463 Valor Points; stepping stone to Celestial Dungeons and raids. Challenge Mode normalizes gear to this same 463
Celestial Dungeons (Season 3) 528 for vendor gear Need 435 to queue. Pay August Stone Clusters at Sendala the Timeless in the Shrine of Seven Stars or Two Moons. Cap on stored clusters is 70

Celestial Dungeons are the Phase 5 equivalent of Raid Finder. Season 3 launched on 16 June with new currency and loot, and Wowhead counts about 10 clusters per dungeon plus 7 for the daily quest and the first Celestial of the day.

Why Run Heroic Dungeons First?

  • A full set of item level 463 gear for every role.
  • Valor Points for the 489 faction gear.
  • Heroic gear is what Challenge Mode scales you to, so it helps there too (see our Challenge Mode guide).
  • It leads straight into Celestial Dungeons.

3. Mists of Pandaria Classic Reputation Gear

Reputation vendors fill the slots that dungeons miss. Most 489 pieces cost Valor Points and need Honored or Revered with the faction. In the first weeks of Phase 5, they are best treated as a bridge to Celestial and raid gear.

Reputation Gear by Faction

Faction Slots Standing
Golden Lotus Shoulders, rings; chests Honored; Revered
Shado-Pan Trinkets, cloaks; heads Honored; Revered
The Klaxxi Waists, necks; legs Honored; Revered
The August Celestials Hands, wrists, feet Honored
Operation: Shieldwall / Dominance Offensive Rings, trinket badges; waists, feet, medallions Honored; Revered

The list is from Zockify’s reputation pages and Warcraft Tavern; the item level of most pieces is 489.

How to Prioritize Reputations

  • Start with Golden Lotus, then Klaxxi, Shado-Pan and August Celestials. Buy each Grand Commendation at Revered.
  • Check which slot you are missing before spending Valor: a trinket from Shado-Pan is worth more than a second ring.
  • Valor is capped each week. Blizzard’s 5.5.0 notes gave 1,600 at launch, growing by 1,600 every week, so check your currency tab for the current cap.

4. Raid Gearing in Mists of Pandaria Classic

Raids give the highest item levels. There is no Raid Finder and no Flexible mode in MoP Classic: Blizzard confirmed that Flexible would not be added in Phase 5, and Celestial Dungeons play the Raid Finder role. Raids come in 10- and 25-player Normal and Heroic, with a weekly lockout.

MoP Classic Raid Gear Item Levels

Raid Normal Heroic Random upgrade
Mogu’shan Vaults 489 502 –
Heart of Fear and Terrace of Endless Spring 509, in places 516 (Warcraft Tavern; split by difficulty not confirmed) –
Throne of Thunder (Tier 15) 522 535 Thunderforged +6: 528 / 542
Siege of Orgrimmar (Tier 16) 553 566 Warforged +6: 559 / 572; Garrosh heirloom weapons 569 / 582

Throne of Thunder and Siege of Orgrimmar drops can be upgraded by Justice Points, so the random Thunderforged and Warforged versions are no longer required. In Siege of Orgrimmar non-Warforged gear upgrades by 14 item levels, and Warforged by 8 (Wowhead). Heart of Fear and Terrace values come from Warcraft Tavern’s Mogu’shan Vaults page, which does not split them by difficulty. Mogu’shan Vaults is described in our Mogu’shan Vaults guide.

Why Raiding Is Essential

  • Tier 15 and 16 tokens come only from the raids (the Tier 14 tokens from Heart of Fear and Terrace, and from Celestial Dungeons).
  • Trinkets and weapons from raids are usually best in slot (see our Warrior guide for an example list).
  • Drops follow fixed loot tables per boss.

Tier Sets: Tier 14, 15 and 16

This section replaces our separate Tier 14 sets guide. Phase 5 players wear Tier 16, so it lists set names, token sources and vendors rather than set bonuses.

5. Questing Gear in Mists of Pandaria Classic

The first gear you meet at 90 comes from quest chains in the Townlong Steppes, Dread Wastes and Vale of Eternal Blossoms. It will not carry you into Heroics, but it is enough to reach item level 435 together with a few BoE pieces from the Auction House, and the same chains open the daily quest hubs.

Quest Rewards Overview

Quest rewards at 90 are mostly rare-quality items. Together with a few Auction House pieces they get you to the item level 435 that Heroic and Celestial Dungeons ask for, and the same chains open the Golden Lotus hubs.

Why You Shouldn’t Skip Questing at 90

  • Some quest chains open daily hubs, which lead to the 489 reputation gear.
  • It replaces leveling gear without any random drops.
  • It starts the Legendary Cloak questline and Timeless Isle access for alts.

6. Mists of Pandaria Classic World Boss Gear

World bosses are a weekly loot opportunity. Sha of Anger and Galleon came with Phase 1, Oondasta (Isle of Giants) and Nalak (Isle of Thunder) with Phase 3, and the four Celestials (Chi-Ji, Niuzao, Xuen and Yu’lon) with Phase 5.

World Boss Loot Table and Locations

Boss Zone Notes
Sha of Anger Kun-Lai Summit Phase 1 world boss, killable immediately at 90
Galleon Valley of the Four Winds Phase 1 world boss
Oondasta Isle of Giants Added with Throne of Thunder (Phase 3)
Nalak Isle of Thunder Added with Throne of Thunder (Phase 3)
Chi-Ji, Niuzao, Xuen, Yu’lon Timeless Isle, Celestial Court One boss active at a time; shared weekly lockout and identical loot tables; no access requirement (Wowhead)
Ordos Timeless Isle See Wowhead’s Ordos guide for access and loot

World boss drops change with the phase, so check the boss’s loot list on Wowhead before you plan a weekly route around one item.

Weekly Strategy for Best Gains

  • Kill any Celestial once a week: killing more than one gives no extra loot.
  • Do the Timeless Isle rares for Timeless Coins: a rare drops 100 or more coins, Lesser Charms of Good Fortune, and occasionally a Timeless armor piece or a Burden of Eternity.
  • Cap your Valor each week.

Timeless Isle Gear in Phase 5

The Timeless Isle sells armor for Timeless Coins from Mistweaver Ai. A Timeless armor cache costs 7,500 coins and turns into an account-bound item level 496 piece for your loot specialization. Burden of Eternity (50,000 coins) upgrades one; the 535 trinkets Alacrity of Xuen, Contemplation of Chi-Ji, Discipline of Xuen, Resolve of Niuzao and Yu’lon’s Bite also cost 50,000. Other sources are the daily A Timeless Question (100 coins), the elite daily Path of the Mistwalker (1,000 coins) and rares. You cannot fly on the island, and the entry quest is A Flash of Bronze (Chromie at the Seat of Knowledge).

7. Mists of Pandaria Classic Crafted Gear

Crafted gear is best for the first days at 90 and for alts. In Phase 5 it is mainly a stopgap that you replace with Celestial and raid gear, so judge each piece by the item level on its tooltip against what you can already get.

Crafted Gear: Item Levels to Beat

Best source you can reach this week Item level Is a crafted piece worth it?
Quest gear only 435 is the queue requirement Yes, if it gets you to 435 for Heroic and Celestial Dungeons
Heroic dungeons 463 Only if the tooltip shows more than 463
Faction Valor gear 489 Only above 489, or for a slot no faction sells
Timeless Isle armor cache 496 Only above 496, and only if you would rather pay gold than farm Timeless Coins
Celestial Dungeons, Season 3 vendor 528 No, except to fill an empty slot for a day

Item levels are from the table at the top of this page; the decision column is our own rule of thumb. For the best profession per class, see our MoP Classic professions guide.

Buying Crafted Gear: What to Look For

  • Pick pieces with the secondary stats of your spec (Hit and Expertise first until capped).
  • Check for set bonuses from tailoring or leatherworking sets.
  • Compare against Heroic and Celestial gear: crafted pieces only win in slots where you have nothing.

8. Gearing Order for a New 90 in Phase 5

  1. Reach 435 with quest gear and Auction House BoE pieces.
  2. Run Heroic dungeons for 463 and Valor.
  3. Run a Celestial Dungeon each day for August Stone Clusters and Season 3 gear (528), and pick up Sigils and Titan Runestones for the Legendary Cloak there.
  4. Buy Timeless Isle armor caches for the slots that are still empty and farm the rares.
  5. Raid Throne of Thunder Normal, then Siege of Orgrimmar Normal. Take weekly Celestial and world bosses on the way.
  6. Finish the Legendary Cloak (see our guide) before Heroic Siege of Orgrimmar.

If you want to skip some of this, our MoP Classic gearing services cover dungeon, Timeless Isle and raid loot.
