MoP Classic Hunter Guide: Short Answer (October 2026)
Hunter advice below reflects Phase 5, which began with the Siege of Orgrimmar on 2 June 2026. Page reviewed on 12 October 2026.
For raiding, Beast Mastery is the strongest of the three hunter specializations in the Siege of Orgrimmar logs, and the easiest to play. Survival and Marksmanship follow, though Marksmanship is the hunter spec you see in arena teams. The hit and expertise caps are 7.5% each.

Mists of Pandaria Classic Hunter Updates
Hunters changed little going from Cataclysm to Mists of Pandaria: Focus is the resource and each rotation feels like the one before. The changes that matter:
- Talents are one choice out of three at levels 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90, and they are the same for all three specializations.
- Pets no longer have talent trees. Any pet can be Ferocity, Tenacity or Cunning, and every pet family brings a raid buff or debuff.
- Kill Command, Chimera Shot and Explosive Shot now apply Hunter’s Mark for you in combat.
- Glyphs no longer increase damage. There are no Prime glyphs.
Pet buffs are the hunter’s special raid contribution (see the Pets paragraph under Abilities).
Mists of Pandaria Classic Hunter Leveling
All three specializations level well. Beast Mastery is the smoothest: your pet takes the hits and you shoot from range. For a solo leveler, make the pet Tenacity so it tanks. In groups, make it Ferocity for damage. You do not need to tame a high-level pet, because tamed pets always start at least 5 levels below you.

Mists of Pandaria Classic Hunter Best Spec
- Beast Mastery: the strongest raid hunter in the SoO logs, with the best pet synergy, and the easiest to learn. Weak on self-healing.
- Survival: mobile, with traps, DoTs and Explosive Shot. The old claim that it is S-tier in raids does not match the logs.
- Marksmanship: the lowest in raids but the usual hunter in arena teams (RHS, TSG, Junglecleave and the Rogue/Ret/Hunter triple DPS).
Beast Mastery and Survival share the Kor’kron Hand Cannon as their best weapon. Marksmanship uses a bow, Hisek’s Reserve Longbow.
Mists of Pandaria Classic Hunter Abilities
- Beast Mastery: Kill Command, Focus Fire (use at 5 Frenzy stacks) and Bestial Wrath, which raises pet damage by 20% for 10 seconds and, through The Beast Within, your own damage by 10% and halves focus costs.
- Marksmanship: Chimera Shot, Aimed Shot (instant with Master Marksman) and Steady Shot twice to keep Steady Focus up.
- Survival: Explosive Shot, Black Arrow, Cobra Shot and Lock and Load, which lets you cast three Explosive Shots back to back.
- Shared: Serpent Sting, Kill Shot below 20% health, A Murder of Crows, Glaive Toss, Arcane Shot and Multi-Shot.

A normal raid already has most of these, so keep a few pets in your stable and pick the one your group lacks. Raid pets should be Ferocity, which gives the most damage and the best cooldowns.
Mists of Pandaria Classic Hunter Rotation
Before a pull, have Aspect of the Hawk up. Your first Kill Command (BM), Chimera Shot (MM) or Explosive Shot (SV) applies Hunter’s Mark.

AoE: for 2 to 4 targets, Beast Mastery and Survival swap Arcane Shot for Multi-Shot. With 5 or more targets BM uses Multi-Shot, Explosive Trap, Kill Shot, Crows and Glaive Toss, with Cobra Shot to refill. Marksmanship goes to the AoE list at 4+ targets: Steady Focus, Multi-Shot, instant Aimed Shot, Kill Shot, Crows, Glaive Toss and Steady Shot as filler.
Cooldowns: Rapid Fire raises ranged attack speed by 40% for 15 seconds and is the hunter’s biggest cooldown. Bestial Wrath (BM), Rabid (Ferocity pets), Stampede and Fervor are used together at the start of the fight and then on cooldown.

Reforging should land exactly on the hit and expertise caps and then prioritize critical strike, according to Icy Veins. Do not overcap. A reforging addon does this for you (see the MoP Classic addons guide).
MoP Classic Hunter Talent Build
Hunter talents are the same for every spec. Icy Veins’ picks for Beast Mastery:

Dire Beast is picked for Beast Mastery because the extra pet scales with Mastery. Marksmanship and Survival do not get that bonus, so check their spec pages for the level 60 choice.

Gems: use the legendary gem Crystallized Dread once you have it. The meta gem is Agile Primal Diamond. After the hit and expertise caps, a socket without a 60+ Agility match can take Delicate Primordial Ruby. Jewelcrafters can wear up to 3 Delicate Serpent’s Eye gems.
Mists of Pandaria Classic Hunter Combat Potions & Flasks
Use Virmen’s Bite with your damage cooldowns, as it is the default Beast Mastery potion. Flask of Spring Blossoms is the standard flask for all three specs. Carry Master Healing Potions for emergencies, because a hunter has few self-heals.
Mists of Pandaria Classic Hunter Best Race
Race has a small effect. Pandaren (either faction) gets Epicurean for food and Quaking Palm as a crowd-control option. Orcs get Blood Fury. Worgen get Viciousness for critical strike and Darkflight for mobility. Pick your faction and friends first.
Mists of Pandaria Classic Hunter PvP
Icy Veins ranks Hunter as an A-tier arena class. Marksmanship appears in several of the strongest 3v3 teams: RHS (Rogue, Marksmanship Hunter, Restoration Shaman), TSG (with Unholy Death Knight and Holy Paladin), Junglecleave (with Feral Druid) and a Rogue/Ret/Hunter triple DPS. In 2v2 it pairs with a Rogue.
- Scatter Shot into Freezing Trap is a core control chain.
- Disengage and Master’s Call give mobility to the whole team.
- Widow Venom reduces enemy healing.
- Binding Shot is a strong AoE stun.

- Focus is your resource. Cobra Shot and Steady Shot generate it. Fervor and Dire Beast also return focus.
