Midnight Inscription at a Glance
Inscription advice below was checked on 12 October 2026 for Midnight patch 12.1. The 13 October patch 12.1.5 cuts decor crafting costs, including Inscription recipes (see below). Recipe skill levels differ by a few points between sources, so confirm them in game.
Inscription makes missives, Vantus Runes, inks, staves, off-hands, bows, profession tools and Darkmoon cards. Midnight rebuilt it around four specialization trees and a single currency, Artisan Scribe’s Moxie. Icy Veins puts Inscription in the S tier of gold-making professions (6 August 2026), next to Jewelcrafting, Tailoring and Alchemy potions.
| Question | Answer |

| Raw materials | Herbs: Tranquility Bloom, Argentleaf, Azeroot, Mana Lily and Sanguithorn. Each mill uses 10 herbs and gives pigment |
| Main products | Six combat missives and seven profession missives, a Vantus Rune, staves, bows, off-hands, tools, contracts and Darkmoon cards |
| Recipe currency | Artisan Scribe’s Moxie. It replaces Artisan’s Acuity, and works only for Inscription recipes from vendors |

What Changed From The War Within
| Area | The War Within | Midnight |
|---|---|---|
| Reagent quality | Three tiers | Only Silver and Gold are left |
| Recipe currency | Artisan’s Acuity, one pool for every profession | Artisan Scribe’s Moxie, which pays for Inscription recipes and nothing else |
| Profession gear | Rare gear | Epic tools are added: they have more secondary stats than rare gear at the same base skill. Epic tool recipes cost 150 Moxie from the vendor Lelorian |
| Weapons | Staves, batons, crutches and torches | Inscription also crafts bows |
| Darkmoon cards | Archival Additions tree | Darkmoon Curiosity specialization, with four suits (Blood, Hunt, Rot, Void) |
| Vantus Runes | A separate rune recipe for each raid | Vantus Rune: Radiant, learned from the trainer at skill 50. wow-professions.com says only one rune is available per raid tier |
Leveling Inscription From 1 to 100
Method’s route (5 March 2026) is built around milling herbs first and then crafting what the trainer teaches.
| Skill | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 to 20 | Mill herbs |
| 21 to 25 | Learn from the trainer and craft 2 Munsell Ink, 2 Sienna Ink, 2 Soul Cipher, Faunatender’s Baton, Floratender’s Crutch and Rootwarden’s Lamp. Spend 10 Knowledge Points in Calm Hands |
| 26 to 35 | Hobbyist Scribe’s Quill, Codified Azeroot, Hobbyist Alchemist’s Mixing Rod and Hobbyist Rolling Pin |
| 35 to 50 | The four early Missives (Aurora, Feverflare, Harmonious, Fireflash). Then Thalassian Treatises on Inscription up to 45. Then Missive of the Quickblade, Missive of the Peerless and three more Treatises to reach 50 |
| 50 to 90 | Learn Vantus Rune: Radiant and craft one for the knowledge point, then craft Treatises to 90. Recipes turn yellow at 80, green at 90 and gray at 95 |
| 90 to 100 | Buy recipes from the Moxie vendor or learn them through the knowledge trees |
Method’s material total for the whole route: 1,500 Tranquility Bloom; 400 each of Argentleaf, Mana Lily and Sanguithorn; 57 Azeroot; 384 Thalassian Songwater; 52 Lexicologist’s Vellum; about 47 Motes (mostly Wild) for the Treatises; and a small number of other Motes, 2 Duskshrouded Stone and 2 Petrified Root. Herb quality changes skill gain but not pigment yield, so mill the cheapest herbs.
Key Recipes and Where to Learn Them
Skill levels below are from wow-professions.com. Method gives a slightly different order in its leveling route, so confirm in game.
| Category | Recipes | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Inks and reagents | Sienna Ink (skill 10), Munsell Ink (15), Soul Cipher (20), Codified Azeroot (25) | Trainer |
| Combat missives | Aurora (25), Feverflare (25), Fireflash (35), Harmonious (35), Peerless (45), Quickblade (45) | Trainer |
| Profession missives | Crafting Speed, Deftness, Finesse, Ingenuity, Multicraft, Perception, Resourcefulness | Lelorian |
| Vantus Rune | Vantus Rune: Radiant (skill 50) | Trainer |
| Starter weapons | Faunatender’s Baton, Floratender’s Crutch and Rootwarden’s Lamp (20), Faunatender’s Trust bow (35) | Trainer |
| Specialization weapons | Aln’hara Cane, Lantern, Pikestaff and Sprigshot (bow) | Blueprints tree |
| PvP weapons | Thalassian Competitor’s bow, staff, pillar and lamp, and trinkets | Mirvedon, Silvermoon City |
| Tools | Hobbyist Scribe’s Quill (green), Sin’dorei Quill (blue), Gilded Sin’dorei Quill (epic); epic recipes cost 150 Moxie. Blue tools come from the Blueprints tree | Lelorian / Blueprints |
| Contracts | One per faction at renown 5: Amani Tribe (Magovu), Hara’ti (Naynar), Silvermoon Court (Caeris Fairdawn) and The Singularity (Void Researcher Anomander) | Faction vendors |
| Darkmoon | Inscribe and Transcribe recipes for each suit; Darkmoon Sigils; Darkmoon Dominion trinkets (item level 220, 5 ranks) | Darkmoon Curiosity tree |
Darkmoon decks work like this: you craft or find individual cards, collect all eight cards of a suit into a deck, and that deck lets you craft a Darkmoon Dominion trinket. Method adds that stronger decks need Sparks, and that the base deck is under-budget for its item level. Epic gear is bind-on-pickup, so you make it through crafting orders for other players; uncommon and rare gear can be sold on the Auction House.
Specializations and Builds
Specialization trees open at Inscription skill 25, 50, 60 and 75 (wow-professions.com). Calm Hands is the first one to take: 10 points in it fill the main wheel and open the other three trees.
| Tree | What it gives |
|---|---|
| Calm Hands | Crafting stats (Multicraft, Resourcefulness, Ingenuity) and a bonus Knowledge Point from the weekly Treatise. Dextrous Diligens adds multicraft and Keen Eye returns materials |
| Blueprints | Staves, bows, off-hands and profession tools. Staves needs 15 points for two staff recipes; Lamps and Lanterns (under Field Research) needs 15 for an off-hand; Market Research needs 30 for three tool recipes; 30 points fill the Blueprints wheel |
| Perfect Products | Quality for milling, inks, ciphers, missives, contracts and Vantus Runes. 30 points fill the wheel and open Perfect Missives and Perfect Milling; the Processing branch has Perfect Inks and Perfect Ciphers; the Parchment branch opens Perfect Contracts and Perfect Vantus Runes |
| Darkmoon Curiosity | Darkmoon cards, trinkets and sigils for all four suits |
Method describes two gold builds. Blueprints makes weapons, off-hands and tools for work orders, which pays best early in an expansion. Perfect Products makes rank 2 materials, missives and contracts for the Auction House. The wow-professions.com specialization guide points out that there are 13 missives but only one Vantus Rune per raid tier, so missives have much more demand. Nightborne get +5 Inscription skill from Ancient History, and Kul Tiran get +2 to all professions.
Knowledge Points and the 12.1 Reset
Sources disagree by a point or two, so these are ranges.
| Source | Knowledge Points |
|---|---|
| Learning a new recipe | 1 each |
| Weekly quest | 3 (Method) or 4 (wow-professions.com) |
| Patron crafting orders | 12 to 16 a week; fewer if you lack the recipe or miss the quality target |
| Weekly drops and repeatable treasures | 4 |
| Thalassian Treatise on Inscription | 1, or 2 with Calm Hands |
| Skill book from Naynar (Hara’ti renown 6; 75 Moxie and 750 Voidlight Marl) | 10, one time |
| Eight profession treasures in Midnight zones | 3 each, 24 in total, one time |
| Darkmoon Faire profession quest (Sayge) | 3 per month, plus 2 skill points |
wow-professions.com estimates about 19 Knowledge Points a week. The 12.1 reset: every Midnight profession can have its Knowledge Points reset once. All spent points are refunded and recipes learned through them are unlearned (Method). Use it only if your first build was wrong.
Making Gold With Inscription
Icy Veins puts Inscription in the S tier because it has good Concentration builds for consumable production and, from Season 2, good gear crafting: players want two-handed Intellect and Agility weapons, rings and cloth gear. Missives are the volume product: there are 13 of them against one Vantus Rune per raid tier. Patron orders also feed your Knowledge Points.
- Time your sales. Icy Veins advises selling consumables on raid days (typically Wednesday, Sunday and Tuesday), buying materials when they are cheap and tracking prices on The Undermine Exchange.
- Gear crafting. Icy Veins expects demand for two-handed weapons in Season 2, and Inscription makes staves and bows. Save your Concentration for busy periods, when competing crafters run out first.
- Housing decor. The 12.1.5 PTR list had 62 Inscription decor recipes among about 249 whose crafting costs were cut. Release details may differ; read our housing guide for the decor system.
