Expertise is the progression system of The Division 2 that Title Update 15 introduced. It raises the Grade of weapons, brands, gear sets, named items, exotics and skill variants, and with it their base stats. This lot raises your Expertise Level on PC, PlayStation or Xbox, with the Leveling slider, which runs from level 1 to 30 in four zones.

How Expertise works

The number of times you can raise the Grade of an item equals your Expertise Level.
You may only upgrade items you are Proficient with. Proficiency Rank tops out at 10 and grows by using an item in combat, by donating matching items or by donating materials.
Expertise and Proficiency progress is account wide, and the work is done at the Recalibration Station in the Base of Operations or the haven, on the Expertise tab.
Brands and gear sets train together, so one set of proficiency covers all compatible pieces.

Where the cap is

The maximum Expertise Level rises when new items join the game: it went from 20 to 21 in Title Update 16 and to 26 in Title Update 21 (11 June 2024), and it stands at 30 today.
The slider's four zones cover levels 1 to 10, 10 to 15, 15 to 25 and 25 to 30. The team confirms the start and target level in live chat or on Discord.

Do I need to own an item before I can train it?

No. You can see every item available for research in the Expertise tab, and you develop its proficiency without holding a copy.
