Poison Stacks Limit: What Does It Mean in Last Epoch?

In Last Epoch, the concept of Poison Stacks is crucial for players who aim to maximize their damage output. Poison is a damage-over-time (DoT) ailment that deals Poison Damage (a sub-type of Elemental/DoT) and interacts with specific resistance-shredding mechanics. Unlike many other ARPGs, Last Epoch allows for infinite scaling through stack application.

Understanding Poison Mechanics

Poison functions as a damaging ailment with a base duration of 3 seconds. Its power comes not just from the damage it deals, but from its secondary effect: Resistance Shredding.

  • Base Damage: Each stack deals a fixed amount of Poison damage (28 base damage over 3 seconds).
  • Inherent Shred: The first 30 stacks of Poison also reduce the enemy's Poison Resistance (by 5% per stack for mobs, 2% for bosses). This means the more you poison an enemy, the more damage they take from subsequent poisons.
  • Independent Duration: Each stack has its own independent timer. If you stop attacking, stacks will fall off one by one as their 3-second window expires.
Myth Buster: There is NO Hard Limit to the number of Poison stacks you can apply. You can apply 100, 500, or even 1,000+ stacks on a boss if your attack speed and poison duration are high enough.

Strategies to Maximize Poison Damage

Since there is no hard cap, the goal is to apply stacks faster than they expire. Strategies include:

  • Attack Speed: The most critical stat. Doubling your attack speed effectively doubles your maximum stable stack count.
  • Poison Duration: Increasing duration (e.g., from 3s to 6s) keeps stacks active longer, allowing you to reach a higher total count before the first ones begin to expire.
  • Chance to Poison: You can exceed 100% chance. If you have 350% Chance to Poison, every hit applies 3 stacks guaranteed, with a 50% chance for a 4th stack.
