Overwhelming Malice: What Does It Mean in Game?

Overwhelming Malice is a notable passive skill from the original Path of Exile, not a Path of Exile 2 mechanic. It appears only on Cluster Jewels and gives you a 10% chance to gain Unholy Might for 4 seconds when you land a critical strike. Path of Exile 2 players run into the name because PoE2 has a similar-sounding skill called Malice and its own version of Unholy Might.

How It Works

In Path of Exile 1, a Cluster Jewel is socketed into one of the large jewel sockets on the outer edge of the passive tree and adds a small branch of new passives. Overwhelming Malice is one of the notables that can roll on that branch. Its single line of text works like this:

  • Trigger: every critical strike you land has a 10% chance to activate it.
  • Effect: you gain the Unholy Might buff for 4 seconds.
  • Unholy Might today: the current in-game tooltip says the buff converts 100% of your physical damage to chaos damage and gives a 25% chance to apply Withered on hit. Older guides describe it as 30% of physical damage gained as extra chaos damage; that was the version before a rework, so check the date of any guide you read.

Because the buff converts physical damage to chaos while it lasts, the notable works best for builds that already scale chaos damage, such as poison and chaos attack builds with a high critical strike chance.

Where You'll See It

According to PoEDB, Overwhelming Malice can appear on two kinds of Cluster Jewel in Path of Exile 1:

  • Large Cluster Jewel with the enchantment "12% increased Chaos Damage".
  • Medium Cluster Jewel with the enchantment "15% increased Critical Strike Chance".

PoEDB lists both versions as prefixes at level 68, so the jewel needs an item level of at least 68 for the notable to roll. Players either buy a jewel that already has the notable or roll new prefixes until it appears.

The Path of Exile 2 Situation

As of the current PoE2 item data, Cluster Jewels are not in Path of Exile 2. PoE2 jewels are Rubies, Emeralds, Sapphires, Diamonds, their Time-Lost versions, and Timeless Jewels, so Overwhelming Malice cannot be found there. Two PoE2 mechanics are easy to confuse with it:

  • Malice (skill): a persistent aura skill granted by the Omen Sceptre. It keeps applying Critical Weakness to enemies in your Presence, which makes them easier to critically hit. It has nothing to do with Unholy Might.
  • Unholy Might in PoE2: a separate buff that grants 30% of all damage as extra chaos damage. Sources in current data include the Lich ascendancy (Necromantic Conduit), the Kurgal's Leash lineage support for minion builds, and the Vis Mortis body armour for minions.

Tips

  • Check which game a guide is for. Many pages mix PoE1 and PoE2 terms. If a guide mentions Cluster Jewels or Overwhelming Malice, it is a PoE1 guide.
  • In PoE1, pair it with real crit chance. A 10% trigger chance only keeps the buff up reliably if you crit often and hit fast.
  • In PoE1, scale chaos, not physical. With the current Unholy Might your physical damage becomes chaos while the buff is active, so chaos and poison modifiers get the value.
  • In PoE2, look at Malice and Lich instead. For crit-focused builds, the Malice aura's Critical Weakness is the closest equivalent; for an Unholy Might build, look at the Lich ascendancy and minion support options.

FAQ

Is Overwhelming Malice in Path of Exile 2?

No. It is a Path of Exile 1 Cluster Jewel notable, and Cluster Jewels are not part of PoE2's current item pool.

What does Unholy Might do?

It depends on the game. In current Path of Exile 1 it converts 100% of physical damage to chaos and can apply Withered. In Path of Exile 2 it grants 30% of all damage as extra chaos damage.

What is the Malice skill in PoE2?

Malice is an aura from the Omen Sceptre that repeatedly applies Critical Weakness to nearby enemies, raising your chance to land critical hits on them.

Item and passive data for PoE2 can be checked on PoE2DB.
