What does it mean – Active Add?

Active Add refers to a non-boss enemy that has joined an encounter and is currently alive, attacking, or contributing to the fight in World of Warcraft. The term is commonly used in raids, dungeons, and PvP scenarios to distinguish between adds that are currently active threats versus those that have yet to spawn or have already been defeated.

In boss encounters, "Active Add" management is a critical component of success—players must prioritize add control through interrupts, crowd control, or focused DPS. Some bosses summon waves of adds throughout the fight, and keeping track of which adds are active versus incoming is key to proper threat management, healing throughput, and positioning.

Tanks often need to grab threat on active adds immediately to prevent them from targeting healers or DPS. Failing to manage active adds efficiently can quickly overwhelm a group, especially in Mythic+, raid phases, or PvP battlegrounds involving NPC reinforcements.
