What does it mean – Auto-Assist Mode?

Auto-Assist Mode refers to a gameplay setting or system that automatically targets or aids allies during combat, reducing the need for manual targeting in group content. In World of Warcraft, this concept is commonly associated with targeting macros, assist keybindings, or interface settings that allow players to automatically focus the tank’s or group leader’s target—streamlining coordination in raids, dungeons, or PvP battlegrounds.

Auto-Assist is especially useful for DPS and healers who need to react quickly without manually cycling through enemies or allies. For example, in party-based content, a DPS player can use a macro like /assist focus to automatically attack the same target as the tank or raid leader, improving kill priority and burst efficiency.

While there’s no official “Auto-Assist Mode” toggle in WoW’s UI, the functionality is widely used through custom macros, addon configurations, and interface enhancements. Some classes also make use of assist-style behavior in pet control (e.g. Hunters or Warlocks), where pets follow the player’s lead in targeting.
