What does it mean – Auto-Defend?

Auto-Defend refers to a game mechanic or pet behavior in World of Warcraft where a character or summoned unit automatically retaliates when attacked, without requiring manual input from the player. This is most commonly associated with Hunter, Warlock, and Death Knight pets, which can be set to Auto-Defend mode to automatically engage enemies that damage their master or themselves.

Auto-Defend improves survivability and simplifies pet control, especially in solo questing, open-world farming, or casual dungeon runs. When a pet is set to Auto-Defend, it will react to aggression immediately—drawing threat and potentially preventing the player from being interrupted or overwhelmed.

This behavior is adjustable in the pet’s command bar, where players can toggle between Passive, Defensive, and Assist stances. In Defensive mode, pets utilize Auto-Defend behavior as a baseline—responding when the player or themselves are struck. However, in higher-end raids or PvP, this can sometimes lead to unintended pulls or aggro issues, so experienced players may choose full manual control.
