Chrono Shift in WoW

Chrono Shift is an Arcane Mage talent in World of Warcraft: when your Arcane Barrage hits an enemy, it slows that enemy and briefly increases your own movement speed. It was added in Legion (patch 7.1.5, January 2017). In retail Midnight it exists only as an Arcane PvP talent, where its current tooltip reads: Arcane Barrage slows enemies by 30% and increases your movement speed by 10% for 5 seconds.

Despite the name, Chrono Shift doesn't rewind time, reset cooldowns or reverse damage. It is a kiting tool: it helps an Arcane Mage keep distance from melee enemies while dealing damage.

Numbers have been tuned often, especially in PvP. If you are theorycrafting, check the live tooltip; the Warcraft Wiki records another PvP hotfix in September 2026.

How it is used

Kiting melee. Arcane Barrage is instant, so a Mage can fire it while moving away; the slow keeps the attacker from closing the gap, and the speed bonus adds a little distance.
Arena and battlegrounds. As a PvP talent it competes with other PvP talents for a slot; it is picked when the enemy team has melee that chase the Mage.
Not a PvE talent in Midnight. PvP talents are active only in PvP combat (War Mode, battlegrounds, arenas), so it does nothing in dungeons or raids today.

Is Chrono Shift in Classic?

No. It was added in Legion, long after the expansions that the Classic branches cover. Classic Era, TBC Anniversary and MoP Classic Mages don't have it; their slowing tools are spells such as Frostbolt, Cone of Cold and, in TBC and later, Slow for Arcane.

Spells people confuse with Chrono Shift

Several spells with "time" themes exist, and old articles mixed them up. No other WoW spell is called Chrono Shift. If you are looking for an effect that "rewinds" a fight, that is a different spell (for example the Mage's Alter Time); if you meant a cooldown reset, Mages have had Cold Snap for Frost.
