Gem Carrier in Brawl Stars: What Does It Mean?

A Gem Carrier in Brawl Stars is the player on a Gem Grab team who picks up and holds most of the team's gems. Because a defeated Brawler drops every gem they carry, the gem carrier is both the most valuable and the most targeted player on the map, and their survival often decides the match.

How It Works

Gem Grab is a 3v3 mode. According to the Brawl Stars Wiki:

  • A gem mine in the middle of the map produces a purple gem every 7 seconds.
  • A team needs to hold 10 gems between its players. When it does, a 15-second countdown starts. If the countdown reaches zero, that team wins.
  • When a Brawler is defeated, they drop all their gems. If that pushes the team below 10, or the other team ties the count, the countdown stops and resets.
  • No more than 29 gems can be in play at once, and the mine pauses while 15 gems are lying on the ground.
  • If the match timer runs out before a countdown finishes, the team holding more gems wins.

Gems count for the whole team, so any player can carry them. Most teams still funnel gems to one player, the carrier, so that the other two can fight more aggressively without risking the team's total.

Who Makes a Good Gem Carrier

The wiki's Gem Grab page highlights several Brawlers who suit the role or support it:

  • Pam and Poco: sturdy, can heal themselves and teammates, and stay in fights around the mine.
  • Bo: his Super can mine the gem spawn, and placing mines at his own feet punishes enemies who chase him while he holds gems.
  • Gene and Tara: not always carriers themselves, but their Supers can pull the enemy carrier out of position and swing a match.
  • Rosa: her Super lets her dive the mine and escape, and she can chase down an enemy carrier.

In general, look for a Brawler who can survive a mid-range trade, has some healing or escape tool, and can still threaten enemies who walk into the middle. Balance changes shift who is strongest, so check recent patch notes rather than relying on an old tier list.

Tips

  1. Do not lead the push while carrying. Let your teammates take the first trades. The carrier should be the last one in and the first one out.
  2. Back off when the countdown starts. With 10 or more gems and the timer running, retreat toward your spawn and use walls and bushes. You do not need kills to win.
  3. Spread gems only on purpose. If your carrier is in danger, it can be safer for a teammate to grab new gems so one death does not erase the lead.
  4. Collect dropped gems immediately. When anyone dies near the middle, the gems they drop are up for grabs, and recovering them is often worth more than a kill.
  5. Protect, do not just shadow. Teammates should hold the lanes the enemy uses to reach the carrier, not stand next to them where one area attack hits both.
  6. Track the enemy carrier. Focus fire on whoever holds their gems. One well-timed elimination can reset their countdown and flip the score.

FAQ

What happens when the gem carrier dies?

They drop every gem they were holding on the spot. If the team falls below 10 gems as a result, the countdown resets and the other team can pick the gems up.

Do I have to give all gems to one player?

No. Gems count for the team, so anyone can hold them. A single carrier is just a common way to protect the lead and let the others play aggressively.

How many gems do you need to win Gem Grab?

Ten in standard 3v3, held through a 15-second countdown. The 5v5 version on maps with two gem mines requires 20.
