Gentleman's Agreement in Call of Duty: What Does It Mean?

In the high-stakes world of Call of Duty League (CDL) and high-level Ranked Play, the Gentleman’s Agreement (GA) is the set of "Shadow Rules" that dictates the meta.
While the game developers (Treyarch, Sledgehammer, Infinity Ward) set the official rules, the professional players often feel these rules are too loose to ensure a truly competitive environment.
Here is a breakdown of why these agreements exist, how they are enforced, and what is currently "blacklisted" by the pros.

The Purpose: Why Official Rules Aren't Enough

Developers design Call of Duty for casual fun, meaning they include weapons that are "easy to use" or "overpowered" to help lower-skill players get kills.
  • The Pro Perspective: In the hands of a professional with perfect aim, an "easy-to-use" weapon becomes a game-breaking laser beam that kills instantly.
  • The GA Solution: Pros vote to ban items that lower the Skill Gap. If a gun kills so fast that you can't react, or if an attachment gives you "wall-hacks," the pros agree not to use it to keep the game fair and entertaining.

Commonly "GA'd" Items

GAs evolve every season, but certain categories are almost always restricted in pro play (and usually filter down to Ranked Play):
CategoryTypical GA RestrictionsWhy?WeaponsLMGs, Shotguns, Marksman RiflesLMGs have too much ammo/damage; Shotguns require no aim; Marksman rifles often kill in 1-2 shots (too fast).AttachmentsSuppressors, Thermal Sights, High-Caliber AmmoSuppressors hide you from the minimap (removing the skill of reading the map); High-Caliber rounds melt players too quickly.EquipmentSmokes (in Respawn), FlashbangsSmokes are often limited to 1 per team (in Search & Destroy only) to prevent "smoke spam." Flashbangs are often banned because they blind the screen entirely (white screen), whereas Stuns just slow movement.SettingsAutomatic Tactical Sprint (ATS)Pros believe movement should be a manual skill. Automating it removes a layer of mechanical difficulty.StreaksUAV, Counter-UAV, Advanced UAVThese provide "free info." In competitive CoD, you should have to earn info by communicating with your team, not by getting a streak.

How is it Enforced? (The "Blacklist")

Since these rules are not programmed into the game, what stops a team from breaking a GA to win a grand final?
  • Social Pressure: The CDL is a small circle of 12 teams.
  • The Punishment: If a team breaks a GA, the other 11 teams will Blacklist them. This means no other pro team will practice (scrim) against them.
  • The Consequence: A team that cannot practice effectively will eventually lose their competitive edge. The fear of being blacklisted is usually enough to keep everyone in line.

Ranked Play vs. GAs

  • The Disconnect: In Ranked Play, you are playing by the Official Rules, not the GAs.
  • The Friction: You might equip a weapon (like the Holger 556 or a specific Knife) that is technically allowed in Ranked, only to have teammates yell at you for using it. This is because high-rank players often try to honor the Pro GAs even in public matches.
  • The Update Cycle: Often, if something is GA'd by pros for a long time, the developers will eventually issue an update to officially ban it in Ranked Play, aligning the two rule sets.
Current Meta Note (2026 Context): In recent titles like Modern Warfare III and Black Ops 6, the "Snaking" movement mechanic (rapidly crouching and standing behind cover) was heavily GA'd. Pros agreed that if anyone was caught "snaking" intentionally, their team would forfeit the map. This shows GAs now extend to movement exploits, not just weapons.
