What is Dune: Awakening?
Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival game with MMO features, set on the desert planet Arrakis from Frank Herbert's Dune universe. It is developed and published by Funcom, with additional development by NUKKLEAR, and built on Unreal Engine 5. It launched on PC on June 10, 2025 and arrived on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 22, 2026, alongside a full single-player mode.
Story and Setting
The game is set in an alternate timeline in which Paul Atreides is never born. Lady Jessica has a daughter instead, House Atreides survives, and the Atreides and Harkonnens fight a "War of Assassins" on Arrakis. Meanwhile, the Fremen have vanished. You play an undercover agent of the Bene Gesserit sent to find the missing Fremen, with the story building toward a figure called "the Sleeper". The September 2026 update completed Book One of the storyline.
How It Plays
You start by creating a character and choosing a background and mentor, which shape your early abilities. Bene Gesserit training, for example, unlocks abilities such as the Voice. From there, survival comes first: you manage thirst with stillsuits and water, deal with heat, sandstorms and Sardaukar patrols, and avoid the sandworms that hunt anything making noise on open sand.
- Base building and crafting: gather resources, build bases in open regions, and craft weapons, armor and vehicles such as ornithopters and Sandcrawlers.
- Spice: harvest Spice Sand from spice fields and refine it into Melange, the key trade good and crafting material.
- Factions: side with House Atreides or House Harkonnen. Their hubs are Arrakeen and Harko Village.
- Landsraad: in the endgame, guilds use influence in the Landsraad to affect the game world.
- Dungeons: underground ecological testing stations act as dungeons.
Regions and the Deep Desert
Most players begin in the Hagga Basin, which holds most of the story and building. The Deep Desert is a PvP-focused area with the richest spice. Each week a Coriolis storm sweeps through, resets the Deep Desert and shuffles resource nodes in the Hagga Basin, keeping the endgame map changing.
Platforms and Modes
- PC: launched June 10, 2025 on Steam, with early access from June 5 for Deluxe and Ultimate edition owners.
- PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S: launched September 22, 2026, with Xbox Game Pass access from the same day.
- Single-player: version 1.5 added a full solo mode with preset difficulty levels and adjustable settings such as harvesting rates and sandstorms. Solo characters stay in that mode.
- Multiplayer: play in PvE areas or join optional PvP in the Deep Desert and faction conflict.
