Ability Scaling in WoW

Ability scaling is how much stronger your abilities get as your stats grow. In World of Warcraft almost every damage, healing and shield ability has a base value plus a share of your attack power or spell power, called its coefficient. Better gear raises your power, the coefficient turns that power into extra damage or healing, and secondary stats then multiply the result. The rules differ a lot between retail and Classic.

Retail (Midnight): coefficients of your power

  • Primary stats become power. Each point of Strength or Agility gives 1 attack power (since patch 6.0.2), and each point of Intellect gives casters 1 spell power.
  • Tooltips show the coefficient. Abilities are written as a percentage of your power. For example, Power Word: Shield absorbs damage equal to several times your spell power, and Arcane Surge hits for a large multiple of it. Doubling your spell power roughly doubles that part of the ability.
  • Secondary stats multiply. Critical strike, haste, mastery and versatility change how often abilities crit, how fast you cast and how much specific effects deal, on top of the coefficient.
  • Item level drives everything. Higher item level means more primary stat on each item, so in retail upgrading item level is the main way abilities scale up.

Classic: +damage, +healing and the 3.5 rule

The original game used separate +spell damage and +healing stats on gear; they were merged into one spell power stat only in Wrath of the Lich King (patch 3.0.2). Classic Era and TBC Anniversary still use the old system, and the community has worked out how much of your bonus each spell receives:

Spell typeShare of your +damage / +healing
Direct spellCast time ÷ 3.5 (a 3.5 s cast gets 100%; instants count as 1.5 s, about 43%)
Damage or heal over timeDuration ÷ 15 (a 15 s effect gets 100%)
Spells with both partsSplit between the direct and periodic parts
Spells learned below level 20Further penalty: 1 − (20 − spell level) × 0.0375

These are community formulas from testing, not official numbers, but they explain the classic advice: long casts such as a max-rank Frostbolt or Greater Heal benefit most from gear, while instant spells benefit less per cast.

Downranking follows from this. Lower ranks of a heal cost much less mana but still receive most of your +healing, so Classic healers often use low ranks for efficiency. The level penalty in the table stops very low ranks from being too good.

Physical classes scale differently: in Classic, Strength and Agility turn into attack power at class-specific rates, and abilities that use weapon damage scale with the weapon itself, which is why slow, hard-hitting weapons matter so much (see attack delay).

Level scaling: zones and dungeons

"Scaling" also refers to content that adjusts to your level:

  • Zone level scaling (retail): enemies scale to your level within a range. It started with Legion's Broken Isles (patch 7.0.3) and was extended to the whole world in patch 7.3.5 (January 2018).
  • Chromie Time (retail, since patch 9.0.1): lets you pick an older expansion's campaign and level through it, with enemies scaled to you.
  • Timewalking (retail): scales your character and gear down to an older dungeon's level.
  • Classic versions have no level scaling: zones have fixed levels, and outleveling them makes enemies trivial.

PvP scaling

Retail tunes many abilities separately for PvP. Patch notes often list changes that apply "in PvP combat" only, and some abilities deal a different share of their PvE damage against players. If an ability feels weaker in arenas than in raids, a PvP modifier is the usual reason.

Practical tips

  • Read the tooltip in game. Retail tooltips update with your stats, which is the easiest way to see scaling in action.
  • Don't chase one stat blindly. In retail, stat priorities differ by spec and change with patches; use a current guide for your spec.
  • In Classic, match spells to gear. With lots of +healing, long heals and downranked heals both gain; with little, efficiency matters more than coefficient.

FAQ

What is a spell coefficient?

The share of your spell power or attack power an ability adds to its damage or healing. A 100% coefficient adds your full power once.

Does Intellect increase damage in WoW?

In retail, yes: for casters each point of Intellect is a point of spell power. In Classic, Intellect mainly gives mana and spell crit; damage comes from +spell damage on gear.

Why do low-rank spells get less bonus in Classic?

Spells learned below level 20 have an extra penalty to their coefficient, so very low ranks can't be used as cheap, full-power spells.
