Innocence in Final Fantasy: What Does It Mean?

In Final Fantasy XIV, Innocence is the Lightwarden of Kholusia and one of the major bosses of the Shadowbringers expansion (patch 5.0). It is the monstrous form taken by Lord Vauthry, the ruler of Eulmore, and players fight it in The Crown of the Immaculate trial and its harder Extreme version. Spoiler note: this page touches on the late Shadowbringers story.

How It Works

Lord Vauthry was raised as Eulmore's untouchable king and is part human, part Sin Eater. Late in the Shadowbringers main story he transforms into Innocence and declares he will rule creation as a perfect being. You face him in two versions of the same arena:

  • The Crown of the Immaculate is the level 79 main scenario trial, unlocked by the quest Extinguishing the Last Light. It is a full party fight with a 60-minute time limit and appears in the Trials roulette.
  • The Crown of the Immaculate (Extreme) is the level 80 challenge version, unlocked by the quest Minstrel from Another Mother. It skips the opening section against Vauthry, starts with the transformed boss and has an 11-minute enrage.

Key Mechanics

In the story version, the first phase mixes party-wide damage with adds and two tricky checks: four Sinsphere meteor circles that must each be soaked by a player, and an Enthrall gaze you must look away from. Innocence then fully heals and the real fight begins, with a checkpoint if your party wipes. Important attacks in that phase include:

  • Righteous Bolt, a single-target tankbuster;
  • Winged Reprobation, swords embedded in the arena that fire sets of line attacks, and Rightful Reprobation, eight swords that fly out as lines and then return along the same paths;
  • Soul and Body, a rotating S-shaped attack you dodge by moving with it;
  • Flaming Sword, an add phase where you must kill the tethered Forgiven Shame adds before they are sacrificed, then defeat Forgiven Venery before the Immaculate Authority meter fills;
  • God Ray cones, the Light Pillar line stack and the Beatific Vision charge across the arena.

The Extreme version adds a mandatory tank swap after Righteous Bolt, tethered sword attacks that must be pulled away from the party, and Starbirth orbs that explode into large circles when one of the boss's attacks hits them.

The name is deliberate irony: Vauthry believes himself flawless and sinless, the embodiment of perfection, while the story shows the opposite. That contrast is a big part of why the fight is remembered as one of the expansion's key moments.

Rewards

  • Both versions can drop the Innocence Card for Triple Triad.
  • Extreme gives one Immaculate Totem per clear plus Allagan Tomestones of Poetics. Totems are exchanged with Fathard in Eulmore: five for an Immaculate accessory, or 99 for the Innocent Gwiber Trumpet mount.
  • The Extreme coffer can also drop Immaculate accessories, the Innocent Gwiber Trumpet and the orchestrion roll of the battle theme Insanity.
  • Blue Mages can learn Winged Reprobation from Innocence, a spell added in patch 6.45.

Tips

  • Treat the Sinsphere circles as mandatory soaks; empty circles spread damage to the whole party.
  • During Flaming Sword, focus the tethered Shame adds first. Each sacrifice adds a damage vulnerability that makes the final hit far more dangerous.
  • Watch where swords land during Rightful Reprobation, because their return path follows the same pattern seconds later.
  • For mount farming, totems are guaranteed per clear, so repeated clears reach 99 even with bad coffer luck.
