Spice Silo in Dune: Awakening - What Does It Mean?

"Spice Silo" is not the name of a buildable in Dune: Awakening. Players use it informally for the place where their spice is stored, whether that is a storage container in a base, a refinery's input slots or a Sandcrawler's tank. In the game, spice is held as items: raw Spice Sand and refined Spice Melange, kept in normal storage.

How Spice Storage Works

There is no dedicated spice tank. Instead, you use the same storage pieces as for any other resource:

  • Storage Containers: placed near your Sub-Fief Console. The standard container includes storage circuits, so other devices in the base can reach its contents.
  • Spice Refineries: each refinery has its own small inventory, listed on the community wiki as five slots, so it is a processing station rather than a place to stockpile.
  • Sandcrawler: its Centrifuge module stores what the Vacuum module collects, and both modules must be installed before it can gather. A unique module, the Upgraded Regis Spice Container, adds storage volume and slots. The Sandcrawler collects Spice Sand but not Flour Sand.

Because the storage circuits let devices across the base reach a container's contents, a practical "silo" setup is simply a group of containers placed near your Sub-Fief Console and refineries, all part of the same base.

How Much Space Spice Takes

Spice Sand is bulky because refining needs a lot of it. On the community wiki's recipe tables, a small refinery turns 100 Spice Sand and 750 mL of water into 1 Melange, a medium one turns 750 Sand into 10 Melange, and a large one turns 10,000 Sand into 200 Melange. Spice Melange itself stacks up to 500 per slot, so once refined, even a large hoard fits in a few slots. Field sizes explain why storage fills up fast: a fully harvested large spice field in the Deep Desert yields about 250,000 Spice Sand before harvesting skills.

Keeping Your Spice Safe

  • Sandworms: anything a sandworm swallows, including a vehicle and its cargo, is lost permanently. Spice fields only appear on sand that worms patrol, so move harvested spice to safe ground quickly.
  • Dying: the community wiki lists Spice Melange as dropped on death, so carrying a large stack around is a risk.
  • Sandstorms: unshielded or unsealed base pieces take storm damage, and storage that is destroyed is no longer protecting your items. Keep storage inside a sealed structure within your sub-fief.
  • The Deep Desert: in multiplayer, the weekly Coriolis storm resets the Deep Desert. Use bases there for harvesting and refining, but bring valuables home before the apex.

Why Players Hoard Spice

Melange is the most important trade good in the game. It sells for Solari, appears in close to two hundred crafting recipes, and is needed to build medium and large refineries and Large Windtraps. Raw Spice Sand only becomes valuable once refined, at ratios that improve with larger refineries.

Tips

  1. Place a couple of storage containers right next to your refineries and keep both on the same storage circuit.
  2. Do not store your stockpile in a vehicle; it is the easiest place to lose it.
  3. Refine regularly. Spice Sand takes up storage space, while Melange is far denser in value.
  4. Seal the room that holds your storage so storms cannot erode it.

FAQ

Can I build a Spice Silo in Dune: Awakening?

No. There is no building with that name in the current item lists. Use storage containers linked to your refineries.

Where should I store Spice Melange?

In a storage container inside a sealed, powered base outside the Deep Desert, so it is safe from sandworms, storms and the weekly reset.

Do I lose spice when I die?

Melange you carry can be lost, since the wiki lists it as dropped on death. Keep only what you need in your inventory and store the rest at base.
