Hot Zone in Apex Legends: What Does It Mean?

A Hot Zone in Apex Legends is a named location that the game picks at random at the start of each Battle Royale match and marks as having better-than-usual loot. It appears on the map as a pulsing blue circle, and it is the main place where a Fully Kitted Weapon can spawn on the ground.

How It Works

Most named areas on a Battle Royale map have a loot tier (Basic, Mid or High) that sets the odds of finding higher-rarity items. Once per match, one of those named areas is upgraded to Hot Zone status. The marker is on the map from the very start, so every squad in the dropship can see where it is before anyone jumps.

Inside the circle the loot tables lean toward stronger gear. The community-run Apex Legends Wiki loot tables show that Hot Zones roll weapons, helmets and body armor more often than ordinary zones, and that one Fully Kitted Weapon has an 80% chance to spawn there. In Battle Royale, a Fully Kitted Weapon is a Legendary gun that comes with all of its attachments already fitted; only the optic can be swapped. Respawn picks a set of five eligible weapons each season, and only one can appear in a given Hot Zone.

Respawn has adjusted the feature over the years. The November 2, 2021 patch increased the amount of gold loot in Hot Zones; the developers said the zones could feel lackluster and they wanted them to be more tempting drop spots. During the War Games event in April 2021, a short takeover called Ultra Zones replaced the single Hot Zone with three, each covered by a Flashpoint healing area.

Where You'll See It

• On the map during the drop phase. Open the full map while the ship is flying and look for the blue circle. The ship's flight path tells you how far away it is and how many squads are likely to pass over it.
• In the jumpmaster's call. The squad member who controls the drop decides whether to go for it. A Hot Zone close to the flight path is usually a crowded landing.
• In the first minute of the killfeed. Because every team sees the same marker, several squads often land in the zone at once and the first fights of the match tend to happen there.

Tips

1. Count squads before you commit. Look at how many teams peel off toward the circle. If three or more are diving in, the loot advantage is often cancelled out by the risk of an early knock.
2. Land fast and close to a building. Being first to the floor matters more than finding the perfect spot. The first player with a weapon usually wins the opening exchange.
3. Split, but stay in support range. Land in neighboring buildings so you are not all looting the same room, but close enough to trade shots if one teammate gets jumped.
4. Do not chase the Fully Kitted Weapon blindly. It is not guaranteed and only one can spawn. A common gun picked up in the first five seconds is worth more than a golden one you never reach.
5. Consider the edge drop. Landing just outside the circle, or at a neighboring area, lets you gear up safely and then clean up the weakened survivors of the Hot Zone fight.
6. Rotate early. The ring can close away from the Hot Zone. Good loot does not help if you get caught in a late rotation, so check the first ring and leave once you are equipped.

No. According to the wiki's loot data, one Fully Kitted Weapon has an 80% chance to spawn in the Hot Zone, so some matches will not have one there. Fully Kitted Weapons can also appear from other map-specific sources.
