Apex Legends Ranked, Matchmaking & Match Terms
This page collects the terms that come up before and during an Apex Legends Battle Royale match: who the Champion Squad is, what players mean by hidden MMR, why one named area glows as a Hot Zone, and what the Mobile Respawn Beacon and Ultimate Accelerant do. It also says plainly what no longer exists, because some search results still describe features that Respawn has removed.
State of the game on 2 November 2026: Season 30 started on 4 August 2026 and Season 31, "Cipher", is scheduled for 3 November 2026. Numbers below that depend on a season say so. Ranked Point costs and rewards change almost every split, so this page explains how the systems work rather than listing RP tables.

| Controller Deadzone | Stick range that the game ignores | Yes, three separate settings |
| Hidden MMR | Skill rating used for matching, never shown | In casual modes; Ranked dropped it in Season 20 |
| Hot Zone | One named area per match with better loot | Yes |
| Loading Screen | Now called Transitions | Yes, as a cosmetic |
| MRB Console | Usually the Mobile Respawn Beacon | Yes, as a survival item |
| Ultimate Cooldown | Charge time of a Legend's ultimate | Yes |
Champion Squad
The Champion Squad is the squad that won your lobby's previous match. When the next match starts, the Champion is shown in the introduction scene together with their banners, and a Legend introduced as the Champion plays an intro quip. During the match their banner is also shown around the arena, the same way the Kill Leader is.
Being the champion has two concrete effects listed on the community wiki's Experience page:
- the squad that went into the match as Champion earns 500 XP for that status;
- any player who eliminates a member of the Champion squad earns 500 XP per kill.
A common belief is that the Champion Squad is picked for kills or rank. It is not: only a win makes you the Champion, and you keep the title for one match. Because other squads can see who the Champion is, expect more third-party attention in the first minutes, but the game gives no extra stats or loot for it.
Club Tag
A Club Tag was the short tag shown next to your name when you belonged to a Club. Clubs came with Season 7, held up to 30 members, one club per player, and offered a member list, a timeline, chat and a button to invite everyone online to a party.
Clubs were removed from the game with the Season 20 launch on 13 February 2024, so Club Tags no longer appear and you cannot create or join a club. If you want a shared identity in current Apex, you need a party and a friends list, or an outside community such as Discord. Guides that still tell you to open the Club tab describe the game before 2024.
Controller Deadzone
A deadzone is the part of the stick's travel that the game ignores, so a worn stick that rests slightly off centre does not move your view. Apex has three related settings on the controller tab:
- Look Deadzone: stops the camera from drifting when you do not touch the right stick;
- Movement Deadzone: stops your character from walking by itself when the left stick is idle;
- Trigger Deadzones: how far a trigger must be pressed before it registers, from None to Max.
The in-game tooltip says to raise the stick deadzones only if you actually see drift. A larger deadzone means you have to push the stick further before anything happens, which hurts fine aim adjustments. A practical test: open the Firing Range, leave both sticks alone and watch the camera and your legend for ten seconds. If nothing moves, leave the values low.
Hidden MMR
MMR (matchmaking rating) is a number the matchmaker keeps for you that estimates your skill. In Apex it is never shown. Your visible Ranked tier is a separate thing.
- Casual modes (unranked Battle Royale and the mixtapes) match players on a hidden skill rating. Respawn's technical director has said all modes use the same skill-rating technology, with different tuning values for each mode.
- Ranked, Season 17 to 19: the Arsenal ranked update (Season 17, May 2023) moved Ranked lobbies to a hidden MMR, so your visible tier no longer decided who you met. EA warned of slightly longer queues because the matchmaker valued fair matches more. Players found the system confusing.
- Ranked, Season 20 onwards: the Breakout ranked rework (February 2024) dropped the hidden MMR from Ranked. Lobbies are built from your Ranked Points and tier again, and a party is matched on its highest-ranked member.
- Ranked party rules: all members of a premade Ranked squad must be within three tiers of each other or matchmaking fails, and empty slots are filled with players of similar rank. Leaving a match early, or failing to reconnect within 2 minutes after a disconnect, counts as abandoning and brings a penalty.
- Premade squads in all modes get adjustments for squad size, to account for the advantage of voice-chat coordination.
- Ranked splits ran from Season 4 to 16, were dropped for Seasons 17 to 19 and came back in Season 20. Your tier resets on each split.
Common confusion: when players blame "hidden MMR" for a hard Ranked lobby today, the cause is usually the Ranked Points spread of the lobby, not a secret rating. In unranked playlists the hidden rating is still in use.
Hot Zone
Each Battle Royale match picks one random named area and marks it as the Hot Zone. The wiki's Loot page says loot quality there is increased and one Fully Kitted Weapon can spawn in it. Most other named areas are fixed as Basic, Mid or High loot tier. A Fully Kitted Weapon is a Legendary gun with its attachments already fitted.
- The marker is visible on the map from the dropship, so every squad knows where it is before the jump.
Because every squad sees the same marker, a Hot Zone close to the flight path is usually crowded, and some squads land next to it instead.
Loading Screen
The full-screen art shown while a match loads. The game used to call them Loading Screens; they are now Transitions, an unlockable cosmetic since Season 2. You can set a specific one, Random, or Default, which shows the artwork of the map you are loading into. Many carry lore text. They give no gameplay advantage.
Sources: Battle Pass levels, event challenges, membership rewards (EA Play gave monthly ones in 2022) and community art sets. Some text is not final canon: the wiki notes that a Fuse story told in one Transition was later revealed to be something Fuse made up.
MRB Console
"MRB" is the Mobile Respawn Beacon. The community wiki lists no separate "MRB Console" item, so searches for that phrase almost always mean this survival item. Unlike the map's fixed Respawn Beacon, it is carried in the single Survival slot and deployed where you stand.
| Respawn Beacon | Mobile Respawn Beacon | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Fixed spot on the map | Anywhere, from your inventory |
| Time to use | 5 seconds | 7 seconds |
| Uses | Once, then disabled | Once, then destroyed |
| Noise | Dropship visible and audible | Loud, green beam to the sky |
Respawn added it on 23 June 2020 in the Armed and Dangerous Evolved mode, and to all game modes on 7 July 2020. You need the dead player's banner within the 90-second window. Since the beacon is small, you are more exposed than at a normal one.
Ultimate Cooldown
Every Legend's ultimate charges over time, and the charge time differs by Legend. You can shorten the wait with an Ultimate Accelerant: pressing the ultimate key uses it, and it restores 35% of ultimate energy (25% for Loba, since a 2022 patch). Wattson with Spark of Genius gets a full charge from one. Wattson and Crypto players often keep an inventory slot free for them.
Using an accelerant takes about 7 seconds of channelling, so pop it behind cover. Since an October 2019 patch it gives 35%; before that it gave 20%.
Tip: the ultimate is also reset when you are respawned from a beacon, so a respawned teammate arrives with both abilities ready.

FAQ
Does Apex Legends still have clubs?
No. Clubs were removed on 13 February 2024 with the Season 20 launch. Club Tags no longer appear next to names.
Can I see my hidden MMR?
No, the game never shows it. Casual playlists match on a hidden rating. Ranked used a hidden MMR only in Seasons 17 to 19; since Season 20 (February 2024) Ranked lobbies are built from your visible Ranked Points instead.
Does the Champion Squad get better loot?
No. The title gives a 500 XP bonus for that match and gives enemies 500 XP for each Champion kill, but nothing else.
What is the difference between a Respawn Beacon and a Mobile Respawn Beacon?
The normal beacon is fixed on the map and takes 5 seconds to use. The mobile one is a carried survival item that takes 7 seconds, works once and shows a green beam.
Should I raise my controller deadzone?
Only if the camera or character drifts with the sticks untouched. Higher values make small aim corrections harder.
