EA FC Gameplay, Tactics and Stadium Settings Glossary
This page covers fifteen terms from three parts of EA SPORTS FC: on-pitch skills and PlayStyles, control and tactics settings, and match presentation such as ads, weather, chants and tifos. Some of the names are official feature names, others are words players use for something the game calls differently. Each section says which is which and points to the closest thing in the current game.
The current game is EA SPORTS FC 27, released worldwide on 25 September 2026, with Ultimate Edition early access from 18 September. EA markets its simulation changes as Authentic Gameplay 2.0, and FC 27 offers three Gameplay Types: Competitive, Authentic and Custom. The split dates from FC 26: Competitive is tuned for responsiveness in online modes such as Ultimate Team and Clubs, while Authentic is tuned for realism and match tempo in offline modes, and Manager and Player Career default to it. Changes from the FC 27 Gameplay Deep Dive (29 July 2026) and the October developer notes (28 October 2026) are noted under the matching terms.

PlayStyles and skills
PlayStyles are traits printed on player items. EA's FC 27 explainer (25 September 2026) counts 36 PlayStyle and PlayStyle+ abilities, some of them goalkeeper only. The plus version is the stronger one and is marked with a different icon on the card. EA says certain PlayStyles were refined in FC 27 to rebalance their relationship with player attributes, so a PlayStyle now adds less on top of high stats than it did in FC 26. In Ultimate Team the maximum number of PlayStyle+ on a single item dropped from five to three for FC 27.
Anticipate
Anticipate is a defending PlayStyle. EA describes it as the trait of players with a high tackle success rate and few fouls. The base version improves standing tackle success and lets the player stop the ball at his feet when he wins a standing tackle, so possession is kept instead of the ball bouncing loose. PlayStyle+ significantly improves tackle success.
The word is sometimes used for the general skill of reading the game, but in FC the only thing called Anticipate is this PlayStyle. Reading passes is covered by a different trait:
| PlayStyle | What it helps | FC 27 note |
|---|---|---|
| Anticipate | Standing tackles, keeping the ball after the tackle | Matters more now that tackles are player-led |
| Intercept | Reach on interceptions, keeping the ball afterwards | Players with high Interceptions and no PlayStyle also got more reach |
| Block | Blocking shots and passes | No change listed |
Anticipate is worth more in FC 27 than before because EA removed auto tackles in Competitive gameplay: AI defenders now mainly hold position and only win loose balls or dribblers who run into them. You make the tackles yourself, so a defender who wins them cleanly is valuable.
Early Crosser
Early Crosser is not a PlayStyle name in FC 27. It describes a winger or full-back who crosses from deep, before reaching the byline, to catch the back line before it sets. The official trait closest to that idea is Whipped Pass: the base version makes all crosses more accurate, faster and curvier, and PlayStyle+ adds exceptional power on driven crosses. There is no separate Whipped Cross PlayStyle.
Crossing itself changed in FC 27, which matters more than the label:
- Crosses are delivered into space more often, and aim and power decide where the ball lands.
- Connecting with a header from crosses and corners needs more precision, so clean headers are rarer but more dangerous when they happen.
- At corners, attackers no longer move automatically into the best position to meet the ball.
An early cross into space for a runner arriving at pace is therefore a realistic option in FC 27, while hopeful crosses onto a static target man pay off less often than in FC 26.
Incisive Pass
Incisive Pass is a passing PlayStyle for players known for defence-splitting passes that teammates can run onto. The base version makes Through Passes more accurate, gives Swerve Passes more curve and sends Precision Passes faster. PlayStyle+ makes Through Passes far more accurate, gives Swerve Passes maximum curve and sends Precision Passes at top speed.
Two FC 27 changes shape how it plays:
- Ground and lobbed through passes now strictly follow your directional input and no longer steer toward open lanes.
- Ground and through dinked passes moved to a fully manual system.
The PlayStyle improves accuracy, but it does not bring back the old assistance, so the direction you aim is still the direction the ball goes. Incisive Pass is often confused with Pinged Pass and Tiki Taka. Both of those lost part of their bonuses in FC 27: Pinged Pass no longer reduces trap error for the receiver, and Tiki Taka lost its animation speed boost and its trap error reduction.
Speed Dribbler
Speed Dribbler is not an official PlayStyle or attribute. Players use it for a fast attacker who keeps the ball close at full speed. In FC 27 three official PlayStyles cover that style:
| PlayStyle | Base effect (EA, FC 27) | FC 27 change |
|---|---|---|
| Rapid | Higher sprint speed while dribbling, fewer errors when sprinting or knocking the ball on | Speed boost to dribbling animations slightly reduced |
| Technical | Higher Controlled Sprint speed, more precise wide turns | Gap between PlayStyle and PlayStyle+ reduced |
| Quick Step | Faster acceleration during Explosive Sprint | Boost while dribbling and accelerating reduced |
FC 27 also added an off-balance dribbling system: certain dribblers can keep control after being knocked off balance, based on their Balance, Agility and Dribbling. It is available only on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. The practical result is that pace still matters, but a fast player with low Balance and Dribbling loses the ball more easily under contact than one with all three.
Controls and tactics
Auto Switching
Auto Switching is the setting that decides when the game changes the player you control without you pressing a button. In the settings menu (Gameplay, Switching) the options are Manual, Only on Loose Balls, Only on Air Balls, On Air and Loose Balls, and Automatic. Related settings:
| Setting | Options |
|---|---|
| Auto Switching Move Assistance | None, Low, High |
| Right Stick Switching | Adaptive, Classic, Player Rotation |
| Next Player Switching | Classic, Closest to Ball, Goal Side |
Option names are from the FC 26 menu, which FC 27 kept in the same place. EA's October developer notes (28 October 2026) say Title Update 1.2.0 fixes three cases where auto switching failed to pick the right player: after a teammate's slide tackle, after a headed pass, and after a shot misses the target.
Switching matters more in FC 27 than in earlier years. With auto tackles removed in Competitive gameplay, the AI defender next to the ball will not win it for you, so a slow switch leaves a dribbler free. Only on Air Balls or Manual, combined with right stick switching, keeps the choice of defender with you instead of the game.
Defensive Line Height
Defensive line height is how far up the pitch your back line stands. There are two places to change it:
- Game Type Settings, Positioning: Line Height, Line Length and Line Width sliders for the user team and the CPU team (Line Height runs from 1 to 99). These are mainly for offline and Custom gameplay.
- Custom Tactics: a defensive depth value set per tactic. Community guides treat roughly 45 to 50 as a low block and 65 to 70 as a high line; check the in-game tooltip, since the labels vary.
A high line squeezes the space between your lines and catches attackers offside, but it leaves room behind for through balls and fast runners. A low line protects that space and invites crosses and long shots instead.
EA's October 2026 notes say that after kick-off the defensive line will hold a higher position, which should make it harder for opponents to go straight into the box, and that fullbacks will hold their line more consistently and track runs only when there is a real threat. EA also lists situations where high lines put too much pressure on the opponent as under investigation, so this area may change again in a later title update.
Direct Passing
Direct passing is a style, not a setting. It means playing forward quickly, often vertically, to skip midfield instead of building with short passes. There is no option named Direct Passing; the settings that shape how direct passing feels are:
| Setting | Options |
|---|---|
| Through Pass, Lobbed Through Pass, Ground Pass, Cross and Lob Pass Assistance | Semi, Assisted, Manual |
| Pass Receiver Lock | Late, Animation Start, Power Up |
| Precision Pass Sensitivity | Normal, High |
In FC 27 a direct style relies more on your own aim than before, because through passes strictly follow your stick direction and dinked passes are fully manual. Players with Incisive Pass or Whipped Pass help, and runners with pace and the off-balance dribbling attributes make the most of the space. For the opposite approach see our tiki-taka passing guide.
Set Piece Creator
Set Piece Creator is not a feature in EA SPORTS FC. The name refers to a tool for drawing your own corner and free-kick routines, which players have asked for but which the series has never had. What you can control instead:
- Takers: in Custom Tactics you choose the corner, free-kick and penalty takers. The Practice Arena does not use these choices, which is why a routine you trained can look different there.
- Corners in FC 27: EA redesigned them. After you pick a delivery area the camera moves towards the box for a short window in which you control your attackers (short corners excepted).
- Movement: attackers do not auto-position any more. Hold R1 or RB to make your player avoid his marker, use shielding to hold your spot, and time the run and the first contact yourself.
- Headers: they need more precision than in FC 26, so the delivery point and the timing of the run decide most corner goals.
Our set pieces guide for FC 25 covers free kicks and penalties, which work much like the older system, but the corner section predates the FC 27 redesign.
Presentation and conditions
Billboard Ads
Billboard ads are the digital boards around the pitch, together with scoreboards and broadcast-style overlays that show brands, as on a real match broadcast. In FC they are served dynamically, so the brand on a board can change from one week to the next as campaigns start and end.
EA described these formats when it launched EA Advertising on 15 June 2026: digital ad boards, scoreboards and branded broadcast overlays, with FC 26 named as an example of placements players had already seen. Because the placements are dynamic, they can be swapped without a game update.
In-Game Ads
In-game ads is the wider programme of which billboards are one part. EA Advertising, launched on 15 June 2026, covers EA SPORTS FC, Madden NFL, College Football and other EA games. Besides stadium signage and overlays it includes the EA SPORTS Partner Program: branded in-game challenges, objectives and rewards, such as partner kits and items in Ultimate Team. Brands named in coverage of the launch include Xfinity and Peacock, Red Bull, Visa and Lowe's.
EA's pitch to brands is that FC players play more than one billion matches a month. There is no setting that turns pitch-side ads off; they are part of the stadium presentation in every mode.
Crowd Chants
Crowd chants are the songs and calls from the stands. In FC they come from two places:
- Licensed stadiums and clubs: clubs with authentic presentation have their own chants and goal sounds in the stadium audio. Players regularly report wrong or missing chants for specific clubs on EA's forums.
- Ultimate Team: your FUT Stadium has a Crowd Chant item in the Club section, next to Club Anthem and Goal Sound. You collect these items from the store, the Transfer Market, SBCs, Season Levels, Objectives and rewards, and the one you equip becomes part of your FUT Stadium.
How loud they are is up to you. FC 27's Audio settings have separate sliders for Commentary Volume, Stadium Atmosphere, Crowd Volume, Player Chatter, Menu Music, Sound Effects and EA SPORTS Music. If matches sound flat, check that Stadium Atmosphere and Crowd Volume are not turned down before assuming chants are missing. Old claims that chants influence match momentum or player performance have no basis; they are audio only.
Dynamic Tifo
A tifo is a large choreographed fan display in the stands, such as a giant banner or a card mosaic. "Dynamic Tifo" is not a setting in EA FC; the closest official item is the Animated Tifo in Ultimate Team. FUT Stadium Cosmetics in FC 27 include three tifo types:
| Item | What it is |
|---|---|
| Tifo | A standard display for your home end |
| XL Tifo | A larger display |
| Animated Tifo | A moving display, the closest thing to a "dynamic" tifo |
These come from the same sources as other stadium items (store, Transfer Market, SBCs, Season Levels, Objectives, rewards), and on the Transfer Market they sit in the Stadium tab, filtered by item type. Some stadium templates do not support every customisation slot. Outside Ultimate Team you cannot place your own tifos; displays in Career or Kick Off are part of the stadium presentation.
Griddy
The Griddy is a dance celebration that came to FC through an Ultimate Team event, not the store. In FC 25 it was the exclusive reward of the Griddy to Glory objective group: complete the Daily Play objective five times, by winning three matches or playing six in the Griddy to Glory Cup. The same group paid a 99-rated FUTTIES Icon Ronaldinho and several 99-rated Player Pick packs.
In FC 26 the Griddy was available only to those who had earned it in FC 25, delivered with the pre-season rewards. It was not a base celebration, could not be bought on the Transfer Market and did not come from packs. EA has not announced a way to earn it in FC 27, so if it is missing from your celebration list, there is no current route to unlock it. Celebrations you own appear under Player Celebration in your FUT Stadium Club items.
Pitch Wear Simulation
Pitch wear is the visual effect that makes the grass wear down in busy areas, such as the goalmouth, as a match goes on. It is an option in Career Mode settings. In FC 27, players have reported on EA's forums that wear stays visible even with the option switched off before starting a Career, so expect it to appear regardless until EA lists a fix in a title update.
Pitch wear is cosmetic. EA does not document any effect on ball speed, bounce or player movement, so a worn pitch looks different but plays the same. The surface effect that does change play in FC 27 is weather, covered in the next section.
Stadium Weather Settings
Weather is set before offline matches under Match, Conditions: Clear, Partly Clear, Overcast and Rain, plus conditions specific to some venues, or Custom and Random. Snow needs the Winter season, and not every stadium supports it. Two related toggles live in Game Type Settings:
| Setting | Options |
|---|---|
| Wind Effects | Off, Low, Medium, High |
| Weather Effects | On, Off (Off gives clear weather) |
These choices apply to offline modes such as Kick Off and Career. In online modes, including Ultimate Team, Rivals and Clubs, the weather is set by the game, not by you.
In FC 27 weather affects play more than before, mainly with Authentic gameplay: in wet or snowy matches players can lose their footing when they turn sharply. Quick cuts in the rain are therefore riskier, and a defender turning to chase a runner can slip. Fog is not a selectable condition.

FAQ
Is Anticipate a PlayStyle in EA FC 27?
Yes. It is a defending PlayStyle: better standing tackle success, and the player can stop the ball at his feet after a standing tackle. PlayStyle+ significantly improves tackle success. With auto tackles removed in Competitive gameplay, it matters more in FC 27.
Can I turn off ads in EA FC?
No. Digital boards, scoreboards and overlays are part of the stadium presentation and are served dynamically through EA Advertising, launched on 15 June 2026.
Does weather change gameplay in EA FC 27?
Yes. In wet or snowy matches players can lose their footing on sharp turns, mostly noticeable with Authentic gameplay. You choose the weather only in offline modes; online modes set it for you.
Is there a Set Piece Creator in EA FC?
No. You set takers in Custom Tactics, and FC 27 redesigned corners: after you pick a delivery area you control attackers for a short window, avoid markers with R1 or RB and time the first contact yourself.
Can I still get the Griddy celebration?
Only if you earned it. It was an FC 25 event reward that carried into FC 26, and EA has not announced a way to earn it in FC 27.
