NBA 2K27 MyPLAYER, Badges & Attributes Glossary
Your MyPLAYER is the custom player you create in NBA 2K27 and take through MyCAREER and The City. Almost every question about that player comes back to a small set of words: build, archetype, OVR, attributes, badges, tokens, slots and specialization. NBA 2K27 changed several of them compared with earlier editions, most of all the badge system, which now runs on Badge Tokens instead of buying each badge level with points. This glossary explains what each term means in the current game and how the parts connect.
It is written for players who are making a first build, coming back after a year away, or trying to read a build guide that assumes you already know the vocabulary. The facts reflect NBA 2K27 as of November 2026, during Season 2, two months after the game launched worldwide on 4 September 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC on Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Game modes, REP and Seasons have their own modes, REP and Seasons glossary.

MyPLAYER
MyPLAYER is the player you design yourself, as opposed to the real NBA and WNBA players you control in Play Now or MyTEAM. The same MyPLAYER plays the story of MyCAREER and every online mode of The City, so the time and currency you put into it count in both places. In NBA 2K27 the MyCAREER story is called Fire & Concrete and runs over 11 chapters, from high school through the G League to the NBA.
The biggest change this year is that you can create a female MyPLAYER for the first time in the series. 2K calls the new City its first co-ed City, and all City modes are open to both. Female MyPLAYERs play in The City only. Height, wingspan and ratings come from the build, not from how the player looks, so a female and a male build with the same numbers play the same.
MyPLAYER Builder
The MyPLAYER Builder is the screen where you set a new build's position, height, weight, wingspan and potential ratings before it plays a game. A build is the result: one set of body measurements and rating limits. You can keep several builds on one account and switch between them.
NBA 2K27 replaced the old Pro-Tuned and NBA templates with Signature Blueprints: 40 at launch, each mixing traits of three real players, as a quick starting point. The builder also exists in the NBA 2K HQ companion app. A practical habit: decide which badges you want first, then check in the builder that your height and attribute limits reach them before you spend any VC on that build.
Archetype
An archetype is the name the game gives a build to describe its strongest areas and play style. Names typically combine a play style with a position or a modifier, such as Lockdown Defender, Floor General, Three Point Titan or Stretch Five.
The archetype name is a label, not a rule set. What a build can actually do is decided by its attributes and the badge thresholds they meet. In NBA 2K27 extra archetype names are also handed out as rewards: the sixth goal of each Build Specialization track unlocks a set of them. When someone in the Rec lobby asks "what's your archetype", answering "Lockdown Defender" tells them more than your OVR does, because it hints at what the build will do on the floor.
OVR (overall rating)
OVR is the overall rating of a build, one number that summarizes its attributes. A new MyPLAYER starts with a low OVR and climbs as you upgrade attributes, which you pay for with VC and unlock further through play. OVR is what other players see first, and several systems use it as a gate.
Two OVR thresholds matter in NBA 2K27. Rebirth opens once a build reaches 90 OVR, and its higher tiers ask for builds at 95 OVR. The preview of Cap Breakers in the builder unlocks when a build reaches 99 OVR. Do not confuse it with the Overall Performance rating Casual Corner uses for matchmaking, which grades how you play. Onlyfarms sells an NBA 2K27 OVR Rating Boost priced per OVR point, from 1 to 8 points per order.
Attributes
Attributes are the individual ratings behind OVR. Each one covers a skill: Close Shot, Driving Layup, Driving Dunk and Standing Dunk for finishing; Mid-Range Shot and Three-Point Shot for shooting; Pass Accuracy and Ball Handle for playmaking; Perimeter Defense, Interior Defense, Steal and Block for defense; Offensive and Defensive Rebound for the glass; and physical ratings such as Speed, Strength and Vertical. The builder sets a maximum for each attribute based on your body and choices.
Attributes decide which badge tiers you can equip. 2K's own example: a Gold Limitless Range badge needs a Three-Point Shot of 93. They also unlock specialization tracks; the Shooting track, for example, opens at 60 Mid-Range Shot and 60 Three-Point Shot. Because of these thresholds, build guides list "key attributes" as exact numbers. A typical note reads "3PT 93 for Gold Limitless", meaning the build must reach 93 to equip that badge tier.
Cap Breakers
A Cap Breaker raises one attribute above the maximum your build was created with. 2K describes them as a way to push a build's attribute potential beyond its cap, and you can preview where they would go in the MyPLAYER Builder or the NBA 2K HQ app. Guides report that each attribute can take at most five, and that a Cap Breaker is permanent once applied: it cannot be moved to another attribute or refunded.
Cap Breakers come from progression rather than the store. Known sources in NBA 2K27 include REP and Season rewards, the ninth goal of each Build Specialization track (two Cap Breakers, limited to that discipline's attributes or a physical one) and the Lifetime Challenges ladder at 200 and 400 completed challenges. Because they are scarce, players usually spend them on an attribute just below a badge threshold, for example taking Three-Point Shot from 92 to 93 to reach the Gold tier mentioned above.
Badges
Badges are perks that give your MyPLAYER an edge on specific actions: a higher chance to make contested layups, faster dribble moves, better shot contests and so on. Each badge belongs to one of six categories and comes in several tiers. NBA 2K27 has 53 badges, 19 of them new, up from 40 in NBA 2K26.
Badges are not automatic. To use one, your build must meet the attribute threshold for that tier, have a free slot and have enough Badge Tokens in its discipline. Some badges also have height limits, so a build outside the range can never equip them. 2K's guide says you can swap badges whenever you want and move tokens between them. In practice "my badges are maxed" means the build has every badge it wants at the highest tier its attributes allow. Onlyfarms has an NBA 2K27 Badges service with options for each discipline; this page does not describe how a given order is carried out.
Badge categories
NBA 2K27 sorts badges into six categories, which 2K calls disciplines: Finishing, Shooting, Playmaking, Defense, Rebounding and Physicals. Finishing covers layups, dunks and close shots; Shooting covers jumpers at every range; Playmaking covers dribbling and passing; Defense covers perimeter and interior defense, steals and blocks; Rebounding covers boxing out and the glass; Physicals covers contact, strength and stamina.
NBA2KLab counts 11 Finishing, 9 Shooting, 10 Playmaking, 12 Defense, 5 Rebounding and 6 Physicals badges. The categories matter beyond the badge screen: Badge Tokens are locked to their discipline, each Build Specialization track follows one discipline, and the same six names appear in lot options and build guides. A spot-up shooter spends almost all of its tokens on Shooting.
Badge tiers
Each badge has tiers, shown by color: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Hall of Fame, with Legend above them. A higher tier gives a stronger effect but needs a higher attribute and costs more tokens. NBA2KLab lists typical token costs of 1 to 3 for Bronze, 3 to 5 for Silver, 4 to 6 for Gold and 5 to 7 for Hall of Fame, with the exact cost varying by badge and build.
Legend works differently in NBA 2K27. Guides agree it cannot be bought with tokens this year; it is reached through the max +1 and max +2 boosts of Fuse badges. When a player says "HOF Limitless" in chat, they mean the Hall of Fame tier of the Limitless Range badge, one step below Legend.
Badge Tokens
Badge Tokens are the points you spend to place badges in slots. They are the main new MyPLAYER system of NBA 2K27, and 2K's guide explains the idea plainly: you earn tokens for a discipline by performing in it, for example Shooting tokens by making jumpers. Guides add that Team Practice drills and Gatorade Training Facility workouts also fill the discipline meters. Tokens stay in their discipline, so Shooting tokens cannot pay for a Defense badge.
Bonus tokens come from Season rewards, Crew rewards, REP and Build Specialization; goals seven and eight of each specialization track give four and five tokens. Since tokens can be reassigned, you can drop a Bronze badge to afford a Gold one in the same discipline. If a badge looks unlocked but will not equip, the usual cause is that the discipline has no spare tokens left.
Badge slots and loadouts
Badge slots are the spaces that hold equipped badges. Every build in NBA 2K27 starts with 20 slots spread across the six disciplines, all available from the start; filling them is what costs tokens. Extra slots come from Season rewards, Crew rewards and Build Specialization, where goals seven and eight each add one bonus slot that can be used in any discipline.
A badge loadout is a saved set of equipped badges. You get one by default and can earn up to three more through REP, challenges and Crews, which lets you switch between, say, a scoring setup for Park and a defensive setup for Rec without rebuilding the page each time.
Fuse and Reaction badges (Synergy)
Synergy is the layer on top of normal badges. RealSport101 reports 16 Synergy slots in total, twelve giving +1 and four giving +2. A badge placed in a Fuse slot becomes a Fuse badge: it gets a permanent tier boost above your normal maximum, and NBA2KLab notes that it costs no tokens. This is the route to the Legend tier.
A Reaction badge is paired with a Fuse badge and switches on by itself during a game after the Fuse badge has triggered a set number of times. Guides advise fusing badges that are expensive and trigger often. Synergy slots are earned, not bought: finishing goal 10 of a Build Specialization track grants one, and one of the +2 slots is tied to the REP ladder. A build guide line like "fuse Limitless, react Deadeye" means placing the first in a Fuse slot and pairing the second as its reaction.
Build Specialization
Build Specialization is a quest line that rewards a MyPLAYER for leaning into one discipline. There are six tracks matching the badge categories, each with 10 goals completed through normal games. A track opens once the build reaches its attribute requirement, for example 60 in Driving Layup, Driving Dunk, Close Shot or Standing Dunk for Finishing; Physicals has no requirement.
NBA2KLab lists the goal names. The Finishing track runs Interior Identity (win 25 games), Layup Line (200 layups), Rim Rocket (200 dunks), Inside Advantage, Elevation, Winning at the Rim, Soft Touch, Poster, Certified Closer and Own the Block (2,500 paint makes). The Shooting track starts with Warm up, then Living in the Middy (200 mid-range makes), Range Finder (300 threes), Nothing but Net, Corner Pocket and Sniper School, and ends at Sharpshooter's Legacy. Rewards grow along the track: temporary boosts, cosmetics, archetype names, bonus badge slots and tokens at goals seven and eight, two Cap Breakers at goal nine and a Synergy slot at goal ten. The Onlyfarms NBA 2K27 Specialization Boost lets you pick a track and a goal from these lists.
Rebirth
Rebirth lets you start a new build with a head start instead of from the bottom. It opens once one of your builds reaches 90 OVR. The new build begins at the highest OVR any of your builds has reached, and part of your Badge Tokens are released to it right away, so the core badges are available without earning them again.
There are four Rebirth tiers. According to NBA2KLab, Tier I (one build at 90 OVR or higher) releases 25 percent of tokens, Tier II (one build at 95 or higher) 50 percent, Tier III (two builds at 95 or higher) 75 percent, and Tier IV (three builds at 95 or higher) all of them; the first three tiers also speed up badge progression by 15 percent. Players who make several builds, such as a guard for Park and a center for Rec, plan their order around these tiers.
VC (Virtual Currency)
VC is NBA 2K's Virtual Currency. 2K support describes it as currency you earn across the game's modes and spend on a wide range of content, including MyPLAYER attributes, apparel, animation packages and other virtual goods. MyTEAM has its own currencies, MT and MyTEAM Points, which are not the same thing.
VC can be earned by playing MyCAREER and City games, from Daily Challenges and Season rewards, and in large amounts from the Lifetime Challenges ladder, which pays 500,000 VC at 500 challenges and 5,000,000 VC at 600 according to guide sites. It can also be bought: the Hall of Fame Pass for Season 2, for example, includes 15,000 VC. 2K has not announced any VC transfer from NBA 2K26. When a guide talks about the VC needed "to max a build", it means the cost of upgrading every attribute to its cap.
FAQ
How do you get Badge Tokens in NBA 2K27?
By playing in each discipline: making shots earns Shooting tokens, getting stops earns Defense tokens and so on. Team Practice and Gatorade workouts help fill the meters, and Season, Crew, REP and Build Specialization rewards add bonus tokens.
How do you get Legend badges in NBA 2K27?
Not with tokens. Legend is reached by placing a badge in a Fuse Synergy slot with a max +1 or max +2 boost, so you first need the Synergy slots from Build Specialization and REP.
Why can't I equip a badge I unlocked?
The usual reasons are no spare tokens in that discipline, no free slot, or a height outside the badge's range. Check the token count for the discipline first.
