Cactus Patch in OSRS: What Does It Mean?
A cactus patch is a special members-only Farming patch in Old School RuneScape that can only grow cacti. You plant cactus seeds at level 55 Farming to harvest cactus spines, or potato cactus seeds at level 64 Farming to harvest potato cacti. There are two cactus patches: one in Al Kharid and one in the Farming Guild.
How It Works
A normal cactus takes 560 minutes to grow, a little over nine hours, across seven growth stages. When it is fully grown you check its health for a large one-off Farming experience drop, then pick spines from it.
- Yield. Each harvest gives at least three spines. Like herb patches, every pick has a chance to use up one of the patch's lives, and higher Farming lowers that chance from 75% at level 55 to 30% at level 99. At 99 Farming you can expect around ten spines on average.
- What does not help. Compost, supercompost, ultracompost, magic secateurs and the Farming cape do not change spine yield. Compost still lowers disease risk if you do not pay the gardener.
- Regrowth. The cactus keeps producing after you pick it, with a new spine growing roughly every 20 minutes.
- Experience. Planting gives 66.5 Farming experience and each spine picked gives 25.
- Clearing. Since a June 2026 update, cacti have a right-click Clear option that works even when produce is still on the plant.
Where You'll Find It
- Al Kharid. The gardener Ayesha looks after the patch and protects a growing cactus for 6 cadava berries (noted berries are accepted). She also sells basic farming supplies. An amulet of glory teleport to Al Kharid, a ring of dueling to the Emir's Arena or the gnome glider all get you there quickly.
- Farming Guild. This patch sits in the east wing, which needs level 45 Farming to enter. The gardener Alan protects cactus, allotment and bush patches there. Skills necklace and Farming cape teleports go straight to the guild.
Potato Cactus
Since the Kebos Lowlands update, potato cactus seeds can also go into a cactus patch at level 64 Farming. They grow in 70 minutes (seven 10-minute stages), protection costs 8 snape grass, planting and each pick give 68 experience, and a patch yields at least six potato cacti. Potato cacti are a Herblore secondary for magic potions and battlemage potions, and eight of them pay Taylor to look after a celastrus tree.
What Cactus Spines Are Used For
- Herblore. Spines are the main ingredient of weapon poison+, mixed with red spider's eggs.
- Farming payment. Gardeners accept 10 cactus spines to protect a yew tree, which many players use instead of ultracompost.
- Trading. Spines are tradeable on the Grand Exchange.
Cactus seeds come from Master Farmer pickpocketing and from monster drops including aberrant spectres, dagannoth, ice giants, moss giants and ogres.
Disease and Protection
Like other crops, a growing cactus can become diseased, and a diseased plant left untreated will die. You can cure it with plant cure, which both Ayesha and Alan sell. The simplest option is to pay the gardener before you leave: a protected cactus will not die from disease.
Tips
- Add both cactus patches to your tree or long farming runs. The nine-hour timer fits once- or twice-a-day play.
- Pay the gardener with cadava berries instead of relying on compost, because compost does not raise spine yield.
- Do not clear a healthy cactus too early. It keeps producing spines while it still has lives.
- Use the potato cactus option at 64 Farming when you want short, frequent harvests.
FAQ
What level do you need for the cactus patch?
Level 55 Farming for cactus seeds and 64 for potato cactus seeds. The Farming Guild patch also needs 45 Farming to enter the guild's east wing.
How long does a cactus take to grow?
560 minutes, or about 9 hours and 20 minutes, for a normal cactus. A potato cactus takes about 70 minutes.
Does ultracompost increase cactus spines?
No. Yield depends on your Farming level. See the Old School RuneScape Wiki for the full tables.
