Crown of the Tyrant: What Does It Mean?

Crown of the Tyrant is a unique Magistrate Crown helmet from the original Path of Exile, known for an aura that lowers nearby enemies' resistances and gives you and your allies added damage based on the helmet's socket colour. It is not a unique item in Path of Exile 2: no PoE2 unique with this name appears in current item lists, so PoE2 guides that describe it are mixing up the two games.

What It Does in Path of Exile 1

Crown of the Tyrant requires level 58, 64 Strength and 64 Intelligence. It always has a single socket, and its modifiers are:

  • +50 to +175 to maximum Life (patch 3.11.0 raised this from +50 to +100; older copies can be updated with a Divine Orb)
  • Nearby enemies have -10% to all resistances
  • You and nearby allies gain added Fire Damage per red socket, Cold Damage per green socket, Lightning Damage per blue socket or Chaos Damage per white socket

Because the helmet has one socket, the socket's colour decides which single damage type the aura grants.

How It Works

  • Resistance aura. The -10% to all resistances applies to enemies near you. It does not stack: an enemy can only be affected by one Crown of the Tyrant debuff at a time.
  • Added damage aura. You and allies each get one instance of added damage per damage type. Several players wearing the helmet do not stack the same bonus.
  • White socket. Only a copy with a white socket gives the chaos version. Normal recolouring methods such as Chromatic Orbs and crafting bench recipes only produce red, green or blue sockets, so once a white socket is recoloured it cannot be brought back.

Where It Comes From

The helmet was added in patch 3.4.0 with the Delve league. It cannot be chanced, and it only drops from Aul, the Crystal King, the rarest of the bosses in the Azurite Mine. Aul is found in Crystal King's Throne nodes of the Primeval Ruins biome at depth 130 or deeper, and players usually find him by digging sideways off the main path.

Why PoE2 Players Search for It

Many Path of Exile 2 players come from the first game and remember strong uniques by name. Some guide sites have also published PoE2 pages for Crown of the Tyrant that describe effects the item never had, such as global damage per matching gem. If you meet the name in a PoE2 context, check the in-game unique list or the PoE2 wiki first. If it is not there, the item cannot drop in PoE2.

Tips

  • Pick the socket colour that matches your build's main damage type before you use any Chromatic Orbs. A white socket is the only way to get the chaos version, and it cannot be restored once changed.
  • The resistance reduction is a party-friendly debuff, which makes the helmet popular for group play and aura-support characters.
  • Check that your build can afford the Strength and Intelligence requirement before you buy one.
  • Copies from before patch 3.11.0 can carry the old, lower life roll. A Divine Orb rerolls them into the current +50 to +175 range.
